Taxonomy & naming
Pethia yuensis was described by L. Arunkumar and Tombi Singh in 2003, originally placed in the genus Puntius — the large, historically catch-all assemblage that housed most of the small Asian barbs for much of the twentieth century. The species epithet yuensis is a Latinised toponym meaning 'of the Yu River', the Manipur tributary that provided the type locality and remains the taxon's defining drainage. FishBase has at times recorded the authority under a different attribution (Menon, 2003), but the India Biodiversity Portal and primary description literature confirm the correct authorship as Arunkumar and Tombi Singh, 2003.
The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer) now places the species in Pethia, a genus erected by Pethiyagoda, Meegaskumbura and Maduwage in 2012 to accommodate a clade of small, spotted or speckled barbs distributed across peninsular India, the Western Ghats and Sri Lanka, together with some northeastern Indian species. The parenthetical authority (Arunkumar & Tombi Singh, 2003) signals the transfer out of Puntius. Pethia yuensis remains poorly known, with no widely used common name in English or regional vernacular trade names documented. The name Pethia ornata is treated as a synonym of this species in Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes.
Morphology
Pethia yuensis is a small barb reaching a maximum recorded standard length of approximately 2 in, a figure consistent with the compact body plan typical of the genus. Like its congeners it is laterally compressed with a moderately deep body profile, a small terminal mouth, and the paired barbels or their absence characteristic of the Pethia group — most species in this genus lack rostral barbels or have them much reduced.
Detailed morphological data for the species in the public literature are sparse beyond the original description. The species' placement in Pethia implies the suite of characters that define the genus: a moderate lateral line, a relatively high dorsal fin, and a coloration pattern typically involving dark spots or a lateral stripe on a pale to silvery-golden ground — common to the small Indian barb complex.
Habitat
Pethia yuensis is known from the Yu River system in Manipur State, northeastern India. The Yu River is a tributary of the Chindwin, which in turn drains into the Irrawaddy in Myanmar, placing this species in the Indo-Burmese freshwater biogeographic province rather than the Gangetic drainages to the west. This is an area of hilly terrain and seasonally variable rainfall, with streams that range from clear and swift in upper reaches to slower and more silted in lowland sections.
As a benthopelagic freshwater fish of tropical Manipur, the species likely inhabits the flowing stream environments typical of small Pethia across South Asia — shallow to moderate-depth runs over substrate of sand, gravel or rock, with fringing vegetation providing cover. FishBase records the species in freshwater at broadly neutral pH and the warm tropical temperatures characteristic of the region. Precise habitat survey data from primary sources are limited given how little-studied this species remains.
Feeding
No specific feeding studies have been published for Pethia yuensis, and dietary data in the available literature are absent. By analogy with the broader Pethia genus and the ecology of small South Asian barbs generally, the species is presumed to be a microinvertebrate-omnivore — taking small aquatic insects and their larvae, zooplankton, algal growth and fine organic detritus from the substrate and the water column.
Small barbs in flowing stream environments of northeastern India typically exploit the abundant benthic invertebrate fauna, including chironomid larvae, small crustaceans and worms, along with diatoms and algal films scraped from stones. This feeding mode suits their moderately terminal to subterminal mouths and their active, exploratory foraging behaviour in the current.
Mating
Like all barbs, Pethia yuensis is an egg-scattering, non-guarding spawner. No specific behavioural studies exist for the species, but the reproductive biology of the Pethia genus follows the pattern uniform across the Cyprinidae: no pair bond, no nest, and no parental care of any kind. When sexually conditioned fish are ready, a driving male pursues a gravid female through vegetation or across the substrate, and eggs and milt are released together in brief, pressing spawning acts.
Spawning in small Indian stream barbs is often linked to the onset of the monsoon, when rising water levels, increased flow and the flush of food availability trigger conditioning and spawning migrations within stream systems. Adults pay no attention to eggs once deposited, and will consume them given the opportunity.
Breeding
Captive breeding of Pethia yuensis has not been documented in the hobbyist or scientific literature available to date. Given its Vulnerable conservation status and narrow endemic range the species is not currently in the aquarium trade in any meaningful volume, and no dedicated breeding accounts exist.
Were it to be kept and bred, the approach appropriate for small Indian stream barbs would apply: a shallow, well-oxygenated tank with soft to neutral water and a substrate of fine-leaved plants or a spawning mop over which adhesive eggs can be scattered and protected from the adults. Fry would initially require infusoria-grade first foods before graduating to newly hatched brine shrimp. The species' egg-scattering, non-guarding mode means adults must be separated promptly after spawning to prevent egg predation.
In the aquarium
Pethia yuensis is not an established aquarium species. It does not appear in commercial trade catalogues and is unknown in the hobby outside occasional mention in academic accounts of Manipur's fish fauna. Its Vulnerable status and restricted natural range make it an unlikely candidate for widespread availability, and no care guidelines have been published.
Should the species ever become available to specialist keepers, the husbandry requirements analogous to related small Pethia from northeastern India would be a reasonable starting point: a well-filtered, oxygenated aquarium with moderate flow, neutral to slightly acidic water, and water temperatures in the tropical range consistent with Manipur's climate. A shoaling environment with peaceful tankmates of similar size would suit its social nature.
Conservation
Pethia yuensis is assessed as Vulnerable (VU) on the IUCN Red List (2023 assessment), reflecting a combination of restricted range and ongoing habitat degradation. The species is endemic to the Yu River drainage of Manipur, an area of northeastern India subject to agricultural expansion, watershed modification, siltation from deforestation, and infrastructure development.
Manipuris freshwater biodiversity is poorly surveyed relative to the Gangetic plain and Western Ghats, and several species described from the state have been assessed as threatened on the basis of small, potentially fragmented populations and continuing pressure on river habitats. For Pethia yuensis, its entire known range lies within a single river system, meaning any significant disruption to the Yu River drainage represents a range-wide threat. No ex-situ conservation programme is known for the species.
