Neolissochilus hendersoni is a large cyprinid of the Malay Peninsula and southern Thailand, belonging to the Asian mahseer lineage that includes some of the most formidable river fishes in the Indo-Pacific. Like its congeners it inhabits fast, clear hill streams and larger rivers, feeding on invertebrates and organic matter rolled along the current. The species sits within a complex that has long confused ichthyologists: it is morphologically close to Neolissochilus soroides, and there is growing evidence that what has been called N. hendersoni may represent more than one undescribed lineage across its range.

Taxonomy & naming

Neolissochilus hendersoni was described by the American ichthyologist Albert William Herre, who worked extensively on Philippine and Malayan fishes in the early to mid twentieth century. The species was placed in the genus Neolissochilus, a group of large, robust Southeast Asian cyprinids collectively known as the Asian mahseers or tor-like barbs and now recognised as distinct from the old catch-all Tor.

The genus Neolissochilus is distributed across South and Southeast Asia, with centres of diversity in the Greater Sunda Islands, the Malay Peninsula, and the river systems draining the ranges of Indochina. Neolissochilus hendersoni is confined to the Malay Peninsula and southern Thailand. It has long been confused with its close relative N. soroides, and ichthyologists have noted that populations labelled N. hendersoni may not represent a single species — the complex likely includes undescribed taxa. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) records N. hendersoni as the valid name for the Malayan form.

Morphology

As a member of the Neolissochilus mahseer group, N. hendersoni is a large, robust, fusiform cyprinid built for life in swift current. The body is moderately compressed and somewhat elongate, with large scales, a subterminal or inferior mouth suited to picking food from the substrate and current, and well-developed pectoral fins. Mature individuals in related Neolissochilus species reach considerable sizes — often 12–19.5 in or more — and the largest mahseers in the genus are among the heaviest freshwater fishes of the region.

The colouration is typical of the group: silvery to brassy flanks, darker dorsally, with large reflective scales that catch the light of clear water. Fin colouration and any body markings vary among individuals and populations, and the morphological similarity to N. soroides means that definitive identification requires careful meristic analysis. Data on size specifically for N. hendersoni from the Malay Peninsula are sparse in the accessible literature.

Habitat

Neolissochilus hendersoni inhabits the rivers and hill streams of the Malay Peninsula and southern Thailand — fast-flowing, highly oxygenated, clear water systems draining the central mountain range. Neolissochilus mahseers are characteristically fishes of the riffles and runs: they favour clean, gravelly or rocky substrates with strong current, where dissolved oxygen is high year-round and water temperatures remain relatively cool for the tropics.

Water chemistry in these habitats is typically near-neutral and moderately soft, reflecting the granite and schist geology of the Malay highlands. Seasonal variation in flow, driven by monsoon rainfall, influences the distribution and activity of the fish — large individuals tend to move into smaller, quieter tributaries during high water and concentrate in pools and runs during the dry season. Lowland reaches of the same river systems, where water warms and slows, hold fewer Neolissochilus.

Feeding

Neolissochilus mahseers are generalised benthic omnivores in the wild, exploiting the rich invertebrate assemblages of fast hill streams — insect larvae (particularly chironomids, ephemeropterans and plecopterans), small crustaceans, molluscs, and aquatic worms — alongside algae, detritus, and fallen fruit that enters the current from the riparian forest.

The inferior or subterminal mouth is well suited to grubbing along the substrate and turning over coarse gravel. Larger individuals take a progressively higher proportion of plant matter and larger invertebrates. In the rivers of the Malay Peninsula, as in the broader mahseer group, these fishes are important nutrient cyclists, processing large volumes of organic material that accumulates in riffles and on stream margins.

Mating

Like all barbs and mahseers, Neolissochilus hendersoni is an egg-scattering, non-guarding spawner. There is no nest, no bubble-nest, no mouthbrooding, and no parental care of any kind. In the wild, large river mahseers are typically seasonal broadcast spawners whose reproductive activity is tied to hydrological cycles — rising water levels and associated environmental cues trigger upstream migrations in many related species, with spawning occurring over clean gravel beds in the upper river reaches.

Courting males pursue gravid females through the current, and eggs and milt are released together over the substrate. The adhesive or semi-adhesive eggs settle among gravel or are carried a short distance downstream before lodging. No pair bond is maintained after spawning, and adults do not remain near the egg deposition site.

Breeding

No captive-breeding records for Neolissochilus hendersoni are established in the accessible literature. As a large mahseer that reaches considerable size, it is not typically maintained in home aquaria, and propagation — where it has been attempted for other Neolissochilus species — requires large, purpose-built facilities with high flow rates and very good water quality.

In the wild, spawning is presumed to follow the pattern of related Neolissochilus and Tor mahseers: seasonal, tied to monsoon-driven rises in river level, with eggs broadcast over coarse gravel and no subsequent parental involvement. Fry and juveniles of the group are rheophilic from the earliest stages, requiring oxygenated, current-swept microhabitats to develop successfully. Given the taxonomic uncertainty around N. hendersoni and the difficulty of maintaining large rheophilic cyprinids in captivity, detailed breeding observations remain data sparse.

In the aquarium

Neolissochilus hendersoni is not an aquarium fish in the conventional sense. Its adult size — potentially exceeding 12–15.5 in as with congeners — and its requirement for strong, highly oxygenated current, cool-to-moderate temperatures, and large volumes of clean, near-neutral water place it well outside what the great majority of home aquarists can provide. Juvenile Neolissochilus occasionally appear in specialist trade, but the logistical and husbandry demands grow rapidly with the fish.

For those maintaining large, specialist systems or dedicated hill-stream display tanks, the requirements mirror those of other mahseers: high turnover filtration producing strong unidirectional flow, clean substrate, near-neutral moderately soft water, and a diet of varied invertebrate foods. Social behaviour in large cyprinids of this group is generally peaceful between conspecifics when space is adequate, though dominant individuals may monopolise feeding stations. The species' uncertain taxonomy and rarity in the trade mean that hobbyist experience with it specifically is minimal.

Conservation

No formal IUCN Red List assessment has been located for Neolissochilus hendersoni. Given the accelerating pressures on freshwater fish diversity in Southeast Asia, the absence of an assessment does not imply security — it reflects the pace at which documentation lags behind habitat change.

The rivers of the Malay Peninsula and southern Thailand face significant and ongoing anthropogenic pressure: damming for hydropower and water supply, sand extraction from riverbeds, agricultural pollution including run-off from oil palm cultivation, and over-collection of large food fish by both subsistence and commercial fishers. Mahseers across the region — including several Tor species and their Neolissochilus counterparts — have declined markedly in living memory across much of their range, and the taxonomic confusion surrounding N. hendersoni means that even baseline population data are difficult to establish. Any undescribed cryptic species within the complex would face identical threats with no protection of their own.
