Enteromius dialonensis is a small West African cyprinid endemic to the highland river systems of the Fouta-Djalon massif in Guinea, where its drainage divides feed the upper reaches of the Gambia, Niger, and Senegal rivers. Described by Jacques Daget in 1962 under the name Barbus dialonensis, it now sits in the sprawling African genus Enteromius following the post-2012 reclassification of the old catch-all Puntius lineage. Growing to around 3 in standard length, it is a benthopelagic fish of tropical freshwater streams and rivers that is considered Vulnerable on the IUCN Red List — a status reflecting the mounting pressures on West African highland watersheds.

Taxonomy & naming

Enteromius dialonensis was described by the French ichthyologist Jacques Daget in 1962 under the original combination Barbus dialonensis. Type specimens are deposited in the collections of the Muséum national d'Histoire naturelle (MNHN) in Paris, collected from the Fouta-Djalon highlands of Guinea. The parenthetical authority in the current name reflects the move out of Daget's original genus.

The species belongs to the subfamily Smiliogastrinae (tribe Smiliogastrini) rather than the historically assumed Barbinae. Following the broad revision of the old polyphyletic genus Puntius (and related catch-alls) completed from around 2012 onward, most African small barbs were rearranged into Enteromius — a large, paraphyletic holding genus whose internal systematics are still being resolved. In older literature the species may appear under the synonyms or comparisons with Barbus cadenati and Barbus guineensis, closely related West African taxa; workers consulting older regional checklists should treat any such mention as potentially referring to this fish or its nearest congeners.

Morphology

Enteromius dialonensis is a small, moderately deep-bodied barb. FishBase records a maximum of 3 in standard length (SL) for males and unsexed individuals, equating to roughly 4 in total length (TL). The body form is typical for a small riverine Enteromius — laterally compressed, with a rounded snout, subterminal mouth, and the paired barbels characteristic of the genus.

Detailed coloration data for this species are sparse in the available literature. As a riverine Enteromius of West African highland streams it is likely silvery to olive-gold on the flanks with darker dorsal pigmentation and pale underparts — the ground-plan typical of the group — but precise live coloration accounts from field observation have not been captured in the sources examined for this article.

Habitat

The species is native to the eastern drainages of the Fouta-Djalon highlands of Guinea in West Africa. Its range encompasses the upper Gambia River, the upper Niger River, and the upper Senegal River (including the upper Bafing, a major tributary of the Senegal system). These headwater systems originate in the Fouta-Djalon massif — a high plateau of Precambrian sandstone that acts as the watershed tower of West Africa, feeding several of the continent's major rivers.

FishBase classifies it as a freshwater, benthopelagic, tropical species. Highland headwater streams in this region are typically well-oxygenated, running over rocky or sandy substrates; water temperatures at elevation are warmer than temperate but cooler than lowland tropical rivers. Chemistry varies across the drainages but tends toward soft, mildly acidic to neutral conditions in the forested and savanna headwaters.

Feeding

No specific dietary study of Enteromius dialonensis appears in the sources available for this article. Like most small African Enteromius, it is presumed to be an omnivore, gleaning algae, organic detritus, small invertebrates, and plant fragments from the substrate and water column — the generalist feeding strategy characteristic of benthopelagic barbs in tropical African rivers.

In an aquarium context, small Enteromius of this ecological type typically accept a wide range of prepared and live foods without difficulty, but as a species with little aquarium history and a Vulnerable conservation status, wild collection for the hobby is not advisable.

Mating

Like all barbs, Enteromius dialonensis is expected to be an egg-scattering, non-guarding spawner. No pair bond is formed, and no nest or territory is maintained beyond brief courtship. A driving male pursues a gravid female through vegetation or over the substrate; the two press together momentarily as eggs and milt are released together.

Spawning in highland West African river barbs is likely seasonal, cued by rainfall, temperature shifts, and river level — the annual wet season typically triggers gonadal development and upstream or into-flooded-vegetation movements. No courtship or spawning observations specific to this species are documented in the sources examined.

Breeding

Enteromius dialonensis has not been bred in captivity under documented conditions in the sources available for this article. As an egg-scattering barb it produces adhesive eggs scattered over plants, fine substrate, or among roots and gravel, with no parental care — adults do not guard eggs or fry and will consume them given the opportunity.

In the wild, reproduction is almost certainly tied to the seasonal hydrology of the Fouta-Djalon river systems, with peak spawning activity coinciding with rising water levels during the West African rainy season. Given its Vulnerable status, captive-breeding programs could be of conservation value, but no such program is currently documented.

In the aquarium

Enteromius dialonensis is essentially absent from the aquarium hobby. The species has no established common name and does not appear in mainstream ornamental fish trade catalogues. Its Vulnerable status on the IUCN Red List makes collection from wild populations inadvisable, and no captive-bred supply exists.

From a practical standpoint, its modest maximum size of around 4 in TL, presumed omnivory, and headwater-stream origin suggest it would be manageable under conditions suited to small African cyprinids — well-oxygenated, clean water at tropical temperatures with a broadly neutral to slightly acidic pH — but these remain inferences. The species is best treated as a conservation subject rather than an aquarium candidate.

Conservation

Enteromius dialonensis is assessed as Vulnerable (VU) on the IUCN Red List. This status reflects threats to the Fouta-Djalon highland watershed systems on which the species depends. The Fouta-Djalon is sometimes called the "water tower of West Africa" — a recognition of how much of the region's freshwater originates there — but these headwaters are under sustained pressure from agricultural expansion, forest clearance, erosion, artisanal mining, and increasing water extraction across Guinea.

As a narrow-range endemic confined to the upper reaches of three river systems — Gambia, Niger, and Senegal — the species has limited capacity to buffer against habitat loss or water-quality degradation. Any significant alteration to the headwater hydrology of the Fouta-Djalon risks impacting or fragmenting its entire known range. No specific conservation management actions targeting this species are documented in the available sources.
