Taxonomy & naming
Enteromius atkinsoni was described by Reeve M. Bailey in 1969. The species was originally placed in the broadly defined genus Barbus or Puntius — the sprawling catch-all that once accommodated nearly all Old World barbs — before subsequent molecular and morphological revisions redistributed African members into Enteromius and allied genera. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) records the valid combination as Enteromius atkinsoni (Bailey, 1969), with the parenthetical authority marking the transfer from the original genus.
Enteromius is a large and internally heterogeneous genus of African barbs whose limits and membership continue to be refined as phylogenetic work progresses. Many species in the genus are known from only a handful of specimens collected at or near the type locality, and E. atkinsoni falls into this category of data-sparse West African forms. The species epithet honours an individual named Atkinson, following the convention of naming new species for collectors or contributors to the material.
Morphology
Enteromius atkinsoni is a small, slender barb; published sources indicate a standard length in the order of 1.5–2 in, typical for the small-stream Enteromius assemblage of West Africa. Like other members of the genus it has the characteristic barb body plan: a moderately compressed, fusiform profile, a single dorsal fin without a hardened spine, a small subterminal or terminal mouth suited to picking invertebrates and organic matter from the substrate, and a complete lateral line.
Detailed meristic data and colour descriptions in accessible literature are limited for this species. In life, small West African Enteromius are typically silvery to straw-coloured with some darker pigmentation along the flanks or at the base of the caudal fin, but the precise pattern of E. atkinsoni has not been documented in widely available sources. Sexes in the genus are usually distinguishable at breeding condition by the fuller abdomen of gravid females.
Habitat
The type locality and primary range of Enteromius atkinsoni lie in the river systems of the Nigeria–Cameroon border region, in the Guinea–Congolian forest and savanna transition zone of West Africa. Small Enteromius in this region typically inhabit shallow streams, forest creeks, and river tributaries with sandy or gravel substrates, often with riparian vegetation overhanging the banks.
Water conditions in West African forest and transitional streams vary considerably: temperature broadly in the range of 72–79 °F, pH neutral to mildly acidic (approximately 6.0–7.5), and hardness soft to moderate, depending on substrate geology. Seasonal fluctuations in flow, turbidity, and chemistry are characteristic of this zone. Published habitat data specific to E. atkinsoni are not available in accessible literature; the parameters above reflect the regional range rather than species-specific measurements.
Feeding
Enteromius atkinsoni is presumed to be an omnivore in the manner of most small Enteromius species — opportunistically taking small invertebrates (insect larvae, microcrustaceans, worms), algae, diatoms, and fine organic detritus from the substrate and water column. This feeding mode is consistent with the body form and mouth position of the species and with the ecology of comparable small-stream barbs in West Africa.
No specific gut-content studies for E. atkinsoni appear in accessible literature. In the aquarium, fish of this type readily accept good-quality flake or micro-pellet foods alongside live and frozen invertebrates such as Artemia nauplii and chironomid larvae.
Mating
Like all barbs, Enteromius atkinsoni is an egg-scattering, non-guarding spawner. There is no nest construction, no pair bond, and no parental investment beyond the act of spawning. When a female is gravid and conditions are suitable, a male pursues her actively through vegetation or over open substrate; eggs and milt are released together in brief lateral presses, and the adhesive eggs settle among plants, roots or into the substrate.
No territory is defended and no paternal or maternal care follows spawning. Multiple males may court and spawn with a single female, and the eggs are at risk of being consumed by the adults immediately after release. Spawning in wild West African stream barbs is often seasonal, linked to the onset of the rainy season when water levels rise and temperature and food availability shift.
Breeding
Enteromius atkinsoni is not established in the aquarium hobby and no captive breeding accounts are documented in accessible sources. Based on the uniform reproductive biology of the genus, spawning would be approached in the manner standard for small African barbs: a conditioning period on varied live and frozen foods, a separate shallow spawning vessel with soft, slightly acidic water, fine-leaved plants or a spawning mop, and prompt removal of adults after spawning to protect the eggs.
Eggs in related species hatch within 24–48 hours at tropical temperatures, with free-swimming larvae appearing a few days later. First foods would be infusoria or commercial micro-foods, followed by Artemia nauplii as the fry grow. Given the species' obscurity in the trade, captive breeding has not been documented.
In the aquarium
Enteromius atkinsoni is not a species currently available in the ornamental fish trade and is unknown in hobbyist circles. Its care requirements, based on the ecology of comparable small West African Enteromius, would involve soft to moderately hard, neutral to slightly acidic water at 72–79 °F, a well-planted or furnished aquarium, and a varied diet of small invertebrates and prepared foods. As a schooling species, it would be expected to behave best in groups of six or more.
Data are too sparse to make specific recommendations. The species is primarily of interest to ichthyologists and researchers working on the West African barb fauna rather than to the general aquarium hobby.
Conservation
Enteromius atkinsoni has not been assessed by the IUCN Red List and carries a status of Not Evaluated (NE). The species is known from the Nigeria–Cameroon region, an area subject to significant environmental pressure from deforestation, agricultural expansion, water extraction, and pollution of river systems — threats that affect a broad suite of small-stream fishes across West Africa.
The restricted apparent range and limited data for E. atkinsoni mean that its population status is essentially unknown. Small, localised West African stream barbs are among the least studied freshwater fishes on the continent; many are at risk from basin-level habitat degradation without ever having been formally assessed. An IUCN evaluation using current distribution data would be valuable for this species.
