Mystacoleucus padangensis, known locally as the bilih, is a small endemic cyprinid reaching about 4.5 in total length that is found in the lake system of West Sumatra, Indonesia. Originally described from Padang by Pieter Bleeker in 1852 under the name Leuciscus padangensis, it is now placed in the genus Mystacoleucus — the "white-whiskered" barbs — and carries the old combination Puntius padangensis as a synonym. The bilih is of considerable ecological and economic importance in the lakes of West Sumatra, supporting artisanal fisheries that have sustained local Minangkabau communities for generations. Its highly restricted native range, combined with habitat degradation, sedimentation, overfishing, and the consequences of an ill-considered introduction into Lake Toba, has led the IUCN to classify it as Vulnerable.

Taxonomy & naming

Mystacoleucus padangensis was described by the Dutch ichthyologist Pieter Bleeker in 1852 from specimens collected near Padang, West Sumatra. Bleeker's original genus assignment has been revised over time, and the species passed through the large catch-all genus Puntius — under which it was widely known in the literature as Puntius padangensis (Bleeker, 1852) — before being referred to Mystacoleucus under current taxonomy. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, the governing authority for valid names) accepts Mystacoleucus padangensis (Bleeker, 1852) as the valid combination, with the parenthetical authority reflecting the transfer from Bleeker's original placement.

The genus Mystacoleucus comprises a small cluster of Sundaland and mainland Southeast Asian barbs characterised by the presence of prominent rostral barbels. The name combines the Greek mystax (whiskered, or the area above the upper lip) with leukos (white), referring to these pale barbels. The specific epithet padangensis is a Latinised toponym meaning "of Padang", the West Sumatran coastal city near the type locality. In the local Minangkabau language of West Sumatra the fish is universally called bilih, and that vernacular name is used throughout the Indonesian scientific and fisheries literature.

Morphology

Mystacoleucus padangensis is a slender, fusiform cyprinid reaching a maximum recorded total length of 4.5 in per FishBase, though most individuals encountered in artisanal catch are considerably smaller. The body is laterally compressed, with a somewhat pointed snout bearing rostral barbels — the diagnostic feature of the genus. The scales are relatively large for a barb of this size, and the coloration in life is silvery with faint lateral shading, consistent with an open-water, planktivorous lifestyle rather than the bold banding or spotting seen in many rheophilic barbs.

Sexual dimorphism follows the general cyprinid pattern: ripe females become noticeably deeper-bodied and more rounded in the abdomen when carrying eggs, while males remain slimmer. Coloration and finnage are not markedly different between the sexes.

Habitat

The bilih is endemic to the lake system of West Sumatra, with its primary known native population centred on Lake Singkarak, a tectonic graben lake in the Barisan Mountains at approximately 1188 ft elevation. Lake Singkarak is a warm, moderately deep lake with clear to slightly turbid water that supports a characteristic phytoplankton community including diatoms of the genus Aulacoseira. Research on phytoplankton community structure in the lake has confirmed the spatial structure of bilih habitat within the littoral and pelagic zones, where the species aggregates in schools.

A population is also documented from Lake Toba in North Sumatra, the world's largest volcanic lake, but the origin of this population is contested — evidence suggests it may have been introduced rather than representing a historically native stock. Published distribution and growth-resilience studies have located bilih at six capture sites around Lake Toba and in associated tributaries, occupying the littoral zone and nearshore pelagic waters.

Feeding

Mystacoleucus padangensis is principally a planktivore and filter-feeder. FishBase records its food items as phytoplankton and diatoms, with the diatom genus Aulacoseira noted specifically — consistent with the phytoplankton assemblage documented in Lake Singkarak. This dietary preference aligns with the species' slender, open-water body form and its habit of aggregating in mid-water schools well-suited to exploiting dense phytoplankton blooms.

In common with many small cyprinids, the bilih likely supplements phytoplankton with zooplankton and fine organic particles depending on seasonal availability. Its economic value in the local artisanal fishery is partly tied to this planktivorous niche, which supports rapid growth and good condition in the productive limnetic zone of Lake Singkarak.

Mating

Like all barbs, Mystacoleucus padangensis is an egg-scattering, non-guarding spawner. No nest is constructed, no territory is defended beyond the brief act of courtship, and no parental care is provided at any stage. Spawning behaviour in small cyprinids of this type follows a pattern in which ripe males pursue and drive gravid females through the water column or over the substrate, eventually pressing together as eggs and milt are broadcast simultaneously.

The adhesive or semi-adhesive eggs sink and settle among bottom substrate, submerged vegetation, or the lake bed. Adults do not guard or tend the eggs, and in dense spawning aggregations both sexes are indifferent to — or actively prey on — released eggs. In lake environments like Singkarak, spawning is likely seasonal and tied to temperature, water level, and food availability cycles.

Breeding

Spawning in Mystacoleucus padangensis, as inferred from its biology and the general reproductive mode of barbs, involves broadcast egg-scattering with no parental investment. Eggs are released into the water column or over the substrate and receive no guarding, cleaning, or protection from either parent. Larvae must fend for themselves from hatching onward.

The species has significant importance in artisanal fisheries at Lake Singkarak, which implies natural recruitment sufficient to sustain harvesting pressure under historical conditions, though overfishing has become a recognised threat. Captive breeding has not been widely reported in the aquarium literature, reflecting the species' limited presence in the ornamental trade and its status as primarily a wild-fishery and conservation subject.

In the aquarium

Mystacoleucus padangensis is not an established aquarium species and is rarely, if ever, available in the ornamental trade. Its appeal lies in its conservation story and its ecological role as a key species in the endemic lake fauna of West Sumatra, rather than in ornamental qualities. The very few records of the fish in aquarist settings come from Indonesian researchers and conservation programmes rather than the hobbyist market.

Were it to be kept, the species' lake-adapted biology would suggest spacious, open-water conditions with warm tropical temperatures, well-oxygenated clear water, and a diet oriented toward fine particles and live or frozen plankton. Its shoaling, planktivorous nature and modest size — under 4.5 in — would in principle suit a large, peaceful community of open-water fishes. In practice, hobbyists are unlikely to encounter it, and its Vulnerable status makes collection from wild populations an ethically poor option.

Conservation

Mystacoleucus padangensis is assessed as Vulnerable (VU) on the IUCN Red List under criterion B1ab(iii,v)+2ab(iii,v), assessed in April 2020. The assessment reflects the species' severely restricted range — centred on Lake Singkarak in West Sumatra — combined with ongoing decline in the quality of its habitat and the size of its mature population. Lake Singkarak has experienced increasing sedimentation, water-quality degradation from agricultural run-off and domestic waste, and sustained overfishing pressure on the bilih fishery that has been economically important to local Minangkabau communities for generations.

The introduction of bilih into Lake Toba, intended to establish a secondary population and expand the fishery, has had complex ecological consequences that are still being studied. While growth and resilience data from Lake Toba populations suggest the fish can survive in that system, the conservation value of this non-native population remains uncertain relative to the original Lake Singkarak stock. Protecting the water quality, catchment hydrology, and fish-community integrity of Lake Singkarak is the primary conservation priority for the species.
