Taxonomy & naming
Pethia dikhuensis was described by Praveenraj, Limaakum, Knight, Moulitharan and Imchen in 2022, published in Zootaxa 5194(2): 283–295. The holotype (ZSI/APRC/V/P-1961, a male of 1.5 in SL) and ten paratypes (1.5–2 in SL) were collected on 15 January 2022 from the Dikhu River, Mokokchung district, Nagaland, at coordinates 26°20′08″N 94°23′20″E. No earlier genus combinations are recorded: the species was placed in Pethia at the time of its description and has always been treated under that name.
The genus Pethia itself is relatively young. It was established by Pethiyagoda, Meegaskumbura and Maduwage in 2012 as part of the major revision that dismantled the sprawling Old World Puntius complex, which had become a wastebasket taxon containing hundreds of unrelated cyprinids. Molecular analysis for P. dikhuensis placed it, via cox1 sequences, as closest to P. conchonius and P. sanjaymoluri, confirming its placement within Pethia. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) is the authority for the valid name.
The subfamily assignment in Cyprinidae is Smiliogastrinae, the grouping that contains most of the South Asian small barbs formerly lumped under Puntius. No common name has been established in the literature or trade for this species.
Morphology
Pethia dikhuensis is a small barb with a moderately deep, laterally compressed body — body depth fitting 2.7 to 3.0 times into standard length. The complete lateral line carries 21–24 pored scales, a feature that immediately distinguishes it from many congeners in which the lateral line is incomplete. Maximum recorded size is 2 in SL.
Coloration in life is sexually dichromatic. Males are reddish-green above the lateral line and reddish-orange below, with all fins reddish-orange; the dorsal fin is marked with a broad black submargin. There is a minute humeral spot on the third and fourth lateral-line scales and a conspicuous large elliptical black blotch covering the 16th through 19th lateral-line scales — the most striking and diagnostic marking of the species. Females are olive-green to silvery dorsally, without the intense red-orange suffusion of males.
At the type locality, the species co-occurred with Balitora sp., Amblyceps cerinum, Garra sp., Mustura sp. and Lepidocephalichthys sp. — an assemblage of rheophilic fishes typical of hill-stream habitats in the Eastern Himalayas region.
Habitat
The Dikhu River in Mokokchung district, Nagaland, northeast India, is the only known locality for Pethia dikhuensis. The collection site was a shallow hill stream — water depth recorded at approximately 2 ft — characterised by numerous boulders and rocks and the turbulent, well-oxygenated current typical of Eastern Himalayan hill-stream environments.
Regional water-chemistry data from hill streams in the Mokokchung district (Milak River catchment) provides useful context: water temperatures in the broader area range from approximately 53–77 °F across seasons; pH runs from about 6.8 to 8.4; dissolved oxygen is high at 6.2–9.73 mg/L; total alkalinity averages 55–65 mg/L. These figures are consistent with cool, clear, fast-moving montane headwaters with a moderate mineral load — not the soft, acidic lowland blackwater of peninsular India or Sri Lanka, but clean hill-stream water with moderate hardness.
Nagaland's river systems are noted as still poorly surveyed for fish diversity, with 216 species recorded across the state; P. dikhuensis exemplifies the cryptic, range-restricted endemics that continued fieldwork continues to reveal.
Feeding
No published diet study exists for Pethia dikhuensis. Based on its small size, body form, and the rheophilic hill-stream habitat it occupies — shallow, fast-moving water over rock and boulder substrate — it almost certainly forages in a manner consistent with other Pethia species: opportunistic benthic browsing on small invertebrates, algal films, and organic detritus scraped or picked from rock surfaces and the substrate.
The closely related P. conchonius (rosy barb) is a well-documented omnivore that takes insect larvae, worms, small crustaceans, algae and plant matter; P. dikhuensis almost certainly shares a similar trophic breadth given the overlapping ecological context. In an aquarium setting, Pethia species typically accept all standard foods without difficulty, including quality flake, micropellets, and small live or frozen invertebrates.
Mating
No direct observation of wild mating behaviour in Pethia dikhuensis is documented. As a member of the genus Pethia and the broader barb clade, it is expected to be an egg-scattering, non-guarding spawner — the universal reproductive mode of the group. Males in reproductive condition (reddish-orange coloration, broader fins) likely pursue gravid females through vegetation or over the rocky substrate, releasing eggs and milt briefly in contact before separating with no further investment.
No pair bond, territory, or nest of any kind is formed during spawning. In most Pethia species, colour and courtship intensity peak just before spawning; the scattered, adhesive eggs then become the immediate prey of the adults if the fish are not removed. The striking sexual dichromatism documented at the type locality — males considerably more colourful than females — is consistent with visual mate-choice signalling in barbs that spawn in clear, bright hill-stream water.
Breeding
No captive breeding record for Pethia dikhuensis has been published. Being a very recently described species only known from a single river in Nagaland, it has not entered the aquarium trade and has not been spawned in captivity as far as the literature records.
By analogy with the closely related P. conchonius and other well-studied Pethia species, a breeding setup would centre on an egg-scattering protocol: a shallow tank with cool, clean, moderately hard, well-oxygenated water reflecting the hill-stream origin; fine-leaved plants or a spawning mop; and a mesh or gravel layer to separate eggs from adults immediately after spawning. The adults should be removed promptly, as barbs give no parental care and readily consume their own eggs. Eggs and larvae development times would be expected to follow the pattern of other small Pethia at comparable temperatures — hatching within one to two days, free-swimming larvae a few days later.
In the aquarium
Pethia dikhuensis is not known to be kept in the aquarium hobby as of the date of writing. It was described in 2022 from a remote hill-stream locality in Nagaland, and there is no record of it having entered the trade or been maintained in captivity.
If the species were ever made available, its closest ecological analogue among kept barbs is likely P. conchonius (the rosy barb), which also prefers cool, clean, well-oxygenated water with moderate hardness and a broadly neutral pH, and which is an active, shoaling fish. By that analogy, P. dikhuensis would probably do best in a roomy, cool, well-filtered tank — temperatures perhaps in the range of 59–72 °F reflecting its hill-stream origin — kept in a social group, with open swimming space and some rocky structure. Given the very limited data on this species, any aquarium recommendations remain speculative.
Conservation
Pethia dikhuensis has not been formally assessed by the IUCN Red List. As a species described in 2022 and currently known only from its type locality on the Dikhu River, Mokokchung district, Nagaland, it has not had sufficient time or coverage for a formal evaluation, and its status is recorded as Not Evaluated (NE).
Its apparent extremely limited range — a single river locality in northeast India — raises immediate concern about natural vulnerability to local disturbance. The rivers of Nagaland face pressures common to many north-eastern Indian hill streams: siltation from agriculture and road construction, unregulated small-scale fishing, seasonal flooding variability, and developmental pressure on catchment forests. FishBase records low fishing vulnerability and high population resilience for the species, consistent with its small size and rapid generation time, but these metrics do not account for habitat specialisation or range restriction.
Further survey work is needed to establish whether the Dikhu River population is the species' true full range or whether it occurs more broadly in the Brahmaputra drainage system and adjacent hill-stream networks of Nagaland and neighbouring states.
