Pethia bandula, the Bandula barb, is one of the rarest freshwater fishes on Earth — a tiny, reddish-gold cyprinid endemic to a single stream on the island of Sri Lanka, known from a stretch of water no more than a few kilometres long near the village of Galapitamada in Sabaragamuwa Province. Described in 1991 as Puntius bandula and transferred to the resurrected genus Pethia after the landmark 2012 revision of Old World barbs, it has been listed as Critically Endangered since 1996 and at one point was estimated at just 150 wild adults, squeezed into a narrow corridor of paddy fields and rubber estate drainage that carries heavy agrochemical loads. The story of this fish is also, unusually, a story of conservation working: targeted habitat protection, community engagement, and a successful 2012 translocation have rebuilt the type-locality population and established a second colony, offering a rare counterpoint to the grim arithmetic of tropical fish extinctions.

Taxonomy & naming

Pethia bandula was originally described as Puntius bandula by Kottelat and Pethiyagoda in 1991 from the stream at Galapitamada in the Sabaragamuwa Province of Sri Lanka. The species was named in honour of Bandula Wijeyaratne, a Sri Lankan naturalist who first brought this remarkable fish to scientific attention. The original authority parenthetical — (Kottelat & Pethiyagoda, 1991) — reflects the subsequent transfer out of the original genus.

The genus Pethia was erected by Pethiyagoda, Meegaskumbura & Maduwage in 2012 as part of a thoroughgoing revision that dismembered the sprawling, paraphyletic Old World genus Puntius into several more precisely defined genera. Under that revision, the small, primarily South and Southeast Asian barbs with a soft dorsal fin lacking a serrated spine were assigned to Pethia. The valid name accepted by the Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) is Pethia bandula (Kottelat & Pethiyagoda, 1991).

Morphology

Pethia bandula is a small barb, reaching a maximum recorded standard length of about 1.5 in. The body is moderately deep and laterally compressed in the typical Pethia manner. The ground colour is described as reddish-gold to golden-bronze, with the flanks catching light in a way that gave rise to the common name. As in other members of the genus, the dorsal fin is soft-rayed without a hardened, serrated last unbranched ray — a key morphological character separating Pethia from related genera such as Puntius.

Beyond the published size record from FishBase and the general colouration noted in hobbyist and conservation literature, detailed meristic and colour-pattern data for this species are not extensively published in sources accessible through the research cache. The fish's obscurity, restricted range, and Critically Endangered status have meant that relatively little morphological work has been done compared with more abundant Sri Lankan congeners.

Habitat

The type locality and, until 2012, the only known locality for this species is a small, unnamed stream at Minimaru Coloniya near Galapitamada in Pallegama Estate, Sabaragamuwa Province, Sri Lanka. The stream is shallow — fish were recorded predominantly in water less than 8 in deep — and flows over a rocky substrate through a heavily anthropogenic landscape of paddy fields, rubber plantations and home gardens. Adults were found sheltering under leaf litter and among the roots and stems of emersed marginal vegetation along the stream margins.

A successful 2012 translocation of 20 adults to a site near Wilikulakanda Forest Reserve established a second population within a more protected catchment. Surveys of Sri Lankan headwater streams more broadly indicate that Pethia species favour clear, well-oxygenated water of near-neutral to slightly acidic pH — conditions that deteriorate sharply where rice cultivation and rubber estate drainage introduce agrochemicals and silt. The water-quality parameters specific to the Galapitamada stream have been assessed in the context of conservation monitoring but are not comprehensively published in the sources consulted here.

Feeding

Like its congeners, Pethia bandula is presumed to be an opportunistic omnivore, foraging among leaf litter, marginal vegetation and the stream substrate for small invertebrates, algae, diatoms and organic detritus. The shallow, well-vegetated margins where the species shelters are consistent with a foraging lifestyle centred on picking invertebrates from submerged plant matter and soft sediment.

No specific dietary studies have been conducted on this species given its extreme rarity and the logistical difficulty of non-destructive sampling at the type locality. In managed conservation populations and the small numbers that have entered the aquarium trade, the fish readily accepts fine flake food, small live foods such as newly hatched brine shrimp and micro-worms, and crushed frozen bloodworm — a broad omnivore diet typical for the genus.

Mating

Pethia bandula is an egg-scattering, non-guarding spawner in the manner typical of all barbs. No pair bond is formed, and no territory is maintained beyond fleeting courtship interactions. When conditions are favourable — typically stable temperatures, good water quality and ample food — a ripe male pursues a gravid female through the marginal vegetation or over the sandy and gravelly substrate, the two fish pressing together briefly as eggs and milt are released simultaneously.

The eggs are adhesive and fall among plant stems, root tangles, leaf debris or onto the bottom. The adults pay no further attention to the spawn and, if not separated, will consume any eggs they encounter. Observations of courtship in this species in the wild are extremely limited given its rarity; accounts in conservation literature describe the species as a typical barb spawner consistent with the egg-scattering reproductive guild.

Breeding

The Wickremasinghe et al. (2021) study documenting population recovery at the Galapitamada site confirms that Pethia bandula reproduces reliably under the habitat conditions prevailing at that stream, with the type-locality population growing from approximately 100 individuals in 2003 to around 1,389 by 2014 following habitat protection and community stewardship. The 2012 translocation of 20 adults to the Wilikulakanda site produced a stable population of approximately 217 fish within three years — evidence of successful reproduction in a second habitat.

In the aquarium, a small number of dedicated keepers and conservation-oriented facilities maintain Pethia bandula. The breeding approach follows standard small-barb protocol: a shallow, fine-leaved planted tank with soft, slightly acidic water and a substrate mesh or layer of marbles to protect eggs from the adults. A well-conditioned trio or small group is introduced; spawning follows during morning hours with the adults removed thereafter. Eggs are adhesive and hatch in approximately one to two days at tropical room temperatures; fry are fed infusoria and then micro-foods as they grow. Fecundity data for this species specifically are not published in detail.

In the aquarium

Pethia bandula is not a common aquarium fish and is rarely available in the trade outside specialist conservation circles and hobbyist groups focused on Sri Lankan endemic species. Its extreme rarity in the wild — and the fact that collection pressure from the ornamental trade was identified as one of the primary drivers of its 90% population decline over the 20 years prior to 2021 — means that wild-caught specimens should not be acquired, and captive-bred stock from verified sources is the only acceptable route for hobbyists.

In terms of care, it is a small barb suited to a species tank or a quiet community with other small, non-competitive fishes. Given its stream habitat at Galapitamada — shallow, well-oxygenated water, rocky and leaf-littered substrate, marginal vegetation — a well-filtered tank with gentle but consistent flow, a temperature in the low-to-mid twenties Celsius, near-neutral to slightly acidic pH, and generous plant cover would be appropriate. As a point endemic, Pethia bandula is perhaps better considered a conservation responsibility than a display fish; those who keep it are encouraged to maintain breeding records and connect with Sri Lankan freshwater conservation initiatives.

Conservation

Pethia bandula is assessed as Critically Endangered (CR) on the IUCN Red List, an assessment that has been maintained since the species was first evaluated in 1996. The primary threats documented in the literature are habitat destruction and degradation through agricultural expansion (paddy fields and rubber estate runoff carrying agrochemicals), along with direct collection for the ornamental trade. An estimated 90% decline in population over a 20-year window was documented in Wickremasinghe et al. (2021), with a 2007 estimate placing the entire wild population at approximately 150 adults — an extraordinary rarity even by the standards of Sri Lanka's highly threatened freshwater fish fauna.

The conservation trajectory for this species is, however, more hopeful than the headline numbers suggest. Concerted habitat protection at the type locality near Galapitamada, combined with community involvement and a formal management programme, allowed the population there to recover to approximately 1,389 individuals by 2014. A 2001 translocation attempt failed, but a second attempt in 2012 — moving 20 adults to a site near the Wilikulakanda Forest Reserve — established a stable breeding population of around 217 fish within three years. These outcomes demonstrate that targeted in-situ protection and carefully planned ex-situ translocation can recover point-endemic stream fishes when implemented promptly and with sustained community support.
