Pethia atra is a small, slender cyprinid described from the Iril River in the Imphal Valley of Manipur, northeastern India, where it inhabits sluggish streams, ponds and lakes within the Chindwin–Irrawaddy drainage. Reaching barely 2.5 in standard length, it is distinguished from its congeners by a prominent black longitudinal stripe running along the flank and a long, coiled intestine — traits that give the species both its name and an insight into its dietary biology. Known from only three locations and assessed as Vulnerable on the IUCN Red List, Pethia atra is among the more range-restricted members of a genus whose taxonomy was substantially reorganised following the landmark 2012 revision of South Asian barbs.

Taxonomy & naming

Pethia atra was formally described by Linthoingambi and Vishwanath in 2007, published in Zootaxa 1450 (pp. 45–56) as one of two new Puntius species from Manipur. The holotype (MUMF 6101, 2 in SL) was collected from the Iril River, the species' type locality. Prior to this description, specimens had apparently been reported under the name Puntius ticto from the Imphal River, and the original combination placed the fish in the old catch-all genus Puntius.

Following Pethiyagoda, Meegaskumbura and Maduwage's comprehensive 2012 synopsis of South Asian fishes referred to Puntius (Ichthyological Exploration of Freshwaters 23(1):69–95), the Catalog of Fishes transferred the species to Pethia — one of several segregate genera erected to resolve the polyphyletic old Puntius. The valid combination is therefore Pethia atra (Linthoingambi & Vishwanath, 2007), with parenthetical authority reflecting the genus change. The IUCN Red List references the species under the spelling atra, though some early documents use the masculine form ater; the correct epithet for the feminine genus Pethia is atra. The name Pethia khugae is treated as a synonym of this species in Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes.

Morphology

Pethia atra is a small barb reaching a maximum of 2.5 in standard length. Its most conspicuous feature is a bold black longitudinal stripe extending along the flank — the character that gives the species its name. FishBase records 32–33 vertebrae, an incomplete lateral line with 5–11 pored scales, and 25–29 lateral-line scales total.

The species possesses a notably long, coiled intestine with a gut length equivalent to approximately 2–2.5 times total body length, a ratio consistent with a partly herbivorous or detritivorous diet. This combination of an elongated gut and a distinctive flank stripe sets it apart from other Pethia in the region. Sexual dimorphism in colour or body shape has not been detailed in the primary literature, though as with other small barbs, females likely become more rotund when gravid.

Habitat

Pethia atra is endemic to the Imphal Valley in Manipur, northeastern India, where it occupies the Chindwin–Irrawaddy drainage. Its known occurrences are confined to the Iril River (type locality), the Imphal River, and associated ponds and lakes — a very limited area of occupancy estimated by the IUCN at an extent of occurrence of 11,000–12,0 mi². FishBase characterises the species as inhabiting sluggish streams within this valley system, alongside still and lentic habitats including seasonal and intermittent wetlands.

The Imphal Valley sits at roughly 2297–2625 ft elevation and its freshwater bodies are subject to seasonal fluctuations. The broader Chindwin basin connects ultimately to the Irrawaddy drainage of Myanmar. No detailed water chemistry parameters are recorded for this species' specific microhabitats, though the lowland, sluggish-stream and pond context suggests warmer, potentially more eutrophic conditions than the fast-running hill streams favoured by many other Indian barbs.

Feeding

The long, coiled intestine of Pethia atra — measuring some 2–2.5 times total body length — is the anatomical signature of a fish that processes fibrous plant material, detritus or algae rather than relying primarily on high-protein invertebrate prey. This gut morphology is common among barbs that graze on aufwuchs, submerged vegetation and organic sediments in lentic or sluggish habitats.

No detailed dietary study has been published for this species. By inference from gut morphology and its association with ponds, lakes and slow-moving streams, its diet likely includes algae, plant fragments, small invertebrates and detritus. In an aquarium setting, herbivore-leaning foods — blanched vegetables, spirulina-based flakes, algae wafers and small live or frozen invertebrates — would match its presumed natural diet.

Mating

Like all barbs, Pethia atra is presumed to be an egg-scattering, non-guarding spawner. No courtship or reproductive behaviour has been described in the literature for this species specifically, but the reproductive biology of the genus is consistent across its members: a driving male pursues a gravid female through aquatic vegetation or over the substrate, and eggs and milt are released together without pair bonding, nest construction or territorial holding.

Spawning triggers in the wild likely include seasonal water temperature changes and rainfall patterns associated with the monsoon cycle in Manipur. The fish's association with ponds, lake margins and sluggish streams suggests that spawning may take place among emergent or submerged macrophytes in shallow areas during the wet season, following the pattern typical of small South Asian barbs in comparable habitats.

Breeding

No captive breeding record for Pethia atra has been documented in the aquarium literature, reflecting both the species' rarity in the hobby and the limited published research on its biology. General principles for breeding small Pethia species apply: a separate shallow tank with soft to moderately hard, clean water, fine-leaved plants or a spawning mop, and a mesh or fine-gravel bottom that allows adhesive eggs to fall beyond the adults' reach.

Adults of this genus show no parental care and will eat their own eggs if given access; removal of adults following spawning is standard practice. Eggs of related Pethia species typically hatch within 24–48 hours at tropical temperatures, with larvae becoming free-swimming after a further 2–4 days. First foods would be infusoria or rotifers, transitioning to newly hatched brine shrimp as fry grow. Given the species' Vulnerable conservation status and restricted distribution, captive propagation would be of potential conservation value.

In the aquarium

Pethia atra is not an established aquarium fish and is essentially absent from the ornamental trade. Its restricted range in the Imphal Valley, combined with its Vulnerable status, means that specimens are unlikely to be encountered outside specialist or conservation-focused collections. No dedicated aquarium husbandry profile exists for the species.

By analogy with related small Pethia, it would presumably suit a modest, well-planted tank with gentle filtration and water parameters appropriate to its lowland, sluggish-stream habitat — moderately warm, near-neutral conditions rather than the cool, fast-running water preferred by hill-dwelling Indian barbs. Its long intestine suggests a diet with significant plant and detrital content. For hobbyists with access to the species, maintaining it in a species-specific setup and attempting captive breeding would be the most conservation-responsible approach.

Conservation

Pethia atra is assessed as Vulnerable (VU) under criteria B1ab(iii); D2 on the IUCN Red List (taxon ID 168453, assessment ID 176936021; assessed 23 February 2010, amended 2020). The assessment notes that the species is known from only three locations within the Imphal Valley, with an extent of occurrence of 11,000–12,0 mi² and an area of occupancy too small for the population to buffer against localised threats.

Identified threats include local artisanal fishing (the species has food use in Manipur), the introduction of non-native invasive fishes, eutrophication, and siltation of its wetland and stream habitats. The IUCN assessment flags that the species requires updated survey work and more research on its distribution and population biology. As an endemic of the Imphal Valley restricted to a handful of known sites, it is particularly vulnerable to any further degradation of Manipur's freshwater wetlands — a category of habitat under sustained pressure from agriculture, drainage and urbanisation across northeastern India.
