Neolissochilus spinulosus, the spinulosus mahseer or Katley, is a cold-water cyprinid endemic to the hill streams and torrential rivers of Sikkim in northeast India. Described by John McClelland in 1845, it inhabits the fast-flowing, rocky-bottomed tributaries of the Teesta and Rangit river systems, where frigid, highly oxygenated water rushing off the Himalayan foothills defines the conditions in which it thrives. Its restricted range, dependence on pristine cold-water habitats, and poor documentation of its population status earned it a Data Deficient assessment on the IUCN Red List in 2022 — a reflection of how little is scientifically known about this species rather than a verdict on its security.

Taxonomy & naming

Neolissochilus spinulosus was described by the Scottish surgeon and naturalist John McClelland in 1845 from material collected in the eastern Himalayas, making it one of the earliest-described members of what is now the genus Neolissochilus. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) recognises the valid combination as Neolissochilus spinulosus McClelland, 1845.

The genus Neolissochilus belongs to the family Cyprinidae and encompasses a group of large, river-adapted barbs distributed across South and Southeast Asia, sometimes loosely grouped with the mahseers — the celebrated sport-fish of Himalayan and peninsular rivers — though Neolissochilus is distinct from the true mahseers of genus Tor. Many species in this broad Asian barb assemblage were historically assigned to Barbus or the old catch-all Puntius; subsequent phylogenetic work separated them into their current genera. Neolissochilus spinulosus has been recorded under the local Sikkimese name Katley, which applies broadly to Neolissochilus species dominating the cold torrential streams of the region.

The species epithet spinulosus derives from the Latin spinulosus, meaning "bearing small spines" or "slightly spiny", likely a reference to morphological features noted in the original description. Scientific coverage of this species remains sparse; it is poorly represented in the literature compared to economically important mahseers such as Tor putitora, and much of what is known comes from regional biodiversity surveys rather than targeted studies.

Morphology

Neolissochilus spinulosus is a member of the large-bodied barb and mahseer group, characterised by the robust, fusiform build suited to life in fast-flowing mountain rivers. Like other Neolissochilus, it would be expected to have a streamlined, torpedo-shaped body, large scales, and a subterminal or inferior mouth adapted for foraging along rocky substrates and in the water column of turbulent streams.

Detailed morphometric data for N. spinulosus are not well documented in the accessible literature. Regional surveys from Sikkim note that Neolissochilus species in the Teesta and Rangit drainages are among the dominant large cyprinids of the torrential zone, but species-specific size records for spinulosus specifically are sparse. Neolissochilus species are noted as dominant components of the fish fauna in Sikkim's torrential streams, favouring fast-flowing reaches with deep pools and rocky substrates. The habitat is essentially pristine Himalayan cold-water river — a biotope defined by cold temperatures, high dissolved oxygen, rocky or boulder-strewn bottoms, and strong current.

The species' highly restricted endemic range within a single Indian state makes it particularly vulnerable to any localised disturbance, including alteration of water flow, extraction, or thermal warming of its cold-water habitat.

Feeding

No specific dietary studies are available for Neolissochilus spinulosus in the accessible literature. Based on its placement in the Neolissochilus group and its cold, fast-flowing rocky river habitat, it is likely a generalist omnivore or benthic grazer, feeding on algae, biofilm, aquatic invertebrates, and organic matter scraped or picked from rocky substrates — a feeding mode typical of large barbs and mahseers occupying similar Himalayan river habitats.

The FAO documentation on cold-water fish of the Hindu Kush–Himalaya region notes that Neolissochilus species are part of the characteristic high-mountain Asian aquatic fauna, where food resources include diatoms, insect larvae (particularly Ephemeroptera, Plecoptera, and Trichoptera nymphs), small crustaceans, and drift invertebrates — the invertebrate-rich benthic community of unpolluted high-gradient streams. Seasonal variation in water temperature and discharge likely influences feeding intensity.

Mating

No direct observations of spawning behaviour in Neolissochilus spinulosus have been published in the accessible literature. As a member of the Cyprinidae, and consistent with the pattern across the barb and mahseer group, this species is expected to be an egg-scattering, non-guarding spawner. Large river barbs and Himalayan mahseers are typically broadcast spawners that undertake seasonal migrations upstream to spawn over gravel and rocky substrates, releasing eggs and milt into the current without constructing any nest or providing parental care.

Courtship in comparable large barbs involves males actively pursuing gravid females in open water or over gravel shallows. Spawning is triggered by seasonal cues — rising spring temperatures and increased discharge associated with snowmelt in Himalayan rivers — and large congregations of fish may gather at traditional spawning reaches. The eggs are dispersed by current and settle among river gravel, receiving no further attention from the adults.

Breeding

Neolissochilus spinulosus is an egg-scattering, non-guarding spawner. Like all members of the barb and mahseer family, it provides no parental care; eggs and fry are left entirely to their own fate after broadcast spawning. There is no nest construction, no guarding of eggs or larvae, and no mouthbrooding.

The species has not been bred in captivity in any documented context. Given its cold-water, high-altitude Himalayan ecology, the conditions required to induce spawning — cold temperatures, strong current, appropriate photoperiod and seasonal temperature cycling — would be difficult to replicate outside its native range. In the wild, breeding likely follows a seasonal pattern tied to the Himalayan snowmelt cycle, with spawning over clean gravel in fast-flowing reaches. Data on clutch size, egg development times, or larval ecology are not available for this species.

The lack of any captive-breeding record and the absence of this species from the ornamental fish trade means that husbandry and breeding protocols are entirely undocumented.

In the aquarium

Neolissochilus spinulosus is not found in the ornamental fish trade and is not kept in home aquaria. Its requirements — cold, highly oxygenated, fast-flowing water at temperatures that may drop close to 39 °F — are incompatible with standard tropical aquarium conditions and extremely difficult to replicate even in specialist cold-water setups.

The species is a large, active river fish endemic to a restricted highland range, and collection from the wild for the aquarium trade would be inappropriate given its Data Deficient conservation status and poorly understood population dynamics. It is a fish of interest to ichthyologists and conservation biologists rather than the aquarium hobby, and there is no established husbandry literature for it.

The Data Deficient designation reflects a genuine lack of information about the species' population size, trend, and ecology rather than a determination that it is secure. The assessors determined that insufficient data existed to assign a threat category.

The species is endemic to Sikkim, one of India's smallest states, and is known from the Teesta and Rangit river systems — a restricted range that places its entire global population within a geographically compact area. Himalayan river systems in northeast India face mounting pressures from hydropower development, including dams and run-of-river projects on the Teesta that alter flow regimes, sediment transport, and thermal patterns critical to cold-water fish. Agricultural runoff, sand and gravel mining, and increasing human settlement in valley bottoms also affect stream quality.

The Neolissochilus species of Sikkim are noted in regional biodiversity documentation as important components of the native freshwater fish fauna, carrying cultural significance under local names such as Katley. However, targeted population monitoring and ecological studies for N. spinulosus specifically are lacking.
