Taxonomy & naming
Epiplatys sexfasciatus was described by the American ichthyologist Theodore Nicholas Gill in 1862, with material attributed to the Gabon Estuary region — the type locality has since been refined to the southwest flank of the Du-Chaillu Massif in Ngounié Province, approximately 16 mi east-northeast of N'Dendé, southwestern Gabon. Because Gill placed the species in an earlier genus and the name has since been moved to Epiplatys, the authority is shown in parentheses: (Gill, 1862).
Four subspecies are currently recognised across the species' West African range. The nominate form, E. s. sexfasciatus, occurs in Gabon and Equatorial Guinea. E. s. baroi is associated with Cameroon, E. s. rathkei with western Cameroon, and E. s. togolensis with Togo, Benin, and Nigeria. Hobbyist strain labels such as 'Lagos' and 'Song Ndong' reference specific collection localities for keeping purposes and track potential colour-form variation; collectors and breeders note that sex ratios and colour intensity can differ between population strains.
The genus name Epiplatys derives from the Greek epi (upon) and platys (flat or broad), alluding to the fish's habit of lying at or near the water surface. The specific epithet sexfasciatus is Latin for 'six-banded', describing the six dark transverse bars on the flanks that are the species' most immediate field mark. Catalog of Fishes (Fricke, Eschmeyer & Fong) records the valid name as Epiplatys sexfasciatus (Gill, 1862) within the family Nothobranchiidae.
Morphology
Epiplatys sexfasciatus is an elongate, dorsoventrally flattened killifish with an upturned mouth characteristic of surface-oriented predators. FishBase records a maximum standard length of 4 in, although most individuals in the aquarium reach 2.5–3 in SL, and Seriously Fish notes that adults commonly fall in the 2.5–3 in range. The body profile is strongly attenuated toward the tail, with the dorsal fin set well back — a configuration shared across the Panchax group and well suited to ambush feeding at the film.
The six dark, roughly vertical bars that give the species its name are most pronounced in females and subordinate males; in dominant males these bars may be partially obscured by the intense metallic colouration of the flanks. Males are the more brilliantly coloured sex: the body shows iridescent blue-green to golden hues, the dorsal and caudal fins are marked with red and orange spotting, and the pointed lower jaw often carries vivid orange pigment. Females are plainer, with a more olive or brownish ground colour and the six bars clearly evident. The dimorphism is moderate but consistent and allows straightforward sexing in adult fish.
Habitat
Epiplatys sexfasciatus occupies permanent and near-permanent freshwater habitats in the coastal lowlands and forest zones of West and Central Africa. Its confirmed range spans Ghana, Benin, Nigeria, Cameroon, Equatorial Guinea, and Gabon. Within this region it frequents calm, weedy stretches of rivers, lake margins, freshwater swamps, and minor forest tributary streams — environments that provide dense surface vegetation or overhanging riparian growth that the fish uses for cover and as a hunting ground.
FishBase records the species as benthopelagic, inhabiting primarily freshwater with potamodromous movement, and notes that some populations use quieter zones of larger river systems. Water chemistry across this range is typically soft and mildly acidic. FishBase gives a pH range of 6.0–6.5 and hardness of 5–10 dH, while Seriously Fish documents a broader recorded range of pH 5.0–7.0 and hardness up to 215 ppm, reflecting the diversity of substrates and water sources across the species' wide range. Temperature tolerance spans 68–82 °F, with Seriously Fish and hobbyist sources suggesting that slightly cooler water — 68–73 °F — suits the species well in captivity.
Feeding
Like other members of the Panchax group, E. sexfasciatus is a visual surface predator. The upturned mouth and forward-placed eyes position it well for taking prey at or just below the water film: FishBase lists its wild diet as worms, crustaceans, small insects, and small fish, with feeding activity concentrated near the surface or in the upper water column.
In the aquarium the species is straightforward to feed. It accepts small live and frozen foods with enthusiasm — Daphnia, bloodworm, mosquito larvae, and brine shrimp are all taken readily. Dry foods in the form of small floating pellets or micro-granules may be accepted once the fish is established. Because the mouth is relatively small compared with the body length, food particle size matters; oversize foods are rejected. Multiple small daily feedings suit the surface-patrol hunting style.
Mating
Epiplatys sexfasciatus is a non-annual killifish. It does not bury eggs in substrate or require a dry diapause period; instead, pairs spawn repeatedly throughout the year by depositing adhesive eggs directly onto fine-leaved plant matter, floating plant roots, or spawning mops near the water surface. This continuous, incremental reproductive strategy is well matched to the permanent wetland habitats the species inhabits, where a dry season does not reliably arrive to trigger a mass-spawning event.
Male courtship involves a lateral display toward the female, with the male spreading his fins to show colour and bars. Receptive females follow, and eggs are deposited individually or in small batches at intervals rather than in a single mass spawning. A dominant male will court multiple females in a well-planted or well-furnished aquarium, and in a group of six or more fish, hierarchy among males is relatively stable. Aggression between rival males is expressed as flaring and chasing rather than sustained physical combat, though in cramped conditions weaker males may be persistently harassed.
Breeding
Spawning is a continuous, low-volume process rather than a single event: pairs or trios deposit a small number of adhesive eggs on Riccia, Taxyphyllum moss, fine-leaved floating plants, or acrylic wool mops each day. Hobbyist sources document two principal methods: a 'harvest' approach, in which the spawning medium is removed every few days and incubated separately in a shallow dish or small tank, and a 'leave-alone' method, in which the spawning medium is left in a well-planted, mature species tank and fry are allowed to grow up among the adults in the presence of natural infusoria.
Incubation takes approximately 12–14 days at 75–79 °F, according to Seriously Fish. Newly hatched fry are small but robust; in a mature tank with good algal growth they can often find sufficient food without supplementation, though feeding with infusoria, micro-worm, or commercial fry powder accelerates growth. Survival to a size at which they can take Artemia nauplii is typically high under the leave-alone method, provided the tank is well planted and the adults are well fed — cannibalism is limited. Killi.co.uk notes that breeders rate the species as 'easy' to 'average' in difficulty, and sex ratios among fry can vary between population strains, with some collections producing male-heavy batches.
In the aquarium
The six-banded panchax is one of the more suitable Epiplatys species for hobbyists new to the Panchax group. Its willingness to breed continuously without seasonal cuing, its tolerance of a reasonable range of water conditions, and its peaceful disposition toward tankmates of similar size make it a practical introduction to non-annual African killifish. A species tank of 15–20 US gal housing one male with two or three females is the standard recommendation; a mixed community is workable if tankmates are non-aggressive, too large to be eaten, and not so boisterous as to stress the surface-patrol lifestyle.
A well-planted setup with floating plants or surface cover suits the species well: it feels secure near the surface under cover and will display more boldly. Filtration should be gentle — a sponge filter or low-flow hang-on unit that does not produce strong surface turbulence — and the lid must be tight-fitting, as all surface-dwelling killies are accomplished jumpers. Water temperature in the 72–79 °F range, pH 5.5–7.0, and soft to moderately hard water all suit the fish; extremes are tolerated but not necessary to aim for. The species is listed by FishBase as of commercial importance in the ornamental trade and is available intermittently through specialist killifish societies and online breeders, where population-coded pairs are typically offered rather than mass-produced fish.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assessment of June 2019, conducted by Lalèyè and Moelants, places Epiplatys sexfasciatus in the Least Concern (LC) category. The species' broad range across multiple West and Central African countries, its presence in a diversity of permanent water habitats, and the absence of documented major population declines underpin this assessment. Unlike many single-locality killi endemics — particularly among the annual Nothobranchius and Fundulopanchax species — E. sexfasciatus is not considered immediately threatened.
Nevertheless, the coastal forest habitats it occupies in Gabon, Cameroon, Equatorial Guinea, Nigeria, and Ghana are subject to ongoing pressure from logging, agricultural conversion, and wetland drainage, processes that reduce the permanence of the shallow swamp and forest-stream habitats on which non-annual killies depend. The species does not have the diapause capacity that allows annual killies to persist through habitat desiccation; localised populations in degraded or ephemeral waters therefore face a higher extinction risk than the species-level LC assessment implies. Maintenance of healthy, shaded riparian corridors and permanent freshwater habitats across the Guineo-Congolian forest zone remains the most important long-term conservation measure for this and related West African Epiplatys.
