Taxonomy & naming
Tetragonopterus georgiae was first described by the French ichthyologist Jacques Géry in 1965, under the name Moenkhausia georgiae — placed in Moenkhausia because Géry regarded Tetragonopterus as poorly diagnosed at the time. A molecular phylogenetic study by Silva et al. in 2016 recovered Tetragonopterus as a monophyletic genus distinct from Moenkhausia, and the Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) formally accepts the combination Tetragonopterus georgiae (Géry, 1965) with the original authority in parentheses to reflect the change of genus. The type locality is the Middle Mana River, between the rapids 'Saut-Chien' and 'Saut-Topi-Topi', in French Guiana.
Tetragonopterus is the type genus of the subfamily Tetragonopterinae (Characidae). The genus name means 'four-angled fin' in Greek, alluding to the roughly quadrangular outline of the anal fin shared by members of the group. T. georgiae is one of several recognised species in the genus, which are distributed broadly across lowland South America east of the Andes.
Morphology
T. georgiae is a moderately deep-bodied, strongly laterally compressed characid reaching a maximum recorded standard length of 5 in. The body form is typical of the genus: a relatively high back profile, blunt snout, and the large, rhomboid anal fin that gives the group its name. Like other Tetragonopterus the species is silvery on the flanks with the semi-transparent musculature visible through the skin, and a dark humeral spot and caudal peduncle spot are usually present.
The teeth are robust relative to other small characids, consistent with the species' carnivorous diet. The lateral line is complete. Specific meristic data for T. georgiae are not detailed in the sources consulted, and the species should be distinguished from congeners in the field primarily by distribution and combination of characters rather than any single obvious marking.
Habitat
This species occurs in the river systems of the northeastern Guiana Shield, recorded from the Sipaliwini, Maroni (Marowijne), Mana, Sinamary, Comté, Approuagua, and Oyapock basins — draining through Suriname, French Guiana, and adjacent Brazil and Venezuela. These are largely clear-water, low-conductivity rivers flowing off the ancient crystalline basement of the Shield, typically with soft, slightly acidic to neutral conditions and sandy or rocky substrates.
FishBase records the species as pelagic and notes that it characteristically occupies counter-current zones of rivers, hiding beneath and around rocks in the turbulent flow. This behavioural niche — hovering in broken water near shelter — is shared by other Tetragonopterus and distinguishes the genus ecologically from more open-water tetras. Water temperatures in the lowland Guiana basins where it occurs typically range from roughly 72–82 °F.
Feeding
FishBase classifies T. georgiae as carnivorous with a trophic level of 3.6, indicating a diet that spans both animal prey and some plant material, but skewed toward invertebrates and small prey items. The behavioural note associated with it is specific: the species forages for food items falling into the water, positioning itself in the current near rocks to intercept drifting or dropping prey.
Natural prey items likely include terrestrial and aquatic insects, insect larvae, and small crustaceans. This drift-feeding strategy, combined with use of counter-current zones, suggests a fish adapted to catching items swept past rather than actively hunting in open water. In aquaria it readily accepts carnivore-oriented prepared foods, frozen bloodworm, brine shrimp, and similar small prey.
Mating
Specific field or laboratory data on the mating behaviour of T. georgiae are not available in the literature consulted. Based on the biology of the genus and the broader Characidae, the species is expected to be an open-water egg scatterer — males pursuing females and fertilising eggs as they are released, with no pair bonding and no courtship territory maintained beyond the brief spawning act.
In the related species Tetragonopterus argenteus, spawning occurs in open water or among fine-leaved vegetation, and males display by intensifying their silvery sheen and pressing close to females. It is reasonable to expect a broadly similar pattern in T. georgiae, though this has not been specifically documented.
Breeding
No detailed captive breeding accounts for T. georgiae are known from the sources consulted. As a characid in a genus without documented parental care, it almost certainly spawns adhesive or semi-adhesive eggs that are scattered among plants or substrate, hatch unattended, and receive no care from either parent.
Aquarists wishing to attempt breeding should follow the standard approach for small Guiana-region characids: condition adults on live and frozen foods, provide fine-leaved plants or spawning mops in a separate breeding tank with very soft, slightly acidic water, and remove adults after spawning to prevent egg predation. Fry are typically very small at hatching and require infusoria or commercial liquid fry food before graduating to nauplii.
In the aquarium
T. georgiae is rarely encountered in the trade and is primarily a fish of scientific and specialist interest rather than a mainstream aquarium species. Where kept, it should be maintained as a group of at least six in a well-filtered aquarium with some current — its preference for counter-current zones in the wild means it is more at ease with gentle flow than the still-water set-up favoured for many tetras. Rocky decor and areas of broken current are appropriate; a riverine biotope with smooth substrate and driftwood would suit.
Water chemistry should reflect the soft, warm, low-conductivity conditions of the Guiana Shield rivers: temperatures around 75–81 °F, pH 6.0–7.5, and low hardness. Being a mid-sized carnivore, it should not be housed with very small fish or fry. Peaceful tetras and other characids of comparable size, as well as dwarf cichlids and small loricariids from the same ecoregion, make reasonable companions. Diet should emphasise animal protein — high-quality carnivore pellets, frozen bloodworm, and brine shrimp — supplemented with flake.
Conservation
Tetragonopterus georgiae has not been formally assessed by the IUCN Red List; its status is Not Evaluated (NE). Its distribution spans multiple river systems in Suriname, French Guiana, and adjacent parts of Brazil and Venezuela — a range that, in aggregate, represents a reasonably broad extent of occurrence across the relatively intact forests of the Guiana Shield.
The Guiana Shield remains one of the least deforested regions in South America, and the clear-water rivers that T. georgiae inhabits face fewer immediate threats than those in heavily settled or mined portions of the continent. Gold mining and associated mercury contamination are ongoing pressures in parts of the region, particularly in French Guiana and Suriname, and could affect local populations. Without an IUCN assessment the conservation outlook cannot be formally evaluated, but the species' multi-basin distribution suggests it is not immediately at risk.
