Taxonomy & naming
Hampala lupar was described by Heok Hee Tan and Josie Grinang in the Raffles Bulletin of Zoology (volume 73, pages 243–260, 2025), making it one of the most recently recognised species in the genus. The holotype (ZRC 60435, 6 in SL) was collected from Sungei Engkari in the Lupar basin, Sri Aman Division, Sarawak, Borneo. The Catalog of Fishes is the authority for valid names in the Cyprinidae, and the species is recognised under the current combination Hampala lupar Tan & Grinang, 2025.
The genus Hampala — commonly called hampala barbs or jungle perch barbs in the angling literature — contains a small number of medium to large Southeast Asian cyprinids characterised by their elongate, moderately compressed bodies, forked caudal fins, and the tendency toward piscivory as adults. Hampala lupar is most closely allied to H. bimaculata, from which it differs principally in the number of lateral body bars: three in H. lupar versus two in H. bimaculata. A second species occurring on the same side of the Lupar Geological Divide, H. katibas, is distinguished by its different bar configuration and distribution. The Lupar Geological Divide thus acts as a biogeographic barrier within this complex, and H. lupar is confined to basins west of that divide.
Morphology
Hampala lupar is a medium-sized barb reaching a maximum of approximately 6.5 in standard length (6.5 in SL for the largest examined specimen; FishBase records 7 in SL). It has the moderately elongate, laterally compressed body typical of the genus, with a forked tail and a benthopelagic body plan suited to life in flowing water.
The most diagnostic feature is the pattern of three bold black bars on the flanks, all apparent even at the juvenile stage. Bar 0, unique to this species within the H. bimaculata complex, is situated just posterior to the opercle and spans approximately 2.5–3 scales in width. Bar 1 (3–3.5 scales wide) is positioned at the origin of the dorsal fin, and bar 2 (3–4 scales wide) lies between the anal fin base and the caudal peduncle. The upper and lower margins of the caudal fin are edged with black bands. All fins are orange to reddish-orange in life; the dorsal and pectoral fins carry black leading edges. Meristic counts from the original description: dorsal fin rays D 11.5, anal rays A 7.5, pectorals P 15, ventrals V 9; lateral line scales 26–27; circumpeduncular scales 13.
Habitat
Hampala lupar is known from the Lupar and Sarawak river basins in Sarawak, Borneo, at elevations up to roughly 1273 ft above sea level at the type locality (Sungei Engkari, 01°24.881°N, 111°59.960°E). The original description places it in fast-flowing mountain and lowland streams with rocky to sandy substrates — the rheophilic habitat characteristic of the genus Hampala more broadly.
Like congeners such as H. macrolepidota, adults of the genus favour clear, running water with good oxygenation rather than still or stagnant environments. Juveniles of Hampala species typically occupy slower-flowing or marginal habitats before moving into stronger currents as they grow. Water chemistry in the hill streams of Sarawak is generally soft to moderately hard and slightly acidic to neutral, consistent with the tropical lowland and submontane streams of Borneo's interior.
Feeding
Hampala lupar has not been the subject of dedicated stomach-content studies, but genus-level biology provides a reliable framework. Juvenile hampalas are generalist feeders, taking invertebrates, small crustaceans, and plant matter, but the group is well documented to shift toward a predominantly piscivorous diet as individuals grow. Adults of Hampala species are active predators in flowing water, using speed and their forked-tailed body plan to pursue small fish.
In the aquarium or when encountered by anglers, hampalas respond to a variety of live and artificial prey. The shift to fish-eating with size means that Hampala lupar, once past the juvenile stage, would be a piscivore in its native fast-flowing stream habitats of Sarawak.
Mating
No specific spawning observations have been published for Hampala lupar. Cyprinids of this type — medium to large rheophilic barbs — are egg-scattering, non-guarding spawners. Spawning is typically cued by seasonal rainfall and rising water levels in the rivers of Borneo, which trigger migrations into shallower, faster-flowing water.
Courtship follows the barb pattern: a driving male pursues a gravid female through the current, and eggs and milt are released together near or over suitable substrate — gravel, rock, or sand. There is no pair bond, no territory held beyond the moment of spawning, and no parental involvement after the eggs are shed.
Breeding
Hampala lupar is a wild-caught species described only in 2025 and is not established in the aquarium trade, so no captive breeding records exist. Based on genus biology, it is an egg-scatterer with no parental care: adhesive or semi-adhesive eggs are broadcast over gravel or substrate in flowing water, the adults take no further part, and incubation and larval development proceed in the current without guarding.
Large river hampalas in Southeast Asia are generally seasonal broadcast spawners, their reproductive cycles tied to the monsoon-driven flood pulse of Bornean rivers. Fecundity and egg size have not been reported for this species specifically.
In the aquarium
Hampala lupar is not present in the ornamental fish trade and is unlikely to appear in the near future — it is a newly described endemic from remote hill streams of Sarawak and has no history in the hobby. Its congener H. macrolepidota occasionally enters the trade as a pond or large-aquarium fish in Southeast Asia, and the care requirements of that species give a rough guide: a large, well-oxygenated tank or pond with strong current, warm water (around 75–82 °F), clean slightly acidic to neutral conditions, and a protein-rich diet are the baseline.
Adults are piscivores and would require live or meaty foods and a tank large enough to accommodate a fish approaching 6.5 in or more. Hampala species are active, fast-moving mid-water fish that are best maintained by specialist keepers with very large systems. For now, Hampala lupar is of greatest interest as a subject of field research rather than a hobbyist fish.
Conservation
Hampala lupar has not been evaluated by the IUCN Red List — it was described in June 2025 and is too recently recognised to have received a formal assessment. Its known distribution is confined to the Lupar and Sarawak river basins in Sarawak, Malaysian Borneo, giving it a restricted endemic range by any measure.
Borneo's interior streams face ongoing pressure from land-use change: logging, oil-palm expansion, and associated sedimentation and water-quality degradation affect many freshwater endemics in Sarawak. The Lupar basin is not exempt from these pressures. Given its apparently small range, restriction to fast-flowing hill streams, and the pace of habitat loss in interior Borneo, Hampala lupar warrants monitoring as survey work and IUCN assessment catch up with its formal recognition.
