Pethia aurea is a diminutive barb from the deltaic ponds of southern West Bengal, India — a tiny, golden-hued fish barely reaching 1 in in standard length and described formally only in 2013. It inhabits still and slow-moving freshwaters of the Ganges River delta in the South 24 Parganas District, a low-lying, densely populated region where natural wetlands are under heavy pressure. Its specific epithet, from the Latin for golden, refers to the warm body colour that sets it apart from other small Pethia in the region. Though peaceful and manageable in the aquarium when kept in a proper shoal, it is not yet widely traded, and its long-term conservation status is unassessed.

Taxonomy & naming

Pethia aurea was described by Knight and Rema Devi in 2013, making it one of the more recently named members of the genus. The specific epithet aurea derives from the Latin aurea, meaning golden, a direct reference to the fish's coloration.

The genus Pethia was erected by Pethiyagoda, Meegaskumbura and Maduwage in 2012 to receive a cluster of small South Asian barbs formerly scattered across the paraphyletic assemblage known as Puntius. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) recognises Pethia as the valid genus, and the current valid combination is Pethia aurea (Knight & Rema Devi, 2013). Any older references to this species under Puntius or Barbus should be treated as historical synonyms. The species belongs to a diverse complex of small Indian barbs that includes P. ticto, P. phutunio, and numerous endemics of the Western Ghats and the Gangetic plain.

Morphology

Pethia aurea is a very small barb, recorded at up to approximately 1 in in standard length. Like other members of the genus it has a compact, laterally compressed body, a rounded snout, and a small, subterminal mouth suited to picking at fine food items. The coloration that gives the species its name is a warm golden to yellowish wash over the flanks.

Detailed morphological data in the open literature are sparse for this species. As is typical of the genus, females in breeding condition are likely to be visibly rounder in the belly, while males may display more intense pigment during courtship, but specific dimorphism records have not been widely published for this species.

Habitat

Pethia aurea is known from ponds and still or slow-moving freshwaters in the South 24 Parganas District of West Bengal, within the Ganges River delta of northern India. This is a low-elevation, deltaic environment characterised by networks of ponds, irrigation channels, and seasonally flooded wetlands.

FishBase records habitat parameters of around 75 °F, pH 7, and approximately 5 dGH hardness for this species. Seriously Fish cites a preferred range of 64–75 °F and pH 6.0–7.0 with hardness of 18–179 ppm (roughly 1–10 dGH). These figures describe a fish of warm to cool, soft to moderately hard, near-neutral freshwater — typical of the deltaic and riparian ponds of the Bengal lowlands.

Feeding

Pethia aurea is a micropredator in the wild, taking small insects, crustaceans, and zooplankton from the water column and substrate surface. This dietary profile is consistent with other small Pethia species that exploit the invertebrate fauna of still or gently flowing warm-water ponds.

In the aquarium it accepts dried foods including fine flakes and micro-pellets, but benefits from regular supplements of live and frozen fare such as daphnia, baby brine shrimp, micro-worms, and cyclops. A varied diet supports condition and natural colour expression in this small, active species.

Mating

Like all barbs, Pethia aurea is an egg-scattering, non-guarding spawner. There is no nest, no pair bond, and no parental investment beyond the act of spawning itself. A ready male pursues a gravid female through vegetation or over the substrate, pressing alongside her and releasing milt as she deposits adhesive eggs among fine-leaved plants or on the substrate.

Colouration and activity intensify in both sexes during courtship. Because Pethia aurea is a frequent spawner in well-maintained aquaria, the sight of males chasing females is a reliable indicator that the fish are in good condition. The adhesive eggs are small and fall where the spawning pair happens to be — no location is selected or defended.

Breeding

Pethia aurea spawns readily in a mature, well-planted aquarium and reportedly reproduces frequently once established. For deliberate breeding, a small, separate spawning tank with soft, slightly acidic to neutral water, fine-leaved plants or a spawning mop, and a substrate mesh or layer of marbles gives the eggs somewhere to fall beyond the adults' reach. A small group of well-conditioned fish is introduced and spawning typically follows within a day or two.

The adults must be removed after spawning as they will eat both eggs and newly hatched larvae. Eggs hatch in roughly 24–48 hours at 72–75 °F, and the fry become free-swimming shortly after. First foods are infusoria or commercial fry foods of suitable particle size, followed by newly hatched brine shrimp as the fish grow. The species' small adult size means fry are also very small at hatching and require appropriately fine foods.

In the aquarium

Pethia aurea is a peaceful, timid schooling fish that must be kept in groups of eight to ten or more to behave naturally and remain unafraid. In smaller numbers it becomes stressed and retiring, spending most of its time hiding. Its tiny size makes it best suited to nano or species-only tanks, or to quiet community set-ups with similarly small, gentle tankmates such as Microdevario, Trigonostigma, smaller Danio species, Lepidocephalichthys loaches, and dwarf freshwater shrimp.

The aquarium should provide dense planting, soft substrate, and subdued lighting to replicate the sheltered, vegetated ponds of its native range. Water conditions of 64–75 °F, pH 6.0–7.0, and low to moderate hardness suit the species well. It is not yet widely traded and may require sourcing from specialist importers or hobbyist breeders. Its gentle temperament and small footprint make it an appealing subject for the dedicated nano-tank keeper.

Conservation

Pethia aurea has not been formally assessed by the IUCN Red List and is treated as Not Evaluated (NE). FishBase similarly carries no IUCN status for the species. This reflects how recently it was described rather than any inference about its security.

The species is known from the South 24 Parganas District, a heavily populated region of the Ganges delta where freshwater habitats face ongoing pressure from agricultural drainage, water extraction, pollution from urban and industrial sources, and the modification of natural ponds for aquaculture. Small-bodied barbs with restricted distributions in such areas can be vulnerable to local extirpation even before a formal assessment is conducted. A targeted survey of its distribution and abundance would be a useful first step toward understanding its conservation needs.
