Taxonomy & naming
Pethia expletiforis was described in 2013 by Mayanglambam Dishma and W. Vishwanath of Manipur University, published in Zootaxa 3736(1): 82–88 (11 November 2013). The type locality is the Ka-ao River, Kaladan drainage, Mizoram, northeastern India. The authority appears as Dishma & Vishwanath, 2013; where parenthetical notation is used in some sources, this reflects the species' movement out of the original genus combination, which was placed in Pethia from the outset.
The genus Pethia was established by Pethiyagoda, Meegaskumbura & Maduwage (2012) to receive a substantial block of South Asian barbs previously lumped under Puntius — a genus shown to be massively polyphyletic following modern phylogenetic work. Pethia expletiforis belongs to the northeast Indian radiation of the genus, alongside close relatives such as Pethia rutila and P. chakpiensis, which are similarly endemic to the rivers of Mizoram and neighbouring Manipur. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) is the authority for the current valid name and placement.
Morphology
Pethia expletiforis is a small barb reaching approximately 2 in in standard length. The original description distinguishes it from congeners by a combination of meristic and colour characters: a complete lateral line bearing 21–22 pored scales, 9 predorsal scales, 12 circumpeduncular scales, and a transverse row count of ½4/1/3½. A prominent black blotch marks the caudal peduncle, a character that aids field identification.
Critically, the species lacks both a humeral blotch — the dark shoulder spot that features in many other Pethia — and maxillary barbels. The absence of barbels is shared with several closely related northeastern Indian Pethia and distinguishes the group from barbs that retain rudimentary or well-developed barbels. Body form is the slender, moderately compressed shape typical of stream-dwelling Pethia.
Habitat
The species is known from the Ka-ao River, a tributary within the Kaladan River system, in Mizoram, northeastern India. The Kaladan drains south and southwest into Myanmar and ultimately the Bay of Bengal, cutting through hilly, forested terrain. Stream habitats in this part of Mizoram are typically clear, fast-flowing, and well-oxygenated, with rocky or gravel substrates under closed-canopy forest cover.
FishBase classifies the species as tropical and benthopelagic — bottom-associated but active in the water column — consistent with the rheophilic tendencies of most small Pethia from hill drainages. No detailed field temperature or chemistry data for the Ka-ao River have been published, but hill streams in the Kaladan catchment at these elevations in Mizoram are likely cool-to-warm and near-neutral to slightly acidic, with low to moderate hardness. The species is endemic to this single drainage and has not been recorded elsewhere.
Feeding
No specific dietary study has been published for Pethia expletiforis. Like other small stream-dwelling Pethia from similar environments in northeastern India, it is presumed to be an opportunistic omnivore, foraging along the benthos and in the water column for small invertebrates — insect larvae, microcrustaceans, worms — as well as algae, fine plant material, and organic detritus.
This foraging mode is consistent with the species' benthopelagic classification and its habitat in clear, rocky hill streams where benthic invertebrate production is the dominant food base. In aquarium conditions, Pethia from comparable habitats typically accept high-quality flake and micro-pellet foods readily, supplemented with live or frozen invertebrates.
Mating
Pethia expletiforis is an egg-scattering, non-guarding spawner, as is characteristic of all barbs. No formal breeding study has been published for this species, but the reproductive biology of the genus is well established: when in spawning condition, a male actively pursues a gravid female through vegetation, root tangles, or over the substrate, and the pair release eggs and milt together in brief, repeated bouts.
There is no pair bond, no territory maintained beyond the moment of spawning, and no nest of any kind. Eggs are adhesive and drift downward to settle among plant matter or substrate interstices. The adults take no further interest in the eggs and, given the opportunity, will consume them.
Breeding
No captive breeding records for Pethia expletiforis are in the published literature, and the species is not established in the ornamental trade. Based on the biology of closely related northeastern Indian Pethia, captive spawning would be approached in the same manner as for small rheophilic barbs generally: a shallow, well-filtered tank with soft-to-moderate, slightly acidic water, fine-leaved plants or a spawning mop, and a mesh or gravel layer to protect scattered eggs from the adults.
A well-conditioned pair would be introduced to the spawning setup; eggs would be expected to hatch within 24–48 hours, with free-swimming fry appearing a few days thereafter. Adults scatter adhesive eggs and provide no parental care whatsoever; they should be removed promptly after spawning. Fry would require infusoria and then newly hatched brine shrimp as first foods.
In the aquarium
Pethia expletiforis is essentially unknown in the aquarium hobby. The species has not entered commercial trade, and no husbandry accounts exist in the hobbyist literature. Its endemism to a single river system in remote Mizoram means that collection for the ornamental trade is currently negligible, and captive-bred stock is non-existent.
Should it become available, care parameters would follow those of other small, rheophilic Pethia from northeastern India — cool to moderate water temperatures, good flow and oxygenation, near-neutral to slightly acidic pH, and low to moderate hardness. A spacious tank with rocky decor and planting, kept in a shoal of at least six, would suit the species. Its small size (under 2 in SL) and likely active temperament would make it compatible with similarly sized, peaceful stream-dwelling species.
Conservation
Pethia expletiforis has not been formally assessed by the IUCN Red List and carries a status of Not Evaluated (NE). This is notable given that the species is a strict endemic, known only from the Ka-ao River in the Kaladan drainage of Mizoram — a single river system within a geographically restricted range. Such narrow endemism would typically warrant at least a Data Deficient or Vulnerable assessment under IUCN criteria.
Northeastern India's freshwater biodiversity hotspot faces mounting pressure from habitat alteration: deforestation on valley slopes, agricultural encroachment, unregulated small-scale damming, and seasonal water extraction all affect the hill-stream habitats on which endemic species like P. expletiforis depend. Inventories of endemic Indian freshwater fishes consistently flag this region's micro-endemics as underevaluated conservation priorities. Without a formal IUCN assessment, the species' actual population status and trajectory remain unknown.
