Taxonomy & naming
Enteromius kissiensis was described by the French ichthyologist Jacques Daget in 1954. The species was originally placed in the genus Barbus in the broad sense, and later carried for decades under Barbus (and in some literature under Puntius) as part of the sprawling assemblage of African and Asian small barbs then lumped together. It was reclassified into Enteromius following the taxonomic revision of African small barbs around 2007, which elevated Enteromius to accommodate the African lineage of what had been a paraphyletic Barbus.
The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) is the authority for valid names, and the current valid combination is Enteromius kissiensis (Daget, 1954), with the parenthetical authority reflecting the original placement in a different genus. The species epithet kissiensis refers to Kissidougou (also spelled Kissidougon), the town near the type locality in the Faranah Prefecture of Guinea. A comprehensive taxonomic review of African small barbs by Tweddle et al. confirms the genus-level reclassification and notes that many Enteromius species, including E. kissiensis, are known only from their type specimens, making both their systematic placement and current status difficult to evaluate with confidence.
Morphology
Enteromius kissiensis belongs to the genus Enteromius, a group of small African cyprinids characterised by 7–8 dorsal-fin rays, small to moderate scales, and a generally slender, fusiform body typical of stream-dwelling barbs. The species is small — as is typical for Enteromius barbs inhabiting headwater streams — though precise maximum size data are limited by the rarity of collected specimens.
Beyond the diagnostic characters noted at the time of description, detailed morphological data for this species are sparse in the accessible literature, a direct consequence of the fact that it is known from very few specimens. The general build is consistent with a rheophilic or semi-rheophilic small barb adapted to the fast-flowing, well-oxygenated highland tributaries it inhabits.
Habitat
The type locality of Enteromius kissiensis is a tributary of the upper Niger River system in the highlands of Guinea, in the vicinity of Kissidougou at the headwaters of the Milo River drainage. These are upland forest and savanna streams characterised by clear, fast-flowing water over rocky or sandy substrates, at elevations where water temperatures are moderated by altitude relative to the lowland Niger basin.
Water chemistry in Guinea's highland streams is generally soft and close to neutral, reflecting the granitic geology of the Fouta Djallon highlands, which are the source of much of the upper Niger catchment. The specific microhabitat preferences of E. kissiensis within this landscape are undocumented, but congeners in similar West African highland settings tend to occupy the shallower, faster riffles and the stream margins among vegetation and root masses.
Feeding
No specific dietary studies are available for Enteromius kissiensis. Based on the biology of closely related Enteromius species and small African barbs generally, it is expected to be an opportunistic omnivore — feeding on small invertebrates such as aquatic insect larvae, microcrustaceans and worms, along with algae, biofilm, plant fragments and fine organic detritus picked from the substrate and water column.
Small barbs in West African highland streams typically forage actively throughout the day, exploiting the invertebrate drift and the periphyton on submerged stones. Their flexible, omnivorous feeding ecology suits the seasonal variability of tropical headwater systems, where food availability fluctuates with rainfall and water level.
Mating
Like all barbs, Enteromius kissiensis is presumed to be an egg-scattering, non-guarding spawner. No direct observations of courtship or spawning behaviour have been reported for this species. In the absence of species-specific data, its reproductive behaviour is inferred from closely related Enteromius species and the broader biology of the group.
Typically in small stream-dwelling barbs, spawning is seasonal and triggered by rising water levels or changes in water temperature associated with the onset of rains. A driving male pursues a gravid female through vegetation or over the substrate, and eggs and milt are released together in brief bursts. No pair bond is formed, and no territory is defended beyond the momentary act of spawning.
Breeding
Enteromius kissiensis has not been bred in captivity in any documented account. As an egg-scattering cyprinid, it would be expected to scatter small, adhesive eggs among fine-leaved plants, root masses or over gravel, with no parental care thereafter. Adults of the genus will eat their own eggs if given the opportunity, which is the general rule among barbs.
For West African Enteromius species broadly, spawning is believed to coincide with the rainy season, when rising water levels, cooler temperatures and the flush of new food resources trigger reproductive activity. The fry of small barbs are initially planktonic, feeding on infusoria-sized organisms before transitioning to larger prey as they grow.
In the aquarium
Enteromius kissiensis is not kept in the aquarium hobby and is not available through the trade. It is a scientific rarity known almost exclusively from type material collected in Guinea, and no captive population is known to exist. Any husbandry notes would be purely speculative.
For aquarists interested in West African stream barbs, related and better-known Enteromius species from the Niger and Volta systems are occasionally encountered in specialist collections, and the general requirements of small African highland barbs — cool-to-warm, well-oxygenated, soft to moderately hard water with ample current and a varied diet — would represent a reasonable baseline should this or similarly obscure congeners ever become available.
Conservation
Enteromius kissiensis is assessed as Vulnerable (VU) on the IUCN Red List (assessment ID 100160496). The principal basis for this status is the species' extremely restricted known range — it has been recorded only from the type locality in the upper Niger highlands of Guinea — and the paucity of records since its original description, which makes it impossible to determine whether the apparent rarity reflects a genuinely small population or simply the limited survey effort in remote West African headwaters.
The highland streams of the Fouta Djallon in Guinea face pressures from deforestation, agricultural expansion, artisanal mining, and increasing water extraction, all of which degrade the clear, fast-flowing headwater habitats that narrowly endemic species like E. kissiensis depend on. Guinea's upper Niger tributaries are poorly surveyed ichthyologically, and the true status of the species cannot be determined without targeted field surveys. Its Vulnerable listing reflects the precautionary logic that a fish known from a single locality and rarely seen since must be treated as at risk until evidence demonstrates otherwise.
