Pethia chakpiensis is a small cyprinid barb described in 2023 from the Chakpi River in Manipur, north-eastern India, a tributary system of the Chindwin-Irrawaddy drainage. Known from a handful of specimens collected in cool, fast-flowing hill-stream habitat, the species is distinguished from its congeners by a combination of a reduced, incompletely pored lateral line, a caudal-peduncle spot, and the absence of a humeral spot. Like other members of the genus Pethia, it is a compact, laterally compressed barb adapted to clear, well-oxygenated upland waters. Described from a remote river valley in the Chandel district near the India-Myanmar border, P. chakpiensis represents the ongoing discovery of barb diversity in the poorly surveyed river systems of the Indo-Myanmar biodiversity hotspot.

Taxonomy & naming

Pethia chakpiensis was described by Sherpa, Sinha, Dubey and Sinha in 2023 in the Journal of Ichthyology (volume 63, pages 14–21), based on specimens collected from the Chakpi River, Chandel district, Manipur, India — a tributary of the Chindwin-Irrawaddy drainage system. FishBase records an alternative attribution, Shangningam and Kosygin 2023, reflecting apparent overlap in publication timing; the Catalog of Fishes is the governing authority for the valid name, which remains Pethia chakpiensis.

The genus Pethia was established by Pethiyagoda, Meegaskumbura and Maduwage in 2012 to accommodate a group of small South Asian barbs previously scattered under the old, polyphyletic catch-all genus Puntius. Pethia species are characterised by a combination of free orbital rim, presence of a last simple dorsal-fin ray that is ossified and serrated, and the absence of a rostral cap and maxillary barbels. P. chakpiensis is diagnosed within the genus by its combination of an incomplete lateral line bearing only 4–7 pored scales, 21–24 scales in the lateral series, 15 preanal scales, the lack of a humeral blotch, and the presence of a caudal-peduncle spot.

Morphology

Pethia chakpiensis is a small barb, reaching a maximum recorded standard length of 1.5 in. The body is laterally compressed and moderately deep, consistent with the general Pethia body plan. The lateral line is incomplete, with only 4–7 pored scales out of a total lateral series of 21–24 scales — a departure from the fully pored lateral lines of many congeners and one of the key diagnostic characters separating this species from related taxa.

A dark spot is present on the caudal peduncle, while the humeral region lacks the blotch seen in some other Pethia species. The species has 15 preanal scales. Full colouration details from life are not extensively documented in available sources, though the overall form is that of a typical small barb of the hill-stream guild, likely with a pale to silvery or lightly marked body. Sexual dimorphism has not been formally described for this species in available literature, though in Pethia generally females tend to be more robust and rounder when gravid.

Habitat

The type locality is the Chakpi River, a hill stream in the Chandel district of Manipur, north-eastern India, draining into the Chindwin-Irrawaddy river system. The Chakpi River flows through a tropical highland landscape and includes both fast- and slow-flowing sections. Water chemistry data from the river indicate a pH of approximately 7.5 and temperature around 72 °F, consistent with a cool, well-oxygenated upland stream; recorded hardness is in the soft-to-moderate range at approximately 120 ppm.

This habitat profile — clear, cool, near-neutral water with good current — is typical of hill-stream barbs in the Indo-Myanmar region. The Chandel district lies in a biogeographically significant zone near the Myanmar border, where the river drainages carry a mix of species with affinities to both the broader Chindwin-Irrawaddy system and the distinct hill-stream faunas of the Manipur uplands. The species has not been reported outside the Chakpi River system.

Feeding

No specific dietary data have been published for Pethia chakpiensis. Based on the ecology of the genus and the habitat from which this species was described, it is reasonable to infer that it feeds opportunistically on the small invertebrates, algae, and organic detritus typical of shallow hill-stream environments — including chironomid larvae, small crustaceans, and aufwuchs scraped from rocky or sandy substrates.

Small hill-stream barbs of the genus Pethia are generally considered omnivores, foraging actively in the water column and along the substrate. In the aquarium, related Pethia species accept a broad range of small prepared foods, live and frozen invertebrates, and vegetable matter, and P. chakpiensis would likely respond similarly if kept in captivity.

Mating

No specific breeding observations have been published for Pethia chakpiensis. As with all barbs in the family Cyprinidae, the species is expected to be an egg-scattering, non-guarding spawner. In the genus Pethia, courtship typically involves a male driving a gravid female through vegetation or over the substrate, with eggs and milt released simultaneously in brief contact spawning bouts.

No pair bond is formed beyond the spawning act, and neither parent guards territory or offspring. Spawning in hill-stream barbs is often correlated with seasonal cues — temperature fluctuations and rising water levels associated with the monsoon are common triggers in Manipur and the surrounding region. Adults are not known to show any form of parental care.

Breeding

Pethia chakpiensis has not been reported in the aquarium trade or bred in captivity as of its description. Breeding biology is inferred from the general Pethia pattern: eggs are adhesive and scattered among fine-leaved vegetation, root tangles, or over gravel and rocky substrate; the adults take no further interest in the eggs or larvae and will consume both if given the opportunity.

If the species were maintained in captivity, a breeding approach similar to that used for other small Pethia — cool, well-oxygenated water around 68–72 °F, neutral pH, and the provision of fine-leaved plants or spawning mops — would be a reasonable starting point. Eggs would be expected to hatch within one to two days at these temperatures, with free-swimming fry emerging a few days later requiring infusoria-sized foods initially.

In the aquarium

Pethia chakpiensis is not currently available in the aquarium trade and is known only from its type locality. As a recently described species from a remote hill-stream system in Manipur, it has not entered hobbyist collections. Should it become available, its small adult size (to 1.5 in SL) and hill-stream origins would suggest a tank with clean, well-filtered, oxygen-rich water at cool temperatures around 68–72 °F and a near-neutral pH, reflecting its natural habitat in the Chakpi River.

Like most Pethia, it would be expected to fare best in a small shoal in a tank with other peaceful, similarly sized fish, subdued lighting, fine-grained substrate, and good water movement to simulate the flowing hill-stream conditions of its native river. Related Pethia species in the hobby are generally straightforward to keep when their water-quality requirements are met.

Conservation

Pethia chakpiensis has not been evaluated by the IUCN Red List; the species was described in 2023 and no formal conservation assessment has been conducted to date. Its known range is restricted to the Chakpi River in the Chandel district of Manipur — a single river system — which makes it inherently vulnerable to localised threats even in the absence of formal threatened status.

The broader Chindwin-Irrawaddy drainage in Manipur is subject to pressures common across the Indo-Myanmar biodiversity hotspot: habitat degradation from agriculture and settlement, water extraction, and the impacts of seasonal flooding altered by land-use change in the watershed. The Chandel district's proximity to the international border with Myanmar also means that biodiversity survey coverage is limited. Further fieldwork is needed to establish the full extent of the species' range, population status, and the threats it faces before a meaningful conservation assessment can be made.
