Pethia rutila is a small freshwater barb described in 2014 from the hill streams of Mizoram in Northeast India, where it inhabits the Karnaphuli River drainage — a system that straddles the border between northeastern India and Bangladesh. Reaching about 2 in in standard length, it is distinguished by a complete lateral line, a dark humeral blotch and a contrasting caudal-peduncle spot on a laterally compressed body. Like the wider genus Pethia, it is an egg-scattering, non-guarding spawner adapted to cool, well-oxygenated hill-stream conditions. It has not been formally assessed by the IUCN.

Taxonomy & naming

Pethia rutila was described by Lalramliana, Knight and Laltlanhlua in 2014 in the journal Zootaxa (volume 3827, issue 3, pages 366–374). The type locality is the Aivapui River and the Keisalam River, both tributaries within the Karnaphuli River drainage in Mizoram, Northeast India.

The genus Pethia was established by Pethiyagoda, Meegaskumbura and Maduwage in 2012 when a large-scale revision broke up the old, unwieldy catch-all genus Puntius, pulling South Asian species of similar body plan into several new genera. Pethia rutila was placed directly into Pethia at its description and has never carried the Puntius combination; the Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) records the valid name as Pethia rutila (Lalramliana, Knight & Laltlanhlua, 2014), with the parenthetical authority reflecting the original description in a genus that has since been treated as valid.

The species epithet rutila is Latin for reddish or glowing red, likely an allusion to the colouration of the living fish.

Morphology

Pethia rutila is a small, laterally compressed barb reaching a maximum recorded standard length of approximately 2 in. Diagnostic characters cited in the original description include a complete lateral line with 21–22 scales, a prominent dark humeral blotch (located above and behind the pectoral-fin insertion), and a contrasting dark blotch on the caudal peduncle.

The body shape follows the typical Pethia plan: moderately deep, short and compressed, with a blunt snout and a subterminal mouth suited to picking small food items from the substrate and the water column. FishBase classifies the species as benthopelagic, consistent with its life in the lower to mid water column over the gravel and sand of hill-stream beds.

Habitat

The species is known from the Aivapui and Keisalam rivers, tributaries of the Karnaphuli drainage, in Mizoram — a hilly, forested state in the far northeast of India. The Karnaphuli River rises in the Lushai Hills and flows westward and southward into Bangladesh before reaching the Bay of Bengal. The drainage supports a diverse hill-stream fish fauna.

Water chemistry data from the Karnaphuli system indicates a broadly neutral to slightly alkaline pH (around 6.4–7.8), consistent with the neutral pH of approximately 7 recorded at the type locality in the original description. The system is well-oxygenated and fast-flowing, with cooler temperatures typical of upland streams; the original description notes a temperature of roughly 72 °F and a hardness of approximately 20 dGH at the collection sites. These are clear, flowing waters rather than stagnant or heavily tannin-stained blackwater habitats.

Feeding

The original description records Pethia rutila as omnivorous, consistent with the feeding strategy of most small Pethia species. In natural hill-stream habitats, fish of this size and body shape typically graze on algal films, organic detritus, small invertebrates including insect larvae and micro-crustaceans, and other benthic matter.

In the aquarium, omnivorous barbs of similar size accept good-quality flake and micro-pellet foods without difficulty, and benefit from regular supplementation with small live or frozen items — bloodworm, daphnia, brine shrimp — and some plant or algae-based matter. The benthopelagic lifestyle suggests the species spends time feeding both at and near the bottom and in the lower-to-mid water column.

Mating

Like all barbs in the genus Pethia, P. rutila is an egg-scattering, non-guarding spawner. No nest is built, no territory is held beyond a brief courtship, and no parental care of any kind is provided. A gravid female is pursued by one or more males through vegetation or across the substrate, and eggs and milt are released together in short, pressing drives.

The adhesive eggs fall among fine-leaved plants, root tangles, submerged gravel or other bottom structure where they settle out of the current. Adults take no further interest in the spawn and will consume eggs if they encounter them. Colour intensity in males typically increases during the breeding season, and a hierarchy among competing males may be expressed through chasing and display.

Breeding

The original description notes that Pethia rutila spawns over submerged vegetation, confirming the typical Pethia egg-scattering mode. Eggs are adhesive and are deposited among plant material or on the substrate, after which the adults provide no further care.

No aquarium breeding account specific to P. rutila is established in the literature, but the approach used for similar hill-stream Pethia species — a cool, well-oxygenated spawning tank with slightly firm, neutral water, fine-leaved plants or a spawning mop, and a mesh bottom layer to protect the eggs from the adults — is the logical starting point. Data on clutch size, incubation time and fry development at type-locality temperatures are not yet published.

In the aquarium

Pethia rutila is a little-known species in the aquarium hobby and is not commonly available in the trade. Its habitat requirements point toward a cool, well-oxygenated aquarium with flowing, clear water, a neutral to slightly alkaline pH around 7, moderate hardness, and a temperature in the low twenties Celsius — conditions that reflect the upland hill-stream environment of the Karnaphuli drainage.

As a small, benthopelagic species it would suit a species tank or a community of similarly sized, non-aggressive hill-stream fishes. Being a schooling barb by nature, it should be kept in groups of at least six or more. The relatively firm, cool water requirements distinguish it from the warm-water, soft-water Indian barbs of the Western Ghats and set it closer to temperate hill-stream species from the northeastern subcontinent. Specific aquarium records are sparse given the species' recent description and limited trade presence.

Conservation

Pethia rutila has not been formally assessed by the IUCN Red List and carries a status of Not Evaluated (NE). Its known distribution is restricted to the Aivapui and Keisalam rivers within the Karnaphuli drainage in Mizoram, making it a geographically narrow endemic from a region where freshwater biodiversity is high but documentation is still growing.

The Karnaphuli drainage is subject to pressures typical of Northeast Indian hill-stream systems, including deforestation, changing land use, dam construction — the Kaptai Dam in Bangladesh was a major historical intervention in the lower Karnaphuli — and agricultural run-off affecting water quality. A species with a restricted range and apparent dependence on cool, clear, well-oxygenated flow may be sensitive to changes in catchment hydrology or water quality. Formal assessment against IUCN criteria would be a valuable step given the narrow type locality and the continuing development pressures in the Mizoram highlands.
