Taxonomy & naming
Hampala lopezi was described by the American ichthyologist Albert William Herre in 1924, with the type locality given as Langbuan, Busuanga Island, Palawan Province in the Philippines. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer) recognises the valid combination as Hampala lopezi Herre, 1924, and no subsequent generic reassignment is recorded in the standard references.
The genus Hampala belongs to the family Cyprinidae and encompasses a small group of medium-to-large, predatory barbs distributed across mainland Southeast Asia and the Sunda Islands. Most Hampala species are considerably larger than lopezi and are known from Indochina, the Malay Peninsula, and the Greater Sunda Islands. The Philippine occurrence of a Hampala makes lopezi biogeographically notable, as the genus reaches what appears to be the eastern limit of its range on Busuanga. No synonyms are currently listed under this name, and it is not known under an old Puntius or Barbus combination in the literature.
Morphology
Hampala lopezi is a small barb with a maximum recorded standard length of 3.5 in — substantially smaller than its congeners such as H. macrolepidota, which can exceed 19.5 in. Like others in the genus it is expected to have a moderately elongate, laterally compressed body with large scales and a relatively large mouth suited to a predatory or omnivorous diet. No detailed meristic or osteological description is available in the hobbyist literature, and comprehensive morphological data remain sparse outside the original description.
The benthopelagic habit recorded by FishBase places it in the lower-to-mid water column of freshwater streams and rivers, consistent with the foraging style typical of Hampala, which combines pursuit of small prey with opportunistic feeding at all water levels.
Habitat
Hampala lopezi is endemic to Busuanga Island, which lies in the northern part of the Palawan archipelago in the western Philippines. FishBase records it as a freshwater, benthopelagic species occupying tropical lowland waters. By analogy with other Hampala and with Sundaland cyprinids of similar ecotype, it is likely associated with clear, well-oxygenated streams or river margins over substrates of sand and gravel, potentially with some marginal vegetation and woody debris.
The IUCN assessment notes that the species' range is confined entirely to Busuanga Island, making it highly vulnerable to local habitat disturbance. The surrounding Calamian Islands group includes some of the least-altered forest in the Philippine archipelago, but agricultural encroachment and upland deforestation continue to affect water quality in the lowland drainages where this species would occur. Water temperature and chemistry data specific to H. lopezi habitats are not recorded in the available literature.
Feeding
Detailed dietary data for Hampala lopezi are not available in the published literature. The genus Hampala as a whole is characterised as an omnivorous predator: larger species are well documented taking small fishes, invertebrates including insects and crustaceans, and varying amounts of plant material. Given lopezi's much smaller adult size, it likely focuses on aquatic invertebrates, insect larvae, and small crustaceans, with some algal or plant material opportunistically ingested.
In the aquarium, members of the genus generally accept live and frozen invertebrate foods readily, and can be maintained on good-quality sinking pellets supplemented with live or frozen prey. For lopezi specifically, data are absent and extrapolation from congeners is the only basis available.
Mating
No spawning observations specific to Hampala lopezi have been published. Like all barbs, it is presumed to be an egg-scattering, non-guarding spawner with no parental care. In the broader Hampala group and in cyprinids generally, courtship involves a driving male pursuing a gravid female, with eggs and milt released simultaneously over suitable substrate — fine gravel, sand, or among plant roots.
No pair bond is formed, no territory is established beyond the immediate act of spawning, and the adults scatter and separate immediately after releasing eggs. Spawning in large river Hampala species is typically triggered by seasonal conditions, including elevated water temperature and rising water levels associated with the onset of the rainy season, which may also govern reproductive timing in lopezi.
Breeding
Hampala lopezi has not been bred in captivity in any documented account available in the hobbyist or scientific literature. Captive breeding information is therefore entirely absent for this species. The general egg-scattering pattern common to the family applies: eggs would be adhesive and deposited over substrate or vegetation, hatch relatively rapidly at tropical water temperatures, and receive no care from either parent.
Given its Endangered status and restricted range, ex situ conservation breeding has not yet been established, and the species does not appear in the ornamental trade in any meaningful quantity. Any future captive-breeding effort would require collection of wild-sourced broodstock from Busuanga Island under appropriate permits.
In the aquarium
Hampala lopezi is essentially unknown in the aquarium hobby. It is not available through the ornamental trade and is unlikely to appear given its Endangered status, restricted Philippine range, and the difficulty of legally collecting wild specimens. Aquarists interested in the Hampala genus are far more likely to encounter H. macrolepidota or related mainland species, which are occasionally imported as juveniles.
For reference, the genus thrives in spacious aquaria with well-filtered, oxygen-rich water, moderate to strong flow, and open swimming space with some cover. Adult Hampala are predatory and should not be housed with fishes small enough to be eaten. The small size of lopezi (to ~3.5 in SL) would make it more manageable than its larger congeners if it were ever to become available through conservation-led programmes.
Conservation
Hampala lopezi is assessed as Endangered (EN) on the IUCN Red List, with the assessment published in September 2020 and re-evaluated in 2021 (taxon ID 9669, assessment ID 91003779). The species is known exclusively from Busuanga Island, Palawan Province, Philippines — an extremely restricted range that immediately elevates vulnerability to any local disturbance. Population trend is recorded as unknown.
The primary threats documented in the IUCN assessment are agricultural and forestry-related pollution, deforestation in the catchment, unsustainable land-use practices, and consequent soil erosion and sedimentation of lowland streams. These pressures, common across the Philippine archipelago, reduce water quality and alter the physical structure of the stream habitats on which this and other endemic freshwater fishes depend. The species does not benefit from captive-breeding or active in situ conservation measures that are documented in the literature, and its remote location and low profile in both science and the hobby mean that targeted conservation effort has been minimal. Its long-term persistence depends on the protection of Busuanga's remaining lowland forest and stream corridors.
