Taxonomy & naming
Hampala katibas was described by Tan and Grinang in 2025 and published in the Raffles Bulletin of Zoology. The holotype (ZRC 65740, 5 in SL) was collected from the Sungei Merating, a tributary within the Ulu Katibas area of Sarawak, Malaysia. The species name katibas refers directly to this type locality — the Katibas River sub-basin draining into the Rejang River, the longest river in Malaysia.
The genus Hampala comprises large, predatory cyprinids sometimes called hampala barbs or jungle perch in English-language trade literature. The genus is native to mainland Southeast Asia and Sundaland and has long required revision; H. katibas is distinct from H. bimaculata in meristics and body markings, with lateral line scales of 25–26 (mode 25) and two rounded black blotches rather than the curved bars of that species. The description brings to light a form that was likely long confused with other Hampala in the Bornean fauna. No prior combination under Barbus or Puntius applies to this species; it has been assigned to Hampala from its original description.
Morphology
Hampala katibas reaches at least 7 in standard length, with the original description reporting specimens from 3–11 in SL, indicating that adults considerably larger than the holotype exist within the known range. Like other members of Hampala, it is a moderately elongate, laterally compressed barb with a subterminal mouth suited to seizing prey.
The species is diagnosed by two large black blotches on the body (the anterior bar spanning 2–5 scales in width, the posterior bar 1.5–4 scales), both blotches visible in juveniles as well as adults. Upper and lower edges of the caudal fin carry a black marginal band. All fins are orange in life — a striking coloration that separates H. katibas from Hampala bimaculata, which bears two curved black bars rather than blotches and lacks the same overall orange fin colouration. Dorsal soft rays number 11; anal soft rays 7–8; lateral line scales 25–26.
Habitat
Hampala katibas inhabits the river systems of central Sarawak and Brunei Darussalam on Borneo. Known drainages include the Rejang River (via the Katibas sub-basin), the Tatau River near Bintulu, the Baram River, and the Belait and Temburong rivers in Brunei Darussalam; it may also occur in the Tasik Merimbun lake in Tutong district. The authors noted its likely presence in southwestern Sabah, extending the probable range further north on the island.
The Rejang and Baram systems are large, turbid-to-clear lowland and sub-montane rivers draining tropical rainforest. Hampala species in Sundaland are typically found in the main channels and larger tributaries of medium to major rivers, often over gravel or sand substrates in areas with some current. Specific water-chemistry data for H. katibas have not yet been published, but the wider Bornean lowland river context suggests warm tropical water — generally soft to moderately hard and slightly acidic to near-neutral in undisturbed forest catchments.
Feeding
Hampala species as a group are opportunistic predators, taking smaller fish, insects and other invertebrates; larger individuals are apex predators within their river reaches. The elongate body, subterminal to terminal mouth, and reported adult size well above 8 in SL are consistent with a fish-eating lifestyle.
No specific feeding studies have been published for H. katibas. By analogy with the well-studied H. macrolepidota and H. bimaculata, juveniles likely feed heavily on aquatic insects, crustaceans, and small fish, with adults shifting toward piscivory. In the aquarium, members of the genus are typically offered live or frozen fish, large invertebrates, and meaty prepared foods.
Mating
No reproductive observations have been recorded specifically for Hampala katibas. The genus is part of the family Cyprinidae, within which egg-scattering without parental care is the ancestral and predominant reproductive strategy. Courtship likely follows the pattern seen in other large riverine barbs: active male pursuit of gravid females through open water or over spawning substrate, culminating in the simultaneous release of eggs and milt.
Large river cyprinids such as those in Hampala are commonly seasonal spawners, timing reproduction to the flood pulse of tropical river systems. Rising water levels and temperature shifts associated with monsoon inundation may act as spawning triggers, dispersing adhesive or semi-buoyant eggs over gravel runs and inundated vegetation. No pair bond is formed, and no post-spawning association between adults has been observed in congeners.
Breeding
Hampala katibas has not been bred in captivity as of the date of this article. The species was formally described only in 2025, and no aquarium breeding accounts have yet appeared in the literature or hobbyist records. Its relatively large adult size — potentially exceeding 10 in SL — would require substantial aquaria, and the species is not currently established in the ornamental trade.
Broadly, Hampala species are egg-scatterers that release adhesive eggs over the substrate or among vegetation with no parental care; eggs and larvae are left entirely to their own fate. Captive breeding of large riverine barbs generally requires spacious tanks, soft to moderately hard water at tropical temperatures, and conditioning on live or meaty foods prior to spawning attempts. Whether H. katibas could be maintained and bred in the hobby remains to be established.
In the aquarium
Hampala katibas is not currently available in the ornamental fish trade and has only been known to science since 2025. Its congener H. bimaculata is occasionally encountered in specialist Bornean fish collections but remains uncommon outside of Southeast Asia. Were H. katibas to become available, its ultimate size — potentially over 10 in SL — would limit it to large aquaria of 105 US gal or more, and its predatory nature would preclude keeping it with smaller fish.
For those interested in the Hampala complex as a group, the fish are active, strong-swimming predators that benefit from good oxygenation, some current, and large open swimming spaces. A dark substrate and subdued lighting tend to reduce stress. Feeding on meaty foods — large insects, earthworms, fish fillets, or whole feeder fish — reflects their natural diet. Peaceful among similar-sized conspecifics or equally robust cyprinids, they become problematic in mixed-size communities.
Conservation
Hampala katibas has not been assessed by the IUCN Red List; having been described in 2025, it is currently Not Evaluated (NE). Its known distribution spans a reasonably broad swath of northern Borneo — central to northern Sarawak and Brunei Darussalam — which suggests it is not hyper-endemic, but the full extent of its range and population status remain unknown.
The primary conservation concerns for freshwater fishes across Sarawak and Brunei mirror those throughout Sundaland: extensive logging and conversion of rainforest to oil palm and acacia plantations, which degrades river water quality through sedimentation and agrochemical runoff; dam construction for hydroelectric power; and expansion of aquaculture. The Rejang River catchment has experienced significant deforestation pressure in recent decades. As a larger-bodied, presumably longer-lived predator near the top of its river community, H. katibas may be sensitive to fishing pressure from subsistence and artisanal fisheries in addition to habitat change. Formal assessment and range surveys would be the appropriate first steps toward understanding any conservation need.
