Enteromius martorelli is a small freshwater barb endemic to the Lower Guinea ichthyological province of west-central Africa, where it inhabits the rivers and streams of a broad coastal corridor stretching from Cameroon south through Gabon and into the Republic of Congo. Reaching just under 4 in standard length, it is a benthopelagic cyprinid of tropical forest and savanna drainages — the Sanaga, Nyong, Ntem, Ogooué, Kouilou-Niari and their tributaries — and doubles as a locally significant food fish in rural southern Cameroon. Described from a watercourse near Yaoundé, it remains relatively obscure in the aquarium hobby but is assessed as Least Concern on the IUCN Red List, with a wide enough distribution to buffer it from immediate risk.

Taxonomy & naming

Enteromius martorelli was described by Roman in 1971, originally placed in the genus Barbus — the broad catch-all that once accommodated nearly all African and Eurasian barbs. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer et al., CAS), the authority for valid names, now places the species in Enteromius Cope, 1861, a genus erected to house the bulk of sub-Saharan African barbs following the progressive dismemberment of the old Barbus complex. The original combination, Barbus martorelli Roman, 1971, is cited in the older literature and may still appear in regional field guides; the currently valid name is Enteromius martorelli (Roman, 1971), with the authority in parentheses marking the transfer out of the original genus.

The type locality is the Foulou watercourse at Nkolfoulou (3°53'N, 11°34'E) near Yaoundé, in the Sanaga drainage of southern Cameroon. FishBase carries the species under the identifier 11406. No subspecies are recognised, and the species has not been subject to a molecular phylogenetic revision separating it from its congeners within the Lower Guinea barb fauna.

Morphology

Enteromius martorelli is a small, slender-to-moderately deep barb reaching a recorded maximum of 4 in standard length, though most specimens in the type-locality study ranged from 1–4.5 in SL, reflecting the full size span from juveniles to mature adults. The fin formula, as recorded by FishBase, includes one dorsal spine with 10 soft dorsal rays, and 8 soft anal rays — a ray count consistent with the typical Enteromius bodyplan.

Detailed published descriptions of colouration in life are sparse for this species. Like most small African Enteromius it is presumed to be a laterally compressed cyprinid with a relatively plain or lightly marked body, without the bold barring characteristic of Asian tiger barbs or the spotted patterning of some other African barbs. The benthopelagic habits noted in FishBase suggest a fish that occupies both the lower water column and the substrate, which is consistent with a body form suited to manoeuvreing in flowing-water habitats over sand, gravel and root masses.

Habitat

The species is a Lower Guinea endemic, distributed across a series of coastal river systems running from the Sanaga basin in Cameroon southward through the Nyong, Ntem, Woleu/Mbini (in Equatorial Guinea), Ogooué (the great river of Gabon), Nyanga, Loémé and Kouilou-Niari systems into the Republic of Congo. This range spans a broad band of equatorial and sub-equatorial west-central Africa, encompassing both lowland rainforest drainages and savanna-edged rivers.

The type locality — the Foulou watercourse near Yaoundé — is a small tributary-scale stream in the interior of Cameroon, and the wider distribution across multiple large and small basins suggests the species tolerates variation in current speed and substrate type. Water chemistry data specific to this species are not commonly reported in the literature; the Lower Guinea rivers where it occurs range from soft and slightly acidic in forested headwaters to moderately hard and near-neutral in broader, more open reaches. FishBase records a tropical temperature preference of 72–79 °F, consistent with the equatorial belt in which the species lives.

Feeding

No detailed dietary study for Enteromius martorelli has been published in the accessible literature. By analogy with closely related small African Enteromius of similar size and habitat, it is likely an opportunistic omnivore, taking small aquatic invertebrates — insect larvae, worms and micro-crustaceans — along with algae, diatoms and plant detritus picked from the substrate and the lower water column.

Its benthopelagic classification implies regular foraging along the bottom, consistent with the diet of a benthic and water-column generalist. In southern Cameroon the species has been noted as economically important as a small food fish in rural communities near Yaoundé, which suggests it is locally abundant and accessible in shallow reaches of its river systems.

Mating

Enteromius martorelli, as a member of the family Cyprinidae and the genus Enteromius, is an egg-scattering, non-guarding spawner. No nest is built, no territory is held beyond a transient courtship pursuit, and no pair bond persists after spawning. Courtship takes the form typical of barbs: a male in breeding condition drives a gravid female through vegetation, roots or over the substrate, and the two come together briefly to release eggs and milt simultaneously.

The eggs are adhesive and settle among plants, roots or gravel after release. No parental involvement follows — in many barb species the adults are apt to consume their own eggs if they encounter them. Specific field observations on the breeding season of E. martorelli have not been published, but the equatorial climate of its range, with attenuated seasonality and year-round warm temperatures, suggests spawning may not be as sharply seasonal as in temperate-latitude barbs.

Breeding

Enteromius martorelli has not been documented as an aquarium breeding subject in the hobby literature, and no husbandry or captive-breeding records are available in the sources surveyed. By structural analogy with other small African Enteromius of similar size, captive spawning would most likely follow the same pattern as other barb egg-scatterers: a shallow, well-planted spawning tank with soft, slightly acidic to neutral water at tropical temperature, fine-leaved plants or a spawning mop, and separation of adults from the eggs promptly after spawning to prevent predation.

Fecundity, incubation time and larval development data are not reported in the available literature for this species. Its ready availability as a food fish near Yaoundé suggests populations are robust and naturally recruit well, but captive propagation has apparently not been pursued or at least not documented.

In the aquarium

Enteromius martorelli is essentially unknown in the international aquarium trade. It does not appear in mainstream hobby databases, and no care sheets or hobbyist accounts were located during research. Given its moderate size (approaching 4 in SL), it would be suited to a medium-to-large aquarium with robust filtration and a current, reflecting the flowing-river habitats it occupies in the wild.

For any aquarist who encounters this species — perhaps via a specialist importer of west African fish — the general framework for keeping small to mid-sized African barbs applies: a spacious tank, neutral to slightly acidic soft water, a varied diet of live, frozen and prepared foods, and conspecific or similarly robust tankmates. As with all Enteromius, it is an egg-scattering shoaler and should be kept in groups rather than as solitary individuals. Its food-fish status in Cameroon suggests it is a hardy animal in its native rivers.

Conservation

Enteromius martorelli is assessed as Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List, evaluated in 2022. The assessment reflects a wide distribution across multiple Lower Guinea river basins — from the Sanaga in Cameroon to the Kouilou-Niari in the Republic of Congo — which supports a population broad enough that no major range-wide decline is indicated.

Pressures on Lower Guinea freshwater biodiversity are nonetheless real: deforestation, agricultural runoff, artisanal mining and infrastructure development are ongoing in the river basins where this species lives, and the small-stream habitats represented by the type locality near Yaoundé are particularly vulnerable to urban and peri-urban encroachment. The species' economic importance as a small food fish in rural Cameroon also introduces localised harvest pressure. For the present, however, its range extent and apparent abundance across multiple basins keep it in the lowest-risk category.
