Taxonomy & naming
Enteromius sexradiatus was described by the Belgian ichthyologist George Albert Boulenger in 1911, originally under the genus Barbus — the large, historically inclusive genus into which virtually all African and Eurasian minnow-like fishes with barbels were once placed. The species epithet sexradiatus refers to fin-ray count: from Latin sex (six) and radiatus (rayed), meaning "six-rayed", a reference to a meristic character noted in the original description.
The genus Enteromius was erected by Edward Drinker Cope in 1861 and has been progressively resurrected and expanded to accommodate a substantial portion of the small African barbs formerly lumped in Barbus. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) recognises Enteromius sexradiatus (Boulenger, 1911) as the valid combination; the parenthetical authority indicates the species was moved out of Boulenger's original genus. Detailed phylogenetic work on this group is ongoing, and species-level assignments within Enteromius continue to be refined.
Published information on E. sexradiatus is sparse. The species has not been the focus of dedicated morphological or molecular studies in the literature accessible to date, and much of what is known about it rests on the original 1911 description and subsequent faunal surveys of West African freshwaters.
Morphology
Enteromius sexradiatus is a small barb with the slender, fusiform body typical of riverine Enteromius species. The specific epithet records a distinguishing meristic feature — a particular fin-ray count — that Boulenger used to separate it from congeners at the time of description. Beyond this, detailed morphometric and meristic data for the species are not widely published in accessible sources.
As with many small West African Enteromius, the body colouration is likely modest — a silvery to yellowish-olive ground colour, possibly with faint lateral markings or a mid-lateral stripe, but precise colour descriptions from fresh specimens are not available in the literature reviewed. Data on maximum size are sparse; most small West African stream barbs of this type reach 2–3 in total length, but a confirmed maximum for this species is not documented here.
Habitat
Enteromius sexradiatus is a West African species, known from the rivers and streams of the lowland tropics in that region. Small Enteromius barbs of this type typically inhabit shallow, flowing freshwaters — rocky or sandy-bottomed streams, seasonally flooded tributaries, and the margins of larger rivers — often in areas of moderate to fast current and mixed substrate.
Water chemistry in West African lowland streams varies by geology and seasonality; many such habitats are soft and slightly acidic in forested catchments, trending toward neutral or slightly harder conditions in savanna and open-country streams. Specific water-parameter records for this species are not available in the literature reviewed. It is presumed to be a tropical species occupying warm waters consistent with its range, broadly in the 72–82 °F band typical of lowland West African rivers.
Feeding
No published dietary study specific to Enteromius sexradiatus is available. Small stream-dwelling Enteromius barbs are generally opportunistic omnivores, feeding on a mix of small aquatic invertebrates — insect larvae, microcrustaceans and worms — together with algae, diatoms and organic detritus grazed from the substrate and picked from the water column.
This feeding strategy is consistent with the benthopelagic, schooling lifestyle typical of small barbs in tropical African streams. In the absence of species-specific data, the diet of E. sexradiatus is assumed to reflect this general pattern for small Enteromius.
Mating
Enteromius sexradiatus, like all barbs, is an egg-scattering, non-guarding spawner. No courtship or spawning observations specific to this species have been published. In the typical barb pattern, a gravid female is pursued by one or more males through vegetation or over the substrate; eggs and milt are released together in brief, pressing contact, and the adhesive eggs fall among plants, roots or onto the bottom.
No pair bond is formed, no territory is held beyond the moment of spawning, and there is no nest of any kind. Adults show no interest in the eggs after spawning and will eat them if given the opportunity.
Breeding
No captive-breeding records for Enteromius sexradiatus are available in the literature reviewed, and the species is not known in the aquarium trade. Based on the uniform pattern across Enteromius and related African barbs, breeding would be expected to follow the standard egg-scattering model: adhesive eggs scattered over fine-leaved plants, roots or gravel, with no parental care and incubation of roughly 24–48 hours at tropical temperatures.
Until species-specific records exist, breeding details remain extrapolated from congeners rather than directly documented.
In the aquarium
Enteromius sexradiatus is not an established aquarium fish and is not commercially available in the hobby. It has not appeared in trade literature or in standard hobbyist references reviewed. Any aquarium husbandry would necessarily follow general care principles for small West African stream barbs: a well-oxygenated, filtered tank with some current, neutral to slightly soft and acidic water, live or frozen invertebrate foods alongside quality dried food, and the company of conspecifics — most small barbs are shoaling species that display poorly and become stressed in isolation.
Given the species' obscurity and limited distribution data, it is not a candidate for deliberate collection or commercial breeding at this time.
Conservation
Enteromius sexradiatus has not been formally assessed by the IUCN Red List and carries no current conservation status. This is the norm for a large proportion of small, narrowly distributed African stream barbs: the number of named species far exceeds the capacity of assessment programmes, and many West African freshwater fishes remain Data Deficient or Not Evaluated.
West African freshwater habitats face ongoing pressures from deforestation, agriculture, artisanal mining, water extraction and the damming of river systems. For a species with a limited documented range and no formal population estimates, these broad regional threats represent a real, if unquantified, risk. A formal assessment drawing on georeferenced collection records would be a necessary first step toward understanding this species' vulnerability.
