Enteromius eburneensis, known in the hobby as the Orangefin barb, is a small fusiform cyprinid described by Max Poll in 1941 from the Mount Nimba region of West Africa. Restricted to headwater tributaries of the upper Cavally, Nipoué, Niger and St. Paul river systems straddling the Guinea–Ivory Coast border, it is a benthopelagic stream fish that barely exceeds seven centimetres and displays a distinctive pattern of lateral spots and contrasting fin colouration. Decades of habitat loss and water-quality decline across the Nimba massif have left the species assessed as Vulnerable on the IUCN Red List, making it one of the less secure members of the large African Enteromius assemblage.

Taxonomy & naming

Enteromius eburneensis was described by the Belgian ichthyologist Max Poll in 1941 and originally placed in the old catch-all genus Barbus as Barbus eburneensis. The species epithet eburneensis derives from Eburnia, the historic Latin name for Ivory Coast (Côte d'Ivoire), reflecting the country where Poll's type material was collected. A synonym, Barbus flomoi, was subsequently erected but is now considered junior to Poll's original name.

The genus Enteromius was resurrected and expanded from the mid-twentieth century onward to accommodate a broad radiation of small to medium-sized African barbs that are morphologically and genetically distinct from the true Eurasian Barbus. Under the current usage followed by the Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS), the valid combination is Enteromius eburneensis (Poll, 1941), with the parenthetical authority reflecting the transfer out of Poll's original Barbus placement. GBIF records the species under taxon key 9535263, confirming the same taxonomy.

Morphology

Enteromius eburneensis is a small, streamlined barb reaching a standard length of about 3 in (roughly 3.5 in total length per FishBase). The body is fusiform and moderately compressed, bearing the characteristic arrangement of three dark spots along the flank — a pattern that helps separate it from sympatric Enteromius in the same drainages. The dorsal surface is crossed by longitudinal striping, and the fins display the orange or reddish colouration that gives rise to the common name Orangefin barb.

The species possesses two pairs of barbels of unequal length, a feature typical of the genus, along with eleven dorsal soft rays and eight anal soft rays. Sexual dimorphism is not well documented in published literature, but as with most barbs, gravid females are expected to be noticeably rounder in the abdomen than males.

Habitat

The Orangefin barb is restricted to the upper drainages of the Cavally, Nipoué, Niger and St. Paul river systems in the Mount Nimba highland zone, a biodiverse massif spanning southeastern Guinea and northwestern Ivory Coast. The Nimba streams are typically clear, fast-moving headwaters rising in forest-covered highlands before descending into the surrounding savanna lowlands.

FishBase records a temperature range of 72–77 °F and a pH of 5.5 or above with a hardness of around 3–8 dH, consistent with the relatively soft, slightly acidic waters draining the granitic and metamorphic rocks of the massif. The species is benthic to benthopelagic in habit and is assigned a trophic level of 3.0, indicating a minor-predator feeding guild typical of small invertebrate-picking stream barbs.

Feeding

With a trophic level of 3.0, Enteromius eburneensis occupies a minor-predator position in its stream communities, consistent with a diet centred on small invertebrates — insect larvae, microcrustaceans, worms and similar benthic prey gleaned from the substrate and the water column. Like most small Enteromius, it likely supplements invertebrate prey with algal films, organic detritus and plant material opportunistically.

In the aquarium the species would be expected to accept a wide range of standard foods including high-quality flakes, small pellets, and live or frozen invertebrates such as bloodworm and daphnia. Regular provision of live and frozen foods keeps fish in breeding condition and maintains vigour.

Mating

Enteromius eburneensis is an egg-scattering, non-guarding spawner, consistent with barb reproductive biology across the family. Spawning is cued by seasonal conditions — likely rising water temperature and water level associated with the West African rains — during which a driving male pursues a gravid female through vegetation or over the substrate, releasing eggs and milt simultaneously in brief embraces.

No pair bond or territory is maintained beyond the immediate act of spawning, and no parental recognition of eggs or fry occurs. Specific courtship details for this species are not documented in the available literature, but the pattern is well established across the Enteromius radiation generally.

Breeding

Breeding details for Enteromius eburneensis in the aquarium are sparse in the published literature, reflecting the species' rarity in the hobby. By analogy with closely related small West African Enteromius, spawning would occur over fine-leaved vegetation or soft substrate, with adhesive eggs scattering among plant stems or settling to the bottom. Adults provide no parental care and should be removed after spawning if fry survival is desired.

Eggs are expected to hatch within one to two days at temperatures around 75 °F, with larvae becoming free-swimming a few days later. A separate, well-planted spawning tank with soft, slightly acidic water — matching the species' headwater habitat parameters — would give the best results. Published breeding records in captivity remain lacking.

In the aquarium

Enteromius eburneensis is not a regular presence in the ornamental fish trade and is unlikely to be encountered outside specialist importers dealing in West African rarities. Its small size, active temperament and tolerance of soft, slightly acidic water make it a potentially rewarding species for a biotope aquarium representing the forest-edge streams of the Nimba highlands, kept alongside other small West African stream fishes.

A well-filtered tank with moderate flow, scattered smooth substrate, and some fine-leaved vegetation or moss would suit the species' benthic habits. The temperature range of 72–77 °F is manageable without a heater in warm climates. As with most small barbs, a group of at least six individuals is advisable to support natural schooling behaviour and reduce inter-individual stress.

Conservation

Enteromius eburneensis is assessed as Vulnerable (VU) on the IUCN Red List in an evaluation conducted in 2020 by Entsua-Mensah and Olaosebikan. The species' restricted range within the Mount Nimba region — an area of recognised global biodiversity importance but under sustained pressure — is the primary driver of its threatened status. Deforestation, agricultural encroachment, artisanal mining and associated sedimentation and water-quality degradation in the Nimba catchment all reduce the extent and quality of suitable headwater habitat.

Mount Nimba was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1981 and a Strict Nature Reserve by Guinea and Ivory Coast, providing partial legal protection to the highlands where the species occurs. However, enforcement and the management of buffer-zone land use remain challenges. The ornamental trade is not believed to constitute a significant pressure on wild populations. The species' narrow endemic range means that further catchment degradation could cause rapid population decline.
