Taxonomy & naming
Enteromius trispilos was described by the Dutch ichthyologist Pieter Bleeker in 1863 under the original combination Barbus trispilos, and it has also appeared in the aquarium and zoological literature as Barbus trispilos. The species epithet trispilos is from Greek and means "three-spotted", directly referencing the three prominent dark spots on the lateral field that are the species' most distinctive feature. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) recognises the current valid combination as Enteromius trispilos (Bleeker, 1863), the parenthetical authority indicating that the species has been transferred from the genus in which it was originally placed.
Enteromius is a large and taxonomically complex genus used for many of the small to medium-sized barbs of Africa south of the Sahara. For much of the twentieth century the majority of African barbs were lumped into the broad catch-all genus Barbus or Puntius; the current arrangement places the West African spotted barbs in Enteromius pending a more comprehensive revision of the African cyprinid fauna.
Morphology
Enteromius trispilos is a moderately deep-bodied, laterally compressed barb with the typical cyprinid profile of the genus. It reaches a maximum of about 4 in in total length, with most individuals in collections measuring between 9 and 4.5 in. The most conspicuous feature is the series of three large, well-defined round to oval dark spots disposed evenly along the midlateral line: the first spot lies before the origin of the dorsal fin, the second falls just behind the last ray of the dorsal fin, and the third sits at the base of the caudal peduncle. The flanks are otherwise silvery to lightly yellowish, and the fins are largely hyaline.
The species is benthopelagic in habit, spending time both in open water and close to the substrate. Sexes can be distinguished in breeding condition, with ripe females notably deeper-bodied than males.
Habitat
Enteromius trispilos is native to the freshwater coastal rivers and streams of West Africa. Its documented range runs from the Guinean basins west of the Volta River through the river systems of Côte d'Ivoire, including coastal drainages, eastward to rivers including the Nipoué and Cess (Cestos), with records from Guinea, Liberia, Côte d'Ivoire, and Ghana.
The species occupies benthopelagic habitats in rivers and streams and has a reputation for tolerating a wide range of water conditions. In the West African coastal zone, stream chemistry can vary from relatively soft and slightly acidic in forested catchments to harder, more neutral water in open savanna drainages. Water temperatures in the lowland West African coastal zone are warm year-round, and aquarium sources record an optimal range of 73–81 °F, consistent with its tropical origins.
Feeding
Like the great majority of barbs in the genus Enteromius, E. trispilos is an omnivore. Wild fish feed on a combination of small invertebrates, plant matter, algae, and organic detritus picked from the substrate and water column. The species' benthopelagic habit places it in contact with both bottom-associated prey and mid-water food items.
In the aquarium it accepts the full range of standard foods without difficulty: quality flake and small pellet foods form a practical staple, supplemented with live or frozen bloodworm, brine shrimp, and daphnia. Some plant-based food — algae wafers, blanched greens — rounds out the diet and reflects the omnivorous feeding ecology of the wild fish.
Mating
Enteromius trispilos is an egg-scattering, non-guarding spawner. Like virtually all cyprinid barbs, it forms no lasting pair bond and constructs no nest. When a female is ripe, one or more males drive her actively through vegetation or along the substrate, pressing close alongside her until eggs and milt are released together. The spawning act is brief and may be repeated multiple times in a session.
There is no courtship territory defended beyond the immediate chase, and no bond is maintained after eggs are shed. Both sexes return immediately to normal foraging behaviour. The adhesive eggs fall among plants or onto the substrate, where they are left entirely to chance — or eaten by the adults themselves.
Breeding
Enteromius trispilos reproduces as a typical egg-scattering barb with no parental care of any kind. Adults eat their own eggs readily, so any attempt to raise fry in captivity requires separating the adults from the spawn immediately after spawning.
A standard approach uses a shallow, well-planted or moss-filled spawning vessel with soft, slightly acid to neutral water at around 77 °F. A conditioned pair or trio is introduced in the evening; spawning typically occurs the following morning. The scattered adhesive eggs hatch in one to two days at tropical temperatures, and the larvae become free-swimming a few days later. Initial foods are infusoria and micro-organisms, followed by newly hatched brine shrimp as the fry grow. The species is classified as oviparous with egg-scatter reproduction.
In the aquarium
Enteromius trispilos is a robust and tolerant species well suited to a community aquarium. Aquarium sources recommend a minimum tank size of around 55 US gal for a group, reflecting its active, mid-water shoaling nature and its adult size of up to 4 in. It thrives across a broad water chemistry range — pH 6.0–7.5, general hardness roughly 3–15 dGH, and temperatures of 73–81 °F — and is described as highly tolerant, making it accessible to hobbyists who cannot maintain ultra-soft or ultra-hard water.
It is best kept in a group of six or more to express natural shoaling behaviour. Decor of plants, wood, and open swimming areas suits it well. Its bold three-spot pattern makes individual fish easy to track within the shoal. The species is not commonly seen in the hobby but is available through specialist West African fish importers and adapts readily to captive life when provided with adequate space and appropriate companions.
Conservation
Enteromius trispilos is assessed as Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List. The species has a broad distribution across multiple coastal river systems in West Africa — Guinea, Liberia, Côte d'Ivoire and Ghana — and no evidence of a range-wide population decline has been documented.
The West African coastal zone does face ongoing environmental pressures relevant to freshwater fishes, including deforestation, agricultural run-off, sedimentation, and small-scale water extraction from stream catchments. However, the species' documented tolerance of varied water conditions and its occurrence across multiple independent river systems offer some resilience against localised threats. The aquarium trade draws only modestly on this species, and captive breeding can supply demand without systematic wild collection.
