Taxonomy & naming
Pethia cumingii was described by the British ichthyologist Albert Günther in 1868, originally placed in the genus Barbus as Barbus cumingii — the standard large barb bin of the era — and later transferred to the broadly defined Puntius, which served as a holding genus for hundreds of South and Southeast Asian barbs well into the twentieth century. The valid combination became Puntius cumingii (Günther, 1868) in that literature, and the name still appears under that combination in older aquarium books and trade catalogues.
The overhaul of the Puntius complex by Pethiyagoda et al. (2012) and subsequent molecular work broke the old catch-all genus into several natural groups. Sri Lankan species allied to the type species of Pethia were reassigned to the genus Pethia, making the current valid name Pethia cumingii (Günther, 1868), with the parenthetical authority marking the original description in a different genus. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) is the governing authority for this placement.
Molecular phylogeographic work on Sri Lankan Pethia has documented the population structure of P. cumingii across the south-western wet zone and confirmed an introduced population near Ginigathena in the Mahaweli basin (6.987°N, 80.499°E), outside the species' native drainages, likely originating from escapes at the Peradeniya botanical gardens.
Morphology
The two-spot barb reaches approximately 2 in in standard length — a modest size that, combined with its vivid colouration, has made it a popular aquarium species. The body is moderately deep and laterally compressed, typical of the genus, with a somewhat pointed snout and a small terminal mouth suited to picking at fine food items from the substrate and water column.
The most striking feature is the colour pattern: a ground of silvery to golden-yellow, overlaid with two conspicuous dark blotches — one positioned beneath the dorsal fin origin and one on the caudal peduncle just ahead of the tail. The fins are characteristically vivid, ranging from orange through bright crimson-red; this coloration is most intense in males in breeding condition. Females are generally fuller-bodied when gravid and may show slightly less saturated fin colour than males, though dimorphism is subtle outside the breeding season.
Habitat
Pethia cumingii is endemic to the south-western wet zone of Sri Lanka, with its native range spanning the lowland river systems from the Kelani basin south to the Gin basin. This is a region of high rainfall supporting dense tropical vegetation, and the species inhabits slow-flowing to near-stagnant marsh waters, swampy stream margins and flooded areas with mud or silt substrates and abundant aquatic macrophytes.
FishBase records water parameters of 72–81 °F, pH 5.5–6.5, and hardness of 0–15 dGH — reflecting the soft, mildly acidic, blackwater-influenced conditions typical of Sri Lanka's lowland wet-zone wetlands. The species is benthopelagic and forms medium-sized shoals, staying relatively close to the substrate and among vegetation. It is associated with seasonally flooded environments where water levels and temperature fluctuate with the monsoon cycle, and it spawns during the rainy season.
An introduced population has been recorded in the Mahaweli basin near Peradeniya Gardens, presumed to originate from ornamental fish kept at the Royal Botanic Gardens and subsequently released or escaped into watercourses that flow into the upper Mahaweli — a drainage outside the species' native range.
Feeding
In the wild Pethia cumingii feeds on green algae, planktonic organisms and detritus, grazed from the substrate and filtered from the water column in the vegetated, food-rich margins of marshy habitats. The breadth of this diet reflects the generalist foraging strategy common to many small barbs inhabiting eutrophic lowland waters, where seasonal flooding brings in abundant organic matter.
In the aquarium the species is straightforward to feed and accepts most standard aquarium foods: quality flake and small granules, supplemented with live and frozen items such as daphnia, micro-worms and brine shrimp nauplii. Inclusion of some vegetable matter — spirulina-based flake or blanched greens — reflects its algae-grazing habit in the wild and helps maintain condition and colour. The species feeds throughout the day and is not aggressive at mealtimes, making it compatible with slower or more delicate tankmates from a feeding standpoint.
Mating
Like all barbs, Pethia cumingii is an egg-scattering, non-guarding spawner. Spawning is triggered by seasonal cues in the wild — particularly the arrival of the south-west monsoon rains, which bring cooler, fresh water into the low-lying wetlands the species inhabits — and can be induced in aquaria by temperature changes, water changes with soft, slightly cooler water, and conditioning on live foods.
Courtship follows the standard barb pattern: a ripe male intensifies in colour and pursues a gravid female through vegetation or over the silty substrate, driving her persistently until the two press together and simultaneously release eggs and milt. There is no pair bond, no territory held for more than moments, and no nest of any kind. Multiple males may court a single female, and the fish may spawn in small loose aggregations rather than strictly in pairs. The eggs are adhesive and sink into vegetation or onto the substrate after release.
Breeding
Pethia cumingii has been bred in aquaria, though it is somewhat less routinely produced in captivity than hardier barb species. A separate, shallow spawning tank with very soft, slightly acidic water (mirroring the wet-zone marsh conditions of the native range), fine-leaved plants or a spawning mop, and a substrate layer that allows eggs to fall out of adults' reach is the standard approach. A well-conditioned group with several males chasing a gravid female typically produces spawning activity in the morning hours.
The eggs are adhesive and scattered among plants or onto the bottom. Adults must be removed promptly after spawning, as they will eat their own eggs given the opportunity — there is no parental care of any kind. Eggs hatch in approximately 24–36 hours at suitable temperatures. The larvae are initially photosensitive and hang passively; they become free-swimming after a few additional days and can then be fed infusoria, green water or commercial fry foods of fine particle size, followed by newly hatched brine shrimp as they grow. The species' relatively restricted range and Endangered status have increased interest among specialist hobbyists in maintaining captive-bred lines.
In the aquarium
Pethia cumingii is an attractive and peaceful aquarium fish that shows best in a planted tank with soft, slightly acidic water reflecting its native Sri Lankan marsh conditions: temperature in the 72–81 °F range, pH around 5.5–6.5, and low hardness. Good filtration with gentle flow and ample planting with fine-leaved species suits this marsh-dweller, which in the wild inhabits slow, heavily vegetated waters rather than fast-flowing streams.
It is a social species and should be kept in groups of at least six; a proper shoal reduces stress, encourages natural behaviour and brings out the males' best fin colouration. It is peaceful enough for a community aquarium of similarly sized, non-boisterous fishes and is compatible with other small Sri Lankan endemics. Because it is an Endangered species with a restricted wild range, sourcing captive-bred specimens rather than wild-caught fish is strongly advisable — wild collection pressure adds to the already significant threats the species faces in its native wetlands.
Conservation
Pethia cumingii is assessed as Endangered (EN) on the IUCN Red List under criteria B1ab(iii,v)+2ab(iii,v), with the assessment completed in May 2020. The criteria reflect both a small total extent of occurrence and area of occupancy, and continuing decline in the extent and quality of habitat and in the number of mature individuals — a combination that places the species under serious threat.
The species is endemic to the south-western wet zone of Sri Lanka, one of the world's biodiversity hotspots but also a heavily populated and economically developed region. The primary drivers of decline are the drainage, filling and degradation of lowland wetlands and marshes for agriculture, urban expansion and aquaculture; siltation and pollution of remaining watercourses; and extraction of water from the small river basins within the species' range. Sri Lanka's lowland freshwater fish fauna is among the most threatened in Asia, and P. cumingii — confined to a geographically small, hydrologically fragile set of basins — is one of several endemics in a precarious position. Maintaining captive populations and reducing collection of wild fish are important conservation measures given the continued deterioration of its wetland habitats.
