Taxonomy & naming
Enteromius collarti was described by the Belgian ichthyologist Max Poll in 1945 from specimens collected in the Lower Guinea region of Central Africa. The original combination was Puntius collarti Poll, 1945, and the species subsequently appeared in the literature under Barbus collarti — both genus assignments reflecting the historical usage of those broad catch-all names for small African cyprinids. Following the comprehensive revision of African barb taxonomy in the wake of Pethiyagoda et al. (2012), which dismembered the polyphyletic genus Puntius, the species was assigned to Enteromius, a genus erected to accommodate a large proportion of sub-Saharan African barbs. The Catalog of Fishes records the current valid combination as Enteromius collarti (Poll, 1945), the parenthetical authority indicating that Poll's original genus has since changed.
The species epithet collarti honours Albert Collart (1899–1993), a Belgian entomologist who collected the type material during fieldwork in equatorial Africa. The use of a patronym recognising a non-ichthyologist collector is a common practice in the history of Central African zoological description, where entomological and general-natural-history expeditions often returned ichthyological specimens of scientific value.
Morphology
Enteromius collarti is a miniature barb, with FishBase recording a maximum total length of 1.5 in TL. The body plan is that of a slender, laterally compressed schooling fish. The lateral-line scalation comprises 22–23 scales, a count within the lower end of the range seen across the genus. The species is notably distinguished by the complete absence of barbels — a character that sets it apart from many of its congeners — and by five conspicuous round, dark spots arranged along the flanks, a colour pattern that may serve a social or camouflage function in the dappled light of its stream habitats.
Detailed data on fin-ray counts, body proportions and colouration beyond the spot pattern are sparse in the available literature. As with many small Central African Enteromius, formal redescription using modern museum material has not been published, and the species warrants additional morphological study.

Enteromius collarti is a freshwater, benthopelagic species native to the tropical river basins of Lower Guinea in Central Africa — principally the Chiloango, Kouilou-Niari and Ogowe river systems, with additional records attributed to the lower Congo basin. These basins drain humid equatorial and sub-equatorial lowland forest and transition zones, and their streams typically run warm, soft and variably turbid depending on catchment cover and season.
Documented water-chemistry data specifically for the habitats of E. collarti are sparse in the available literature; temperature, pH and hardness figures for the species have not been formally published. The broader Lower Guinea drainage region encompasses both soft, acidic forest-stream waters and more moderate conditions in larger rivers, and the species' tolerance across that spectrum is unknown. As a small benthopelagic barb it is likely associated with slower-flowing reaches, stream margins and areas of submerged leaf litter or low vegetation.
Feeding
FishBase assigns Enteromius collarti a trophic level of 3.0, consistent with an omnivorous diet positioned at the boundary between herbivory and low-level carnivory. The species is described as omnivorous and insectivorous — a dietary guild typical of small African barbs that exploit whatever small invertebrates, algal material and organic detritus are available in their stream and river-margin habitats.
At 1.5 in total length the gape is small, so prey items are necessarily diminutive: chironomid larvae, small crustaceans, micro-crustaceans and algal films are the likely staples in the wild, supplemented by fine particulate organic matter. Like all barbs, Enteromius collarti is an egg-scattering, non-guarding spawner. Enteromius collarti has not been documented in captive breeding to any degree recorded in the accessible hobby or scientific literature. As an egg-scattering barb it would be expected to scatter adhesive eggs over fine-leaved plants, roots or among substrate debris, with no parental care; adults of barbs in general will consume their own eggs if these remain accessible.
The species' small size — maximum 1.5 in TL — means that fecundity per spawning event is likely modest relative to larger barbs. Practical captive husbandry details such as conditioning diet, water parameters for spawning induction and larval rearing have not been published for this species. Given its rarity in the trade and its Vulnerable conservation status, captive propagation would be of considerable value should the species ever become available to specialist breeders.

Enteromius collarti is essentially unknown in the aquarium hobby. It does not appear in the mainstream trade and is not featured in standard aquarium references. The species' small adult size (1.5 in TL), absence of barbels and distinctive spotted flank pattern would make it an attractive subject for a specialist biotope aquarium representing the Lower Guinea river fauna — a region whose fish are rarely represented in hobbyist collections.
Any husbandry approach would start from general principles applicable to small tropical African barbs: warm, well-filtered water, a cover of fine-leaved plants or floating vegetation to provide refuge, and a diet of small live and frozen invertebrates supplemented with quality prepared foods. Its Vulnerable status means that any specimens entering the hobby should ideally originate from verified captive-bred stock rather than wild collection.
Conservation
Enteromius collarti is assessed as Vulnerable (VU) on the IUCN Red List. The species is a narrow endemic of the Lower Guinea river drainages — the Chiloango, Kouilou-Niari and Ogowe basins — a region that, while retaining substantial forest cover relative to other parts of Central Africa, is subject to increasing pressure from logging, agricultural conversion, artisanal and industrial mining, and associated pollution and sedimentation of watercourses.
The combination of a restricted native range confined to a few adjacent drainages and ongoing degradation of freshwater habitat places the species at genuine risk. Small, sedentary stream-dwelling barbs are disproportionately vulnerable to catchment-level disturbance because they cannot recolonise from distant refugia once a local population is lost. Continued monitoring of the Lower Guinea freshwater fish community and protection of the remaining intact river corridors are the primary conservation priorities for this species.
