Labeobarbus ruwenzorii is a rare, montane cyprinid endemic to the Ruwenzori region of western Uganda, known only from the fast-flowing highland rivers draining the Rwenzori Mountains — among them the Mubuku and Sibwe — on the edge of the Albertine Rift. Reaching about 9 in in total length, it is a benthopelagic fish of swift, boulder-strewn torrents in one of Africa's most biologically significant mountain ranges, an area recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Its tiny range, dependence on pristine highland conditions, and exposure to the pressures bearing down on montane East African rivers have earned it a Vulnerable assessment on the IUCN Red List.

Taxonomy & naming

Labeobarbus ruwenzorii was described by the French ichthyologist Jacques Pellegrin in 1909, taking the species epithet from the Ruwenzori (Rwenzori) Mountains of Uganda and the Democratic Republic of Congo, where the type material was collected. The authority is rendered in parentheses — (Pellegrin, 1909) — indicating the species has been moved from its original genus since description. Like many large African cyprinids, it has passed through the broad "Barbus" wastebasket as African barb systematics were progressively revised, before being placed in the genus Labeobarbus, which accommodates the large-bodied African yellowfish and allied forms.

The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) recognises Labeobarbus ruwenzorii as the valid combination. The genus Labeobarbus is distinct from the Asian Puntius lineage and is not related to the post-2012 Puntius-split genera (Pethia, Puntigrus, Dawkinsia, etc.) that arose from the reorganisation of South and Southeast Asian barbs.

Morphology

FishBase records a maximum total length of 9 in for Labeobarbus ruwenzorii, consistent with the larger-bodied members of the genus. Like other Labeobarbus, it has the robust, fusiform build suited to life in strong currents, with well-developed musculature along the caudal peduncle and a body shape adapted for holding station in fast water.

The species is benthopelagic, foraging close to or on the substrate among boulders and cobble in its torrent habitat. Specific details of coloration and fin formula are not widely documented in the accessible literature for this little-studied endemic, and morphological data beyond total length are sparse in the available sources.

Habitat

Labeobarbus ruwenzorii is confined to a small cluster of highland rivers in the Ruwenzori region of western Uganda — FishBase notes distribution specifically in the Mubuku and Sibwe River systems. The Rwenzori Mountains, straddling the Uganda-DRC border, form a dramatic barrier of glaciated peaks rising above 5,0 ft; the rivers draining their flanks are cold, highly oxygenated, and characterised by fast, turbulent flow over rock and boulder substrates. FishBase describes the species as occurring in "fast turbulent water with many boulders."

As a highland montane endemic of the Albertine Rift, L. ruwenzorii is almost certainly adapted to cool, well-oxygenated water temperatures well below those of lowland African rivers. Related African Labeobarbus and large Barbus species of savannah and lowland rivers can tolerate 73–86 °F, but this mountain endemic's thermal preference is likely substantially cooler. The Rwenzori Mountains are inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, providing some degree of habitat protection for the river systems within and immediately below the park boundaries.

Feeding

Detailed dietary studies for Labeobarbus ruwenzorii are not available in the accessible literature. By analogy with other large African Labeobarbus species, which are opportunistic omnivores taking algae, plant detritus, invertebrates and occasionally small fish from the substrate and benthos, L. ruwenzorii likely feeds on benthic invertebrates, periphyton, and organic matter associated with the boulder-strewn riffle habitat it occupies.

The benthopelagic habit described by FishBase is consistent with foraging along and among rocks in fast current, where invertebrate drift and algal biofilms are abundant food sources in montane African rivers.

Mating

Like all barbs, Labeobarbus ruwenzorii is an egg-scattering, non-guarding spawner. No specific reproductive studies exist for this species, but large Labeobarbus and African river barbs generally follow a pattern of seasonal spawning tied to river flow and temperature fluctuations, with males actively pursuing gravid females through riffles and over gravel substrates.

Spawning events in large African river barbs often coincide with the onset of rains or rising water levels, which may trigger upstream migrations or movement into spawning-suitable shallows. Courtship involves males driving females and releasing eggs and milt simultaneously over suitable substrate; no pair bond forms and no territory is held beyond the brief act of spawning.

Breeding

Labeobarbus ruwenzorii scatters adhesive or semi-adhesive eggs over gravel and rocky substrates in fast current; no parental care of any kind is provided. Eggs and larvae are left to develop unguarded in the substrate interstices, where the turbulent water supply keeps them oxygenated. Adults do not guard territories, build nests, or attend eggs or fry.

This species has not been bred in captivity under documented aquarium conditions, and given its restricted range, specialist habitat requirements, and Vulnerable conservation status, no commercial breeding programme is known to exist.

In the aquarium

Labeobarbus ruwenzorii is not an aquarium fish and is essentially unknown in the hobby. Its Vulnerable conservation status, extreme range restriction to a handful of highland Ugandan rivers, and dependence on cold, highly oxygenated, fast-flowing montane water make it wholly unsuitable as a trade species. There are no known records of its import, maintenance, or breeding in captivity.

Aquarists interested in large African barbs are better served by the more widely kept yellowfish relatives that are available from specialist suppliers, none of which approach the conservation concerns surrounding L. ruwenzorii.

Conservation

Labeobarbus ruwenzorii is assessed as Vulnerable (VU) on the IUCN Red List under criterion D2, reflecting its extremely restricted range — only the Mubuku and Sibwe River systems of the Ruwenzori region, Uganda. The D2 criterion applies when a species occupies so limited an area of occupancy or number of locations that it is prone to the effects of human activities or stochastic events within a very short time period, making it capable of becoming Critically Endangered or Extinct within a very short time period. FishBase records the IUCN assessment date as 23 August 2021.

The Rwenzori Mountains themselves carry UNESCO World Heritage status, offering some layer of protection, and the rivers monitored within the park boundary include the Mubuku, Nyamwamba, Rwimi, and Lamya. However, rivers extending beyond park boundaries face pressures from agricultural encroachment, water abstraction, and the downstream effects of land-use change on the lower mountain slopes. Climate change poses a long-term threat to the cold montane conditions on which this highland endemic depends — glacial retreat on the Rwenzoris is well documented and the cold-water regime that this species requires may narrow as temperatures rise. Given the species' extreme endemism and specialised habitat, even modest degradation of its small catchment could be catastrophic.
