Barbodes dorsimaculatus was described by the German ichthyologist Ernst Ahl in 1923 and is recorded under the authority (Ahl, 1923) in the Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS), the governing authority for valid names. The parenthetical authority reflects placement in a genus other than the one Ahl originally used.
The genus Barbodes belongs to the family Cyprinidae and encompasses a cluster of small to medium Asian barbs formerly lumped within the sprawling genus Puntius. The landmark revision by Pethiyagoda et al. (2012) dissolved the old Puntius and redistributed its members across several resurrected or newly erected genera; Barbodes received those species whose morphology aligned with the type species of that older genus name. The epithet dorsimaculatus — from Latin dorsum (back) and maculatus (spotted) — almost certainly references a dorsal spot or mark that characterises the fish, though detailed redescription data are not widely available in the accessible literature.
