Taxonomy & naming
Puntius kelumi was described by Pethiyagoda, Silva, Maduwage and Meegaskumbura in 2008 as part of a broader revision of the Sri Lankan cyprinid fauna. The genus Puntius in the broad, historical sense was a vast repository for South and Southeast Asian barbs; the 2012 revision by Pethiyagoda and colleagues broke it into a series of more coherent genera (Puntius, Dawkinsia, Systomus, Hypselobarbus and others), but P. kelumi retained its placement in the residual, more tightly bounded Puntius that remained after those splits. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) lists the valid combination as Puntius kelumi with the authority parenthesised, reflecting its original placement.
The species epithet kelumi honours Kelum Manamendra-Arachchi, a prominent Sri Lankan zoologist and conservationist known for his work on the island's amphibian fauna. The IUCN common name is "Kelums Long snouted barb"; in the aquarium trade it is most often called the Red-eye barb, and in Sinhala it is known as Katu Pethiya. FishBase notes a further vernacular name in Estonian (Kelumi puntius), reflecting the species' history in the European ornamental trade.
Morphology
Puntius kelumi reaches a maximum standard length of around 3.5 in, making it a moderately sized barb by Sri Lankan standards. FishBase records 12 dorsal soft rays and 8 anal soft rays. The body form is elongate and slightly compressed, consistent with life in swift, well-oxygenated hill-stream environments. The name "Red-eye barb" refers to the conspicuously reddish or orange iris that is a reliable identification mark in life, contrasting with the silver-olive flanks and the typical barb patterning.
Beyond the distinctive eye colour, the species displays the moderately elongate snout referenced in its common name "Kelums Long snouted barb", distinguishing it from the shorter-snouted barbs sharing its range. Sexual dimorphism follows the typical barb pattern: females are fuller-bodied when carrying eggs, while males tend to be slimmer; full colour details require direct field observation.
Habitat
The species is restricted to the wet zone of Sri Lanka, known from the Kelani, Kalu, Bentara, Gin and Nilwala river drainages — all rivers descending from the island's wet central highlands westward and southward to the Indian Ocean coast. FishBase describes the occupied habitat as mainly larger clear-water streams with granite, pebble and sand substrates, characteristic of the foothills and lower montane zone where gradient is still significant and current is swift.
These streams are well-oxygenated, generally clear to slightly turbid depending on season, and run over bedrock, boulders and coarse gravel. The tropical climate of the wet zone maintains warm temperatures year-round with marked monsoon-season spates. The IUCN assessment records an Extent of Occurrence of 4,424 mi² and an Area of Occupancy of just 112 mi², and recognises only five known locations — reflecting both the species' natural specificity to this habitat type and the extent to which suitable habitat has contracted.
Feeding
Puntius kelumi is an omnivore in the manner typical of small barbs. In the clear, rocky hill-stream environment it inhabits, likely food items include aquatic and terrestrial invertebrates (insect larvae, small crustaceans), periphyton grazed from rock surfaces, and organic detritus carried by current. No detailed stomach-content study is on record in the available sources, but the benthopelagic habitat designation and the substrate type (granite, pebble, sand) point to a fish that forages both in the water column and along the bottom.
In the aquarium, the species accepts standard omnivore fare — quality small pellets and flake, supplemented with live and frozen foods such as daphnia, bloodworm and brine shrimp. Offering some plant-based component and variety keeps condition good. Its active disposition means it competes well at feeding time in a species-appropriate group.
Mating
Like all members of the genus Puntius, P. kelumi is an egg-scattering, non-guarding spawner. No nest is constructed and no pair bond is maintained; spawning is a brief, repeated event in which a driving male pursues a gravid female through the water column or over the substrate, and the two press together momentarily as eggs and milt are released simultaneously.
In the swift hill-stream habitat the species occupies, spawning likely occurs over clean gravel or among submerged roots and vegetation during periods of good condition and seasonal flood. As with other barbs, the adults take no interest in the eggs once deposited and may consume them given the opportunity. Colour and activity increase markedly in males competing for access to females.
Breeding
Puntius kelumi has been kept and bred in captivity within the European ornamental trade. Breeding follows the standard barb approach: a shallow spawning tank with slightly soft, near-neutral water, fine-leaved plants or a spawning mop, and either a mesh layer or a pebble bed to protect scattered eggs from being eaten. Well-conditioned individuals are introduced, and spawning typically occurs in the early morning.
The adhesive eggs fall among the plants or onto the substrate, where the adults will eat them if not removed. Larvae hatch within a day or two at tropical temperatures, become free-swimming a few days later, and are initially fed infusoria or commercial fry foods before graduating to newly hatched brine shrimp. No parental care of any kind is provided at any stage.
In the aquarium
Puntius kelumi has appeared in the European aquarium trade under the name Red-eye barb and has been kept by hobbyists interested in Sri Lankan cyprinids. It is an active shoaling fish best kept in groups of six or more, where intraspecific social behaviour is directed within the school rather than toward tankmates. A tank with good current, high oxygenation and clear water approximating its native hill-stream conditions suits it well — temperatures in the low-to-mid twenties Celsius and a near-neutral pH are appropriate starting points.
Given the species' Endangered status in the wild, sourcing captive-bred stock is strongly preferable, and hobbyists maintaining it contribute meaningfully to awareness of Sri Lanka's threatened freshwater fauna. It is compatible with other active, similarly sized fishes that tolerate well-oxygenated, moderately fast water. Subdued lighting, a dark substrate and some cover of smooth stones or driftwood replicate the hill-stream aesthetic and reduce stress.
Conservation
Puntius kelumi is listed as Endangered (EN) on the IUCN Red List under criteria B1ab(iii)+2ab(iii), assessed on 26 July 2019. The assessment records an Extent of Occurrence of 4,424 mi² and an Area of Occupancy of only 112 mi², with just five known locations and a continuing decline in habitat quality. Population trend is described as decreasing.
The primary threats identified by the IUCN are deforestation across the wet-zone catchments — stripping bank cover, destabilising substrates and increasing sedimentation — alongside water pollution from agrochemicals (fertilisers and pesticides) used intensively in the lowland agricultural zone through which these rivers flow before reaching the coast. The majority of the species' habitat falls outside formally protected areas, and no targeted conservation measures are in place. The restricted range of these five river drainages means that any further land-use change in southwestern Sri Lanka directly affects all known populations simultaneously.
