Hampala bimaculata is a medium-to-large cyprinid endemic to the island of Borneo, reaching up to 19.5 in in total length — the largest member of the small genus Hampala. Originally described from Borneo as Barbus hampal bimaculata by Popta in 1905 and later moved to its current combination, it inhabits clear-flowing rivers and streams in Indonesian Kalimantan, including within the protected forests of Betung Kerihun National Park. Though barely known in the aquarium trade, it occupies an important ecological role as a mid-level predator in Bornean river systems and has been the subject of recent studies on its reproductive biology and population dynamics.

Taxonomy & naming

Hampala bimaculata was originally described by the Dutch zoologist C. M. L. Popta in 1905 as Barbus hampal bimaculata, based on material from Borneo. The species was later transferred to the genus Hampala, with the parenthetical authority (Popta, 1905) marking that move out of Barbus. Kottelat et al. (1993) in their foundational work on the freshwater fishes of Western Indonesia and Sulawesi documented the accepted combination Hampala bimaculata (Popta, 1905), which the Catalog of Fishes recognises as the valid name.

The genus Hampala belongs to the family Cyprinidae, subfamily Smiliogastrinae — the same broad grouping that contains many of the familiar Asian barbs. The name Hampala derives from a local Javanese vernacular name applied to fishes of this genus. The species epithet bimaculata (Latin: two-spotted) likely refers to a pattern feature noted in the type specimens. The species is a senior synonym within the genus and should not be confused with the more widespread Hampala macrolepidota, the 'hampala barb' of Indochina and the Malay Peninsula, which has a different distribution and greater commercial profile.

Morphology

Hampala bimaculata is the largest species in its genus, with a recorded maximum total length of 19.5 in, though most wild specimens are likely considerably smaller. Like other members of Hampala, it has a moderately elongated, laterally compressed body typical of riverine predatory cyprinids — more fusiform than the deep-bodied smaller barbs, suited to holding station in flowing water and pursuing prey.

Detailed morphological descriptions from the original literature are sparse in widely available sources, but the genus Hampala is characterised by a distinctly forked tail, a slightly subterminal or terminal mouth, and generally silvery to golden flanks. The specific markings that gave rise to the name bimaculata (two-spotted) are not well-documented in current accessible sources; field photographs from Bornean rivers show a fish with a dark lateral stripe or spot pattern, though published descriptions in English are limited. Body coloration in freshly caught fish typically includes metallic flanks and fin pigmentation consistent with a river-dwelling predator.

Habitat

Hampala bimaculata is a Bornean endemic, confined in the available literature to the clear-flowing rivers and streams of Indonesian West Kalimantan, with documented populations within the Betung Kerihun National Park — one of the largest protected forest complexes on Borneo. FishBase records it as a benthopelagic species of tropical freshwater, occupying latitudes from approximately 0°N to 7°N.

The species favours clear, well-oxygenated riverine environments rather than the blackwater peat-swamp systems that characterise lowland coastal Borneo. Clear-flowing forest rivers in the interior of Borneo are soft to moderately hard, with temperatures in the tropical range typical of equatorial lowland and foothill streams. A population and spawning-site study (Soetignya et al., 2016) documented its riverine habitat within the national park, noting its preference for stretches of clear flowing water — the kind of intact forest river that has become increasingly scarce across much of Borneo.

Feeding

FishBase records a trophic level of 3.9 (± 0.7) for Hampala bimaculata, placing it clearly in the predatory range — well above the omnivore baseline of roughly 2.0–3.0 and consistent with a fish that targets other fishes and larger invertebrates rather than grazing on algae or detritus. At 19.5 in maximum length, it is large enough to take substantial prey.

The closely related Hampala macrolepidota is a known piscivore in Indochina and the Malay Peninsula, and the feeding ecology of H. bimaculata is likely broadly similar — an ambush or pursuit predator that takes smaller fishes, large aquatic invertebrates and crustaceans from the water column and near the riverbed. Specific dietary studies for this species are not widely available in the English-language literature.

Mating

Hampala bimaculata is an egg-scattering, non-guarding spawner, consistent with the reproductive biology of cyprinids generally and of Hampala in particular. A study on the ovarian development and spawning patterns of wild H. bimaculata in Borneo (Widadi et al., 2017, AACL Bioflux) documented natural reproductive activity in the field, providing the basis for understanding its mating behaviour.

Like other large riverine barbs and the broader mahseer and barb clade, H. bimaculata is likely a seasonal broadcast spawner that times reproduction to river conditions — possibly the rising-water phase associated with rainfall. During spawning, males pursue gravid females and eggs and milt are released together over the substrate or in the water column. No nest is built, no pair bond is maintained beyond the spawning act, and no territory is defended.

Breeding

The reproductive biology of Hampala bimaculata in nature has been studied by Widadi et al. (2017), who documented ovarian development and spawning patterns in wild Bornean populations. As an egg-scattering cyprinid, H. bimaculata releases adhesive or semi-adhesive eggs that settle over gravel or among substrate in the river, where they receive no parental attention whatsoever — a pattern universal across Hampala and the broader family Cyprinidae.

FishBase records medium population resilience for this species, with a minimum population doubling time of 1.4–4.4 years, consistent with a moderately fecund fish of this size. There are no records of this species being bred in captivity, and it is not present in the ornamental trade. Its reproductive seasonality in Borneo is likely tied to the hydrological cycle of the Kapuas or other Kalimantan river systems.

In the aquarium

Hampala bimaculata is not an aquarium fish. At a maximum recorded length of 19.5 in, it is far too large for the domestic aquarium hobby, and it is not available through the ornamental trade. No husbandry literature exists for this species, and it is unlikely to be encountered outside a specialist public aquarium or a research facility.

For aquarists interested in large Bornean cyprinids or the genus Hampala, the smaller and more accessible Hampala macrolepidota (typically 8–12 in in practice, though it too grows large) occasionally enters the trade as a juvenile but quickly outgrows most aquaria. Hampala bimaculata, as a Bornean endemic predatory barb, is a fish of the wild river rather than the home aquarium.

Conservation

Hampala bimaculata is assessed as Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List, with the assessment dated 2 April 2020. The assessment notes no documented population-level threats severe enough to qualify the species for a threatened category at the time of evaluation. Its presence within the protected forest of Betung Kerihun National Park in West Kalimantan provides a measure of habitat security.

Nevertheless, the broader Bornean freshwater fauna faces serious long-term pressure from deforestation, agricultural conversion (particularly oil palm expansion), gold and coal mining that silts and degrades rivers, and dam construction for hydroelectric development in Kalimantan. As a clear-water riverine endemic, H. bimaculata depends on intact forest catchments; rivers flowing through deforested or mined landscapes typically shift from clear to turbid and warm, conditions poorly suited to this species. Continued monitoring of its populations and the integrity of its river habitats — especially in protected areas like Betung Kerihun — remains important for ensuring this Bornean endemic does not move toward a threatened status in future assessments.
