Labeobarbus microbarbis is a freshwater barb endemic to Lake Luhondo, a small crater lake in northwestern Rwanda, and the only barb known from that lake. Described from a single holotype by David and Poll in 1937 under the original combination Barbus microbarbis, it has never been recorded again despite subsequent surveys, and the IUCN Red List assessed it as Extinct in 2015. The extinction is attributed to the introduction of alien fish — tilapia and Haplochromis species — into Lake Luhondo, whose predatory or competitive pressure extirpated what was already a very small, isolated population. Labeobarbus microbarbis stands as a cautionary example of how quickly a narrowly endemic freshwater fish can be lost when alien species enter an isolated lake system.

Taxonomy & naming

Labeobarbus microbarbis was described by J. L. David and Max Poll in 1937 under the original combination Barbus microbarbis, collected from Lake Luhondo in Rwanda. The parenthetical authority in the current valid name reflects its subsequent transfer to Labeobarbus — a large African genus of cyprinids that includes the yellowfishes of southern Africa and a range of highland and lowland river barbs across the continent. GBIF and FishBase confirm the valid combination as Labeobarbus microbarbis (David & Poll, 1937).

The species epithet microbarbis is derived from Greek mikros (small) and the genus name Barbus, indicating a small barb — apt for a species apparently modest in size relative to many Labeobarbus congeners. The species is known from a single holotype specimen, and no additional material has been collected in the decades since its description despite surveys of the lake, leaving morphological details of the species based entirely on that type.

Morphology

Labeobarbus microbarbis reached a maximum recorded total length of 10.5 in per FishBase, placing it in the mid-range for the genus. Beyond maximum size, morphological data for this species are extremely sparse: it is known only from its holotype, and no detailed published redescription drawing on multiple specimens exists in the accessible literature.

As a member of Labeobarbus — a genus characterised by a subterminal mouth, typically well-developed lips, and an elongate to moderately deep body — L. microbarbis would be expected to share the general body plan of African large barbs. Without additional specimens or a detailed type description in the available cache, further morphological characterisation is not possible; data sparse.

Habitat

Lake Luhondo is a small, deep crater lake situated in the Virunga highlands of northwestern Rwanda, at an elevation of approximately 1,2362 ft above sea level and near coordinates 1°30' S, 29°45' E per the GBIF type-locality record. It is one of a chain of small crater lakes in the region, isolated from major river systems, with cool highland waters typical of high-altitude East African lakes.

Labeobarbus microbarbis was benthopelagic in habit according to FishBase, inhabiting the freshwater column of this crater lake. Its small, isolated range — confined to a single lake — made the species inherently vulnerable to any perturbation of its habitat. The cool, well-oxygenated waters of a highland crater lake at nearly 1,2625 ft elevation would have been the entirety of this species' world.

Feeding

No specific dietary data for Labeobarbus microbarbis are available in the literature or cache. Members of Labeobarbus typically feed on algae, detritus, invertebrates, and plant material, with diet varying across species and habitats. In a small, isolated crater lake, food resources would have been limited to what the lake's productivity could support.

Given its benthopelagic habit and the general trophic ecology of large African barbs, L. microbarbis likely fed on benthic material — algae, invertebrates, and organic detritus from the lake floor — but this inference is not supported by primary data on this species specifically.

Mating

No mating observations for Labeobarbus microbarbis are recorded; the species is known only from its holotype and has been extinct for decades. Barbs as a group are egg-scattering, non-guarding spawners. Labeobarbus species in general are broadcast spawners with no parental care, often undertaking seasonal migrations in river systems to spawn over gravel or other substrates.

In a confined crater lake environment, reproductive behaviour would likely have involved dispersal of eggs over suitable substrates within the lake rather than any upstream migration. There is no evidence of nest-building, mouthbrooding, or parental care in any Labeobarbus, and none is posited for this species.

Breeding

Breeding biology for Labeobarbus microbarbis is unknown; the species has never been maintained in captivity and was extinct before detailed study became possible. In keeping with barb biology generally, it would have been an egg-scatterer producing adhesive eggs over the substrate with no parental care — adults playing no role after spawning, and eggs developing independently.

The species' endemism in a single small lake would have meant its entire breeding population was contained within Lake Luhondo. Once alien fish were introduced and population numbers collapsed, no refuge population existed elsewhere, and recovery was impossible. The species was never bred in captivity.

In the aquarium

Labeobarbus microbarbis has never been kept in an aquarium and cannot be today: the species is extinct. It was never collected alive for the ornamental trade, being a scientifically obscure species from a remote Rwandan crater lake known only from a single museum specimen.

At a maximum length of 10.5 in, it would have been a substantial fish requiring a large aquarium even if it had been available — in the same size class as other large Labeobarbus species sometimes kept by specialist aquarists interested in African cyprinids. This entry is preserved for completeness of the African barb record.

Conservation

Labeobarbus microbarbis is listed as Extinct (EX) on the IUCN Red List, assessed on 6 November 2015. The species has not been recorded from Lake Luhondo despite surveys spanning more than 50 years, and the IUCN assessment attributes its extinction to the introduction of alien fish species — tilapia and Haplochromis — into the lake. These introductions, likely made for food production in a region where protein security has long been a pressure, brought competitive and predatory species into a lake system that had no evolutionary exposure to such pressure.

The loss of L. microbarbis illustrates a pattern repeated across East Africa's smaller crater and rift lakes: narrowly endemic fish persisting for millennia in isolated water bodies erased within years or decades of a single anthropogenic intervention. Lake Luhondo is a small system whose biodiversity was not well documented before the introductions, and it is possible that other endemic taxa were lost at the same time without ever being described. No conservation action is now possible for this species.
