Taxonomy & naming
Tetragonopterus kuluene was formally described by Silva, Melo, Oliveira and Benine in 2016, as part of a major revision of the genus Tetragonopterus Cuvier, 1816, published in Zootaxa (4200(1): 1–46). The paper resurrected several older nominal species from synonymy and erected four species new to science, of which T. kuluene is one. The holotype (MZUSP 120567, 1.5 in SL) was collected in Mato Grosso state, municipality of Paranatinga, from the Rio Xingu basin.
The genus Tetragonopterus belongs to the family Characidae and has a long, complex nomenclatural history — it served as a wastebasket group for decades before the 2016 revision established a defined circumscription. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes recognises Tetragonopterus kuluene Silva, Melo, Oliveira & Benine, 2016 as the valid name. The authority is not parenthetical because the species was described directly in Tetragonopterus, where it remains. No other valid synonyms are on record for this recently described species.
Morphology
Tetragonopterus kuluene reaches a maximum recorded standard length of 2.5 in, making it a small to medium-sized member of its genus. The body is laterally compressed, the typical Tetragonopterus form that gives the genus its name (from the Greek for 'four-angled fin'). FishBase records 9 dorsal soft rays and 26–30 anal soft rays for the species, along with a vertebral count of 30–31. The body cross-section is compressed, and the mouth is terminal.
A single conspicuous humeral spot — a dark mark on the shoulder behind the operculum — is one of the genus's key traits and is present in T. kuluene. The overall colouration, typical for Tetragonopterus, is silvery with some reflective scaling and darker pigmentation forming lateral patterning, though detailed colour descriptions from preserved or live material are limited in the available literature for this recently described species.
Habitat
The type locality of Tetragonopterus kuluene is the Rio Culuene, a major headwater tributary of the Rio Xingu in the state of Mato Grosso, Brazil. The Xingu basin is part of the broader Amazon drainage and is characterised by clear, often swift-moving waters flowing over rocky and sandy substrate through cerrado and transitional forest landscapes in its upper reaches.
Xingu-basin tributaries typically have soft, slightly acidic to near-neutral water — pH broadly in the range of approximately 5.5 to 7.5 and temperatures in the 73–82 °F range — reflecting rainfall-dominated hydrology with limited buffering from surrounding geology. As a pelagic, open-water species (classified as freshwater pelagic on FishBase), T. kuluene likely occupies the mid-water zone in rivers and streams rather than tight benthic microhabitats. Rocky areas and faster flows are characteristic of the Xingu headwaters where characin tetras are particularly diverse.
Feeding
Specific dietary studies on Tetragonopterus kuluene have not been published in accessible literature. Members of Tetragonopterus and the broader Characidae are typically opportunistic omnivores that feed on small aquatic and terrestrial invertebrates — including insects and their larvae, small crustaceans, and items taken from or near the water surface — as well as plant material, algae, and organic detritus.
In the aquarium, closely related characids are readily maintained on a varied diet of quality dried flake or small pellet foods supplemented with frozen or live invertebrates such as Daphnia, bloodworm, and brine shrimp. Variety in the diet is generally beneficial for conditioning and colouration.
Mating
No species-specific observations on the reproductive behaviour of Tetragonopterus kuluene have been recorded in the available literature. Breeding behaviour is inferred from the general ecology of the Characidae, to which the species belongs.
Members of this family are characteristically egg-scatterers with no parental care. Males pursue females through the water column or among fine-leaved vegetation, and spawning typically occurs in shallow, vegetated areas where adhesive eggs are deposited onto plants, roots, or sandy substrate. There is no territory establishment, nest construction, or guarding of eggs or young by either parent.
Breeding
Tetragonopterus kuluene has not been documented in captive breeding accounts in the hobby literature reviewed. General characid reproductive biology applies: spawning involves egg-scattering over vegetation or fine substrate, with the adhesive eggs adhering to plant leaves or roots. No parental care is provided and adults will consume their own eggs if not separated.
In aquarium breeding attempts for similar small characids, conditioning adults on live and frozen foods encourages spawning activity. Eggs typically hatch within 24–72 hours at typical tropical temperatures, with fry becoming free-swimming a few days later. Very small initial foods — infusoria or commercial liquid fry preparations — are normally required before fry can accept newly hatched brine shrimp.
In the aquarium
Tetragonopterus kuluene is essentially unknown in the aquarium hobby. No commercial collections from the Rio Culuene are documented, and the species is not represented in the hobbyist or trade literature beyond brief mentions accompanying the original description. Any aquarium husbandry would be highly specialist, based on extrapolation from other Tetragonopterus and Xingu-basin characins.
If encountered, care would logically follow the template for soft-water Xingu tetras: a well-filtered aquarium with gentle to moderate flow, slightly acidic to neutral, soft water (pH approximately 6.0–7.0, 73–81 °F), subdued to moderate lighting, and a planted or well-decorated tank providing open swimming space. As a schooling species it would benefit from being kept in groups. Diet of quality flake supplemented with live and frozen invertebrates would be appropriate.
Conservation
Tetragonopterus kuluene has not been assessed by the IUCN Red List; its status is listed as Not Evaluated (NE) as of 2025. The species is known only from the Rio Culuene in the upper Xingu basin, Mato Grosso, Brazil. As a recently described species with a type locality in a single river system, its full range and population status are unknown.
The Rio Xingu basin faces significant conservation pressure, including historical and ongoing impacts from hydroelectric development, deforestation for agriculture, and changes to water flow in the cerrado-transitional zone. Until a dedicated assessment is conducted with adequate survey data, the conservation requirements of T. kuluene remain unquantified. Formal evaluation by the IUCN or by Brazilian conservation authorities would be a natural next step given the narrow known range of this species.
