Taxonomy & naming
Labeobarbus leleupanus was described by the Belgian ichthyologist Hubert Matthes in 1959 from material collected in the Rusizi River and associated drainages in Burundi. The species epithet honours Narcisse Leleup (1912–2001), a Belgian entomologist who made extensive zoological collections in the Congo basin for the Royal Museum for Central Africa in Tervuren during the 1940s and 1950s and later led the Belgian Zoological Expedition to the Galápagos Islands and Ecuador in 1964–1965.
The genus Labeobarbus has a complex taxonomic history. Much of the large African barb fauna was formerly grouped under the broad genus Barbus or the even broader Puntius, and the rearrangement of African cyprinids over the past several decades has placed the larger, more robust species — including the yellowfishes and their relatives — in Labeobarbus. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) records the current valid combination as Labeobarbus leleupanus (Matthes, 1959), with the parenthetical authority reflecting Matthes's original placement in a different genus. FishBase carries the species under this combination.
Morphology
Labeobarbus leleupanus is a moderately sized barb reaching a maximum recorded standard length of 8.5 in, consistent with the medium range of the African Labeobarbus assemblage. Like other members of the genus it has a robust, fusiform body suited to life in flowing water, with the rounded, fleshy lips and subterminal mouth characteristic of large African barbs that graze on algae and bottom material.
Detailed colour descriptions in readily accessible literature are sparse for this species. FishBase classifies it as benthopelagic, indicating it occupies the lower water column and substrate zone in its native rivers and lake margins. Sexual dimorphism has not been described in detail in the available sources, though in African Labeobarbus generally, gravid females tend to be visibly fuller-bodied than males.
Habitat
Labeobarbus leleupanus is native to the Rusizi River and the Lake Tanganyika basin, restricted to Burundi. The Rusizi (also spelled Ruzizi) drains south from Lake Kivu into the northern end of Lake Tanganyika, flowing through a broad valley on the Burundi–Democratic Republic of Congo border. FishBase classifies the species as a freshwater, benthopelagic inhabitant of rivers, freshwater lakes, and inland deltas.
The Rusizi system encompasses a range of habitat types, from the faster, more turbulent upper reaches to broader, slower reaches nearer the lake. Lake Tanganyika itself, where the species may venture into nearshore zones, is deep, alkaline, and ancient. Water temperatures in the Rusizi valley and northern Tanganyika are warm to moderate, reflecting the mid-altitude equatorial setting. The species' restriction to this single river–lake system defines its narrow endemic range and underpins its conservation status.
Feeding
FishBase records Labeobarbus leleupanus as phytophagous, feeding mainly on filamentous algae. This is consistent with the feeding ecology of many large African Labeobarbus, which are equipped with fleshy lips and a subterminal mouth for grazing periphyton and soft plant material from submerged rocks, woody debris and the riverbed.
In addition to filamentous algae, large African barbs in similar ecological positions often consume organic detritus and occasionally plant fragments or invertebrates encountered during grazing, though the available sources for this species specify algae as the primary dietary component. This phytophagous habit makes the species functionally important in nutrient cycling within its native river system.
Mating
Labeobarbus leleupanus, like all members of the family Cyprinidae, is an egg-scattering, non-guarding spawner. No parental care occurs at any stage. In large riverine barbs and African yellowfishes generally, spawning is typically a seasonal event tied to hydrological cues — rising water levels or the onset of the rainy season — when adults congregate and broadcast eggs and milt over gravel or rocky substrates in flowing water.
Male Labeobarbus pursue gravid females through the water column and over the substrate during courtship. Eggs and milt are released together in brief, repeated contacts, producing adhesive or semi-adhesive eggs that settle among gravel and substrate particles. No nest is constructed and no pair bond persists beyond the spawning act.
Breeding
Specific breeding accounts for Labeobarbus leleupanus in captivity are not documented in the available sources. By analogy with other large African Labeobarbus and riverine barbs of similar ecology, spawning in the wild is likely seasonal and triggered by environmental cues associated with the Rusizi's flood regime.
The species has not been established in the ornamental trade and is not typically kept in aquaria. Captive breeding details therefore remain undescribed. The egg-scattering reproductive mode — eggs broadcast over substrate with no parental care — is common to all cyprinids and would apply here. Adults of many large barbs readily consume eggs following spawning, a further reason no guarding behaviour has evolved.
In the aquarium
Labeobarbus leleupanus is not an aquarium fish in the conventional sense. Its restricted endemic range, lack of presence in the ornamental trade, and Vulnerable conservation status mean it is essentially unknown in hobbyist collections. The information available on FishBase and the IUCN Red List concerns wild populations only.
For completeness: a fish of this size (up to 8.5 in SL) and ecology would require a spacious, well-oxygenated aquarium with good flow and a phytophagous diet supplemented with algae-based foods. Its Tanganyika basin origins suggest moderately alkaline, hard water, though the Rusizi River is distinct from the lake proper. Keeping this species would be inappropriate given its conservation status, and no captive husbandry guidance is available.
Conservation
Labeobarbus leleupanus is assessed as Vulnerable (VU) on the IUCN Red List under criteria B1ab(iii,v), with the most recent assessment dated 20 February 2025. The B1 criterion reflects a restricted extent of occurrence, and the subcriteria point to continuing decline in the area, extent and/or quality of habitat (iii) and in the number of mature individuals (v).
The species is endemic to Burundi, confined to the Rusizi River and the Burundian portion of the Lake Tanganyika basin — a very small geographic footprint that leaves it highly exposed to localised threats. The Rusizi catchment faces pressure from agricultural runoff, sedimentation from deforested hillslopes, and increasing water extraction in a densely populated region. Lake Tanganyika itself faces overfishing pressure across its basin states, and nearshore areas accessible to small-scale fisheries are subject to intensive harvest. The combination of a small range, declining habitat quality, and likely fisheries pressure qualifies the species for Vulnerable status under IUCN criteria.
