Taxonomy & naming
Mastacembelus thacbaensis was published by Nguyen, Nguyen & Ngo in 2006, based on material from the Thacba River in Vietnam. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, the authority for valid names) currently treats the name as a junior synonym of Mastacembelus undulatus. The taxonomic situation is compounded by a serious nomenclatural problem: researchers examining Vietnamese Mastacembelidae have noted that the type material for the original description is reportedly lost and the original description was never formally established as a valid publication, rendering the name a nomen nudum — a name without standing under the International Code of Zoological Nomenclature.
The valid species, Mastacembelus undulatus, is recorded from subtropical and tropical Asia, including China and Vietnam, and is itself a poorly-known fish. The genus Mastacembelus is the type genus of the spiny-eel family Mastacembelidae, placed in the order Synbranchiformes alongside the swamp eels (Synbranchidae). This is critical to understanding what the fish is: it is not a true eel. The true eels belong to the entirely separate order Anguilliformes; the eel-like shape of Mastacembelus is a convergent adaptation for burrowing, not evidence of shared ancestry with marine or catadromous eels.
The African members of Mastacembelus were historically split into genera such as Aethiomastacembelus and Caecomastacembelus before being consolidated back into Mastacembelus. M. thacbaensis and M. undulatus belong to the Asian radiation of the genus, distinct from the African species flock that includes the well-known Lake Tanganyika endemics.
Morphology
Morphological data for M. thacbaensis specifically are sparse, as it is known from the original collected material, which is itself of questionable standing, and has not been independently described in detail in the literature. The valid congener M. undulatus reaches a maximum standard length of approximately 12.5 in, giving a sense of the size range likely applicable to this taxon.
Like all spiny eels, the body is greatly elongate, scaleless to the eye, and covered in a coat of protective mucus over tiny embedded scales. The snout is drawn out into the characteristic fleshy, trunk-like rostral projection tipped with tubular nostrils that the genus uses to probe sediment for invertebrate prey. A row of short isolated spines runs along the dorsal surface ahead of the soft dorsal fin. The underside of the fish is pale; the flanks and dorsum are typically patterned, though the exact livery of the Thacba River material has not been extensively documented in accessible literature.
Habitat
The original description placed M. thacbaensis in the Thacba River, a freshwater system in northern Vietnam. As a spiny eel of the Asian Mastacembelus radiation, the fish is a freshwater, demersal species — FishBase records the valid species M. undulatus as freshwater, benthopelagic — favouring river and stream habitats with soft substrates into which it can burrow. The genus in Asia generally inhabits highland streams, lowland rivers and associated wetlands with vegetation, roots, and leaf litter providing daytime refuge.
Based on the habitat norms for the genus in Indochina and on the general conditions of subtropical and tropical Asian fresh waters, the species is likely adapted to warm temperatures (broadly 72–82 °F) and near-neutral pH (approximately 6.5–7.5), in soft to moderately hard fresh water. These figures derive from genus-level reference data rather than site-specific measurements from the Thacba River, and should be treated as working estimates only. Like all spiny eels, it is demersal and nocturnal, emerging after dark to search the substrate for prey.
Feeding
Mastacembelus thacbaensis is inferred to be a nocturnal benthic carnivore consistent with the feeding biology of the genus. Asian spiny eels use the fleshy, probing snout to search soft substrates and plant litter for insect larvae, worms, small crustaceans and other invertebrates. The downward-opening mouth is well suited to rooting through sediment and detritus rather than pursuing prey in open water.
No specific dietary observations from wild populations or captive individuals of M. thacbaensis are documented in available sources. What is known comes from the broader genus, which presents a consistent pattern of substrate-foraging carnivory across its Asian and African range. In aquarium contexts for related species, earthworms, bloodworm, and other meaty invertebrate foods are the standard diet, with individuals often reluctant to accept prepared foods, particularly when newly introduced.
Mating
No observations of mating behaviour for Mastacembelus thacbaensis are recorded in the accessible literature. The fish is not a true eel and does not undertake any marine or catadromous spawning migration; it breeds in fresh water. Spiny eels in the genus Mastacembelus are egg-scattering spawners with no lasting pair bond and no parental care, and mating in the genus is thought to be triggered by seasonal cues — rising water levels and warming temperatures associated with the monsoon or rainy season, which stimulate adults to move into marginal vegetation and spawn.
Courting pairs in related Mastacembelus species have been observed entwining among plants before scattering adhesive eggs, but field documentation from wild populations of any Asian spiny eel is sparse, and nothing species-specific for M. thacbaensis is available.
Breeding
Mastacembelus thacbaensis has not been bred in captivity under that name, and given its current taxonomic status as a junior synonym not recognised in the aquarium trade, there is no hobbyist account to draw on. For the broader genus and for M. undulatus-type spiny eels, breeding in the aquarium is rare. The fish scatter adhesive eggs among fine-leaved plants, roots, or leaf litter in fresh water, and the eggs are left entirely untended. There is no parental care of any kind — neither the eggs nor the larvae receive any guarding or tending by either parent.
Where captive spawnings have been achieved in related species, they have typically followed large water changes with slightly cooler, softer water simulating seasonal rains. The larvae hatch after a few days and require extremely fine first foods. The lack of captive-breeding success in the genus, combined with the taxonomic uncertainty surrounding this species, means that any fish encountered under the name M. thacbaensis would be wild-collected from Vietnamese fresh waters.
In the aquarium
Mastacembelus thacbaensis is not established in the aquarium trade and has no hobbyist profile as a kept species. Its valid congener M. undulatus similarly appears rarely if ever in commerce. For any collector or researcher who might encounter this fish, the husbandry requirements are those of the Asian Mastacembelus: a soft sand substrate deep enough for burrowing, caves and shaded retreats, excellent water quality, and a tight-fitting, fully sealed lid — spiny eels are notorious escape artists that can find and exploit the smallest gaps in a cover and will desiccate on the floor if given the opportunity.
The fish is scaleless and therefore sensitive to copper-based medications and to the organophosphate treatments sometimes used in community tanks; these must be avoided or used at reduced dose with extreme caution. A nocturnal predator, it should be fed meaty foods in the evening and housed with tankmates too large to be taken. Given the species' obscurity and the unresolved nomenclatural issues, it is unlikely to appear in trade, and wild collection for scientific purposes should be conducted with awareness of Vietnam's freshwater biodiversity commitments.
Conservation
Mastacembelus thacbaensis has no standalone IUCN Red List assessment; as a junior synonym, it is subsumed under M. undulatus, which was assessed as Data Deficient in 2020. The Data Deficient designation for M. undulatus reflects a genuine lack of information about population size, distribution trends and threats — not evidence of abundance. The original collection locality, the Thacba River in northern Vietnam, is a narrowly defined freshwater system, and any species with such a restricted type locality is inherently exposed to localised habitat degradation.
Vietnam's freshwater ecosystems face mounting pressure from dam construction, agricultural and industrial pollution, sand extraction and habitat conversion, all of which affect spiny eel populations that depend on intact riverine structure. The taxonomic uncertainty surrounding this name means that even if specimens of this fish are still present in the Thacba River, they are unlikely to be recognised or counted in any current assessment. A future revision of Vietnamese Mastacembelidae that properly establishes whether this taxon is validly distinct from M. undulatus would be the first step toward any targeted conservation evaluation.
