Enteromius macrops is a small African barb described by the Belgian-British ichthyologist George Albert Boulenger in 1911 from West Africa. Like most members of the large and taxonomically complex genus Enteromius, it is a slender, shoaling cyprinid of freshwater streams and rivers, identifiable in part by the proportionally large eyes that its specific epithet records. Published data on the species remain sparse, and it has not been evaluated by the IUCN Red List, leaving much of its ecology and distribution formally undocumented.

Taxonomy & naming

Enteromius macrops was described by George Albert Boulenger in 1911, the parenthetical authority in the current name reflecting that the species was originally placed in a different genus — as was common practice for African barbs of that era, many of which Boulenger assigned to Barbus. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, the governing authority for valid names) places the species in Enteromius, the large genus now used for the majority of small to mid-sized sub-Saharan African barbs following the progressive splitting of the old catch-all Barbus.

Enteromius is itself a genus in flux: it encompasses several hundred species across Africa, and molecular work continues to resolve which lineages are genuinely monophyletic. The name macrops means 'large-eyed' (from Greek makros, large, and ops, eye), a diagnostic reference to the relatively prominent eyes that distinguish this species within the genus. Detailed systematic placement within Enteromius remains unresolved pending broader phylogenetic study of the African barb radiation.

Morphology

As the specific epithet indicates, Enteromius macrops is characterised by proportionally large eyes relative to head length — a feature that distinguishes it from several sympatric congeners. In body form it follows the general Enteromius plan: a small, fusiform to slightly laterally compressed fish with a rounded snout, a short dorsal fin, and a forked caudal fin. Precise maximum standard length data are not available in accessible published sources; like many small West African barbs the species is likely in the range of 2–4 in SL, but this should be treated as provisional.

Coloration in museum specimens tends toward a pale silvery or straw-yellow ground, sometimes with a lateral stripe or a series of faint spots, though preserved specimens lose the pigment detail visible in life. Barbel count and exact fin-ray formulae as recorded in the original description are the definitive diagnostic characters, but published detail is difficult to access.

Habitat

Enteromius macrops is a West African freshwater fish, associated with rivers and streams in the region encompassing Boulenger's original collection locality. Small Enteromius of this kind typically occupy clear-to-moderately turbid flowing water over sand, gravel or clay substrates, often in vegetated stream margins, forest-edge reaches and savanna watercourses where dissolved-oxygen levels are sustained by current.

Precise water-chemistry data (temperature, pH, conductivity) for this species are not available in accessible literature. West African rivers in the relevant latitudes typically show water temperatures in the range of 72–82 °F and a broad pH range depending on substrate and surrounding vegetation, from mildly acidic forest streams to harder, more alkaline savanna drainages. These figures are indicative for the region and should not be treated as species-specific measurements.

Feeding

No species-specific dietary studies for Enteromius macrops have been located in accessible literature. Small African Enteromius are broadly omnivorous: they typically graze on periphyton, filamentous algae and aquatic plant matter, while also taking small invertebrates including insect larvae, microcrustaceans and worms from the substrate and water column. This opportunistic, mixed feeding strategy is consistent across the genus and reflects the variable productivity of African stream habitats across wet and dry seasons.

In the aquarium, congeners of similar size accept a wide range of prepared and live foods, and there is no reason to expect Enteromius macrops to differ markedly from this pattern.

Mating

Enteromius macrops, in common with all barbs, is an egg-scattering, non-guarding spawner. No nest is built, no territory is defended beyond the transient pursuit of a female during courtship, and no pair bond persists after spawning. A ready male drives a gravid female through vegetation or over the substrate, the pair pressing together briefly as eggs and milt are released simultaneously.

Spawning in West African stream barbs of this kind is often tied to the seasonal hydrological cycle, with rising water levels and associated temperature and conductivity cues in the wet season stimulating reproductive activity. Adults give no parental care and will consume their own eggs if given the opportunity.

Breeding

No captive-breeding records for Enteromius macrops have been located. By analogy with the genus, breeding would follow the standard barb pattern: adhesive eggs are scattered over fine-leaved plants, roots or a gravelly substrate; the adults take no further interest and are best removed to prevent predation of the spawn. Eggs of small African Enteromius typically hatch within 24–48 hours at tropical temperatures, and larvae become free-swimming a few days later.

The species is not established in the aquarium trade and has not been bred in captivity to the extent of leaving a documented record. Any aquarist working with this species would need to treat it as experimental, following protocols developed for closely related West African barbs.

In the aquarium

Enteromius macrops is not an established aquarium fish and is not commercially available in the hobby. It is known principally from museum collections and ichthyological surveys. Should it ever enter the trade, it would likely suit a species aquarium or a community of similarly sized, peaceful West African fishes: a well-oxygenated tank with moderate current, a sandy or fine-gravel substrate, and some cover from plants or driftwood.

Water parameters appropriate for West African stream barbs — temperatures around 72–79 °F, a broadly neutral pH and moderate hardness — would be a reasonable starting point. As with any wild-caught fish of limited documentation, care requirements would need to be established empirically.

Conservation

Enteromius macrops has not been evaluated by the IUCN Red List and its conservation status is Not Evaluated. The species is poorly documented in accessible literature, which itself reflects the broader data gap affecting many small, non-commercial West African freshwater fishes. Without published range data, population estimates or trend information, a formal assessment cannot be made here.

West African river systems face mounting pressure from agricultural land conversion, artisanal and industrial mining (which causes heavy siltation and chemical pollution of streams), dam construction and unregulated water extraction. Small-bodied barbs with restricted ranges are particularly vulnerable to these cumulative impacts, but without mapped occurrence data it is not possible to characterise the risk to this species specifically.
