Enteromius venustus was described by Bailey in 1980. The species belongs to genus Enteromius, a large and taxonomically complex African assemblage of small barbs that was historically placed within the broadly defined genus Barbus and later Puntius. Modern molecular and morphological studies have progressively separated the African small-barb fauna from the Asian Puntius lineage; Enteromius is now the accepted name for a substantial portion of the sub-Saharan species.
No old synonym under Barbus venustus or Puntius venustus has been confirmed in the literature; searches for a Barbus venustus combination return unrelated species, suggesting the species was described directly into a context that recognised the African distinction. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) is the governing authority for the valid combination Enteromius venustus (Bailey, 1980). The parenthetical authority indicates a subsequent change of genus from the original description.
The species epithet venustus is Latin for 'pretty' or 'charming', an allusion to the attractive appearance of the fish — a fitting name for a small, delicate barb of East African waters.
Morphology
Enteromius venustus is a very small barb, with a maximum recorded standard length of 1 in — exceptionally small even within a genus of predominantly diminutive species. The body is slender and laterally compressed in the manner typical of small riverine barbs, suited to life in shallow, vegetated margins.

This habitat — sheltered, vegetated shallows of a tropical East African reservoir — implies warm, relatively stable water temperatures and conditions shaped by the surrounding savanna and montane catchment. Feeding

For hobbyists who might encounter it through specialist collections, its habitat profile — shallow, warm, vegetated tropical freshwater — suggests it would require a planted tank with gentle flow and warm water reflecting its East African provenance, and a diet of small live and frozen invertebrates suited to its benthic feeding style. It should be kept in a group, as small barbs are shoaling fish. Its miniature size would make it vulnerable to larger tankmates.

The Pangani basin faces significant water-resource pressures including hydroelectric development, irrigation withdrawal, and agricultural encroachment, all of which affect flow regimes and riparian habitats. A species of such restricted range and specialized shallow-grass-bed habitat would be inherently vulnerable to these changes. A formal reassessment with contemporary survey data would be needed to determine whether the species qualifies for a threatened category.
