Taxonomy & naming
Tetragonopterus rarus was originally described as Moenkhausia rara by Zarski, Géry, and Isbrücker in 2004, with the holotype collected from the Oelemari (Ulemari) River in the Marowijne district of Suriname. The Oelemari is a tributary of the Marowijne (Maroni) River system in the eastern Guiana Shield. A subsequent revision of the genus Tetragonopterus by Melo and colleagues in 2011 transferred the species to Tetragonopterus as T. rarus — the combination recognised today by the Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, Fricke & van der Laan) as the valid name.
Tetragonopterus is a small genus of Characidae belonging to the subfamily Tetragonopterinae. The genus name translates roughly as 'four-angled fin', an old morphological descriptor used historically across a far wider sweep of characins before modern phylogenetics contracted it to its current, more restricted scope. The species epithet rarus (Latin: rare, uncommon) presumably reflects either its scarcity in collections at the time of description or the distinctiveness of its striped pattern relative to congeners.
The authority for the species is given in parentheses — (Zarski, Géry & Isbrücker, 2004) — because the original combination Moenkhausia rara placed it in a different genus than the one in which it now stands, following standard zoological nomenclature practice.
Morphology
Tetragonopterus rarus reaches a maximum recorded standard length of approximately 3 in, making it a small-to-medium member of its genus. Like other Tetragonopterus it is a laterally compressed, oval-to-rhomboid-bodied characin with the family's characteristic adipose fin and a forked caudal fin. The body depth is moderate and the profile is typical of an active water-column species.
The most diagnostic external feature is the pattern of longitudinal dark stripes along the lateral body surface — a character that differentiates T. rarus from several of its congeners and is the primary external trait highlighted in species accounts. The base body colour is silvery, and the dark stripes run along the scale rows from roughly behind the opercle to the caudal peduncle, giving the fish a cleanly lined appearance. A dark humeral spot and a caudal peduncle spot, standard in many Tetragonopterus, may also be present.
Sexual dimorphism in this species has not been described in detail in the available literature, though as a general rule among characins, ripe females tend to be deeper-bodied than males when viewed from above.
Habitat
The known distribution of Tetragonopterus rarus spans western Suriname and adjacent northern Brazil, centred on the Marowijne (Maroni) River basin and the Oelemari tributary that served as the type locality. The Marowijne system is a characteristic Guiana Shield river: clear to blackwater, running over ancient Precambrian granite and sandstone, with generally soft and acidic to slightly acidic chemistry. The broader Guiana Shield ecoregion covers vast areas of tropical forest drained by rivers that are low in dissolved minerals but rich in tannins and humic acids.
FishBase records the species as benthopelagic in freshwater, suggesting it occupies the lower water column and near-bottom zones in riverine habitats. Like most Guiana Shield characins it likely associates with fallen woody debris, submerged root systems, and the shelter of overhanging riparian vegetation in slower stretches of rivers and forest streams. Specific water-parameter data for the type locality have not been reported in the sources consulted, but comparable Marowijne-system habitats typically show temperatures in the 75–82 °F range and pH values in the mildly acidic to near-neutral range.
Feeding
Tetragonopterus rarus is a characin and, as such, is expected to be carnivorous to omnivorous in its feeding habits — a diet of small invertebrates, insect larvae, microcrustaceans, and opportunistic surface prey is typical of the genus. FishBase characterises the broader Characidae as carnivorous, and the closely related T. chalceus, for which more detailed data exist, is documented as a predator of small fish and invertebrates in Guiana Shield rivers.
No species-specific dietary study for T. rarus appears in the sources available for this article. In the aquarium, related Tetragonopterus species accept a range of prepared and live foods; a diet based on quality sinking or floating pellets supplemented with frozen invertebrate foods (bloodworm, Daphnia, brine shrimp) is appropriate and consistent with the feeding ecology of the genus.
Mating
No courtship observations specific to Tetragonopterus rarus have been published. The reproductive biology of the genus and of Characidae broadly follows a well-established pattern: these are egg-scattering, open spawners without pair bonds or parental investment. Males typically compete for proximity to receptive females, and spawning may be triggered by environmental cues including small temperature increases, rain events mimicking seasonal flood pulses, or changes in photoperiod that signal the breeding season in Guiana Shield waters.
In comparable small-to-medium characins from the same ecoregion, males chase females actively through vegetation or open water, releasing sperm as the female simultaneously expels adhesive or semi-adhesive eggs. Spawning likely takes place in association with fine-leaved aquatic plants, submerged vegetation, or flooded marginal vegetation — habitats that provide both concealment and a substrate to which eggs can adhere. No sexual dimorphism in colour or fin development has been described for the species.
Breeding
Tetragonopterus rarus has not, to this author's knowledge, been the subject of a published captive-breeding account as of the date of writing. By analogy with better-known Tetragonopterus and with Guiana Shield characins generally, breeding in the aquarium would be expected to follow the standard characin model: egg-scattering over fine-leaved plants or a spawning mop, with small adhesive eggs and no parental care. Adults will readily consume their own eggs, making separation of adults from the spawning substrate essential for rearing success.
Care notes for the related T. chalceus suggest that the genus does well in tanks of 105 US gal or more, with regular partial water changes (around 20–30 % monthly) and nitrate held below 50 mg/L. Soft, slightly acidic water matching the Guiana Shield origin would likely be appropriate for conditioning T. rarus, though specific breeding parameters have not been recorded in accessible literature. Spawning groups rather than pairs, and the provision of dense fine-leaved planting, are standard practices for this type of characin.
In the aquarium
Tetragonopterus rarus is not a commonly encountered species in the aquarium hobby, and captive husbandry information is limited. The care requirements of the genus provide the best available guide: related species such as T. chalceus are kept in larger aquaria (references suggest 105 US gal or more for adults) with well-filtered, oxygen-rich water, moderate temperatures, and vegetation for cover and security. A group of six or more individuals is preferable to isolated specimens, as these are social water-column fish that behave more naturally and with less stress when kept with conspecifics.
Water chemistry should lean toward soft and slightly acidic, reflecting the Guiana Shield origin and the soft, tannin-stained waters of the Marowijne basin. A temperature range of approximately 75–82 °F and pH in the mildly acidic range (around 6.0–7.0) is a reasonable starting point in the absence of species-specific data. Monthly partial water changes of 20–30 % and attention to nitrate levels support long-term health. The species' striped patterning displays best under moderate, natural-toned lighting over a dark substrate that brings out the contrast of the lateral stripes against the silver body.
Given its rarity in the trade, T. rarus is essentially a species for specialist collectors with an interest in Guiana Shield characins rather than a mainstream aquarium fish. Its modest size and presumed peaceful temperament with similarly sized tankmates make it suitable for a well-managed community of soft-water South American species.
Conservation
Tetragonopterus rarus is assessed as Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List, with the assessment dated 24 December 2020. The evaluation notes a stable distribution across Suriname and adjacent northern Brazil within the Guiana Shield ecoregion and identifies no current threat severe enough to warrant a higher category of concern. The Guiana Shield is one of the least-disturbed large freshwater regions in South America, and the rivers of the Marowijne basin retain a high degree of ecological integrity relative to more heavily impacted South American river systems.
No specific threats to the species are identified in the IUCN assessment. As with many small, data-sparse Amazonian and Guiana Shield characins, future monitoring will be important if land-use change, mining activity, or hydropower development in the region intensifies — pressures that have affected other Surinamese river systems in recent decades. For now, the species' stable status and relatively wide range within its Shield ecoregion provide reassurance that it is not at immediate risk.
