Puntius cauveriensis, the Cauvery barb, is a small Western Ghats cyprinid endemic to the Cauvery River drainage in Karnataka and Kerala, southern India. Described by Sunder Lal Hora in 1937 from the Cauvery at Coorg, it inhabits shallow, fast-flowing pools over pebble and gravel substrates below waterfalls — the kind of clear, cool, well-oxygenated hill water typical of Western Ghats endemics. With a maximum standard length of around 3 in, a complete lateral line of 23–27 scales, and a single small pair of maxillary barbels, it is an unassuming yet biogeographically significant species: its restricted range in a heavily pressured river basin has earned it an Endangered listing on the IUCN Red List.

Taxonomy & naming

Puntius cauveriensis was first described by the Indian ichthyologist Sunder Lal Hora in 1937 as Barbus cauveriensis, based on specimens from the Cauvery River at Coorg State (now Kodagu), Karnataka, southern India. The holotype is deposited at the Zoological Survey of India (ZSI F12179/1), and the original description appeared in the Records of the Indian Museum (Calcutta), volume 39, part 1, page 20. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) records the valid current combination as Puntius cauveriensis (Hora, 1937), with the parenthetical authority reflecting the transfer from Hora's original genus Barbus.

The species has been confirmed as a valid species by Talwar & Jhingran (1991), Pethiyagoda et al. (2008, 2012), Plamoottil (2019), and Ren et al. (2020). In the landmark 2012 revision of South and Southeast Asian barbs, Pethiyagoda and colleagues restructured the old catch-all genus Puntius, erecting several new genera for different lineages. Puntius cauveriensis was retained in the restricted genus Puntius, which now applies to a core group of South Asian species lacking certain fin-spine and barbel combinations that characterise the new genera such as Pethia, Dawkinsia, and Sahyadria. The specific epithet cauveriensis is a Latinised adjective derived from "Cauveri" (the Anglicised spelling of the Kaveri River), meaning "of the Cauvery" — a straightforward reference to the type locality.

Morphology

Puntius cauveriensis reaches a maximum standard length of approximately 3 in, making it a medium-small barb. The body is moderately deep and laterally compressed in the typical barb fashion. The coloration is described as grayish-brown with no distinctive markings, setting it apart from many more vividly patterned members of the family; it lacks the bold stripes, spots, or ocelli that characterise showier relatives. The head is relatively small, with the head length fitting about 3.4 times into the standard length.

A single small pair of maxillary barbels is present. The lateral line is complete, running from behind the gill cover to the caudal peduncle with a scale count of 23–27. The last unbranched dorsal ray is osseous and smooth — not serrated — which is a diagnostic character distinguishing it from some similar species in the Western Ghats fauna.

Habitat

Puntius cauveriensis is a freshwater, benthopelagic species restricted to the Cauvery (Kaveri) River drainage in the Western Ghats of Karnataka and Kerala. Documented localities include the Kannige River at Bhagamandala, the Cauvery itself at Chunchanaktte, the Chitturpuzha at Palakkad, and the Malampuzha. These are collectively in the western-draining and eastern-draining hill and foothill rivers of the southern Western Ghats.

The species inhabits shallow pools with pebble and gravel substrates, particularly in the vicinity of waterfalls and fast riffles — the kind of cool, well-oxygenated, clear running water characteristic of hill-stream cyprinids in this region. The Western Ghats receive heavy monsoon rainfall, and these rivers are subject to strong seasonal variation in flow; species adapted to riffles and pool margins must tolerate both spate conditions and lower, clearer dry-season flows.

Feeding

Detailed dietary studies on Puntius cauveriensis specifically are not available in the published literature reviewed. As a benthopelagic cyprinid of fast-flowing hill streams over gravel and pebble, it is likely an opportunistic omnivore in the manner of most small Indian barbs — taking small invertebrates such as insect larvae, crustaceans, and worms from the substrate and water column, supplemented by algae, biofilm, and organic detritus.

In the aquarium it can be expected to accept a wide range of small foods including good-quality flakes and pellets, live and frozen invertebrates, and plant-based matter, consistent with the generalist feeding strategy seen in other members of the genus from similar rheophilic habitats in peninsular India.

Mating

Like all barbs, Puntius cauveriensis is an egg-scattering, non-guarding spawner. No nest is constructed, and there is no parental care of eggs or fry. Spawning behaviour specific to this species has not been documented in the aquarium or field literature reviewed; the following reflects the reproductive pattern shared by the genus.

A receptive male drives a gravid female through vegetation, among gravel, or over the substrate near riffles, the two pressing briefly together to release eggs and milt simultaneously. There is no lasting pair bond. Eggs are adhesive and settle onto the substrate or among plant material, where they are left entirely to their own fate — adults will eat eggs given the opportunity. In Western Ghats rivers, spawning is probably cued to pre-monsoon rises in flow and temperature.

Breeding

Captive breeding of Puntius cauveriensis is not documented in the reviewed hobbyist or scientific literature, reflecting its rarity in the aquarium trade; it is rarely exported and is considered a specialist fish. Based on the biology of closely related hill-stream Puntius species from peninsular India, the approach would follow standard egg-scatterer protocols: a separate spawning vessel with cool, clear, well-oxygenated water, a coarse gravel or pebble base, and fine-leaved plants or a spawning mop.

The adults produce adhesive eggs that settle on the substrate and must be separated from the parents immediately after spawning to prevent predation. Larvae are expected to be small and initially require infusoria or similar fine foods before graduating to newly hatched brine shrimp. Seasonal conditioning mimicking the monsoon cycle — a period of reduced flow and modest warming followed by a temperature drop and water change to simulate pre-monsoon conditions — may help trigger spawning in this rheophilic species.

In the aquarium

Puntius cauveriensis is not an established aquarium fish and is essentially absent from the mainstream trade. It is a specialist species of conservation significance, and any specimens encountered are likely sourced from Indian domestic markets or rare specialist importers; wild collection from an Endangered population raises ethical concerns. It should not be confused with more commonly traded Indian barbs.

For those who do maintain it, the species's natural habitat of cool, clear, fast-moving hill-stream water indicates a preference for well-filtered, highly oxygenated conditions with some current, cooler temperatures than standard tropical settings (likely 64–75 °F given the elevation of many Western Ghats localities), a neutral to slightly acidic pH, and a gravel or pebble substrate. It should be kept in groups, as small barbs generally fare better with conspecifics; tank companions, if any, should be other small, peaceful hill-stream species of similar requirements.

Conservation

Puntius cauveriensis is assessed as Endangered (EN) on the IUCN Red List, with the most recent assessment conducted in 2010 (assessment ID: T172379A6879427, assessor: C.P. Shaji). The population trend is listed as unknown. The species is endemic to the Cauvery River drainage in the Western Ghats, one of the world's recognised biodiversity hotspots, and its restricted range makes it intrinsically vulnerable to any degradation of its river habitat.

The primary threats identified by the IUCN assessment are agricultural and aquacultural land use — including annual and perennial non-timber crop cultivation — and agricultural and forestry effluent pollution entering the Cauvery system. The Cauvery is one of the most heavily utilised rivers in peninsular India, subject to large-scale water extraction for irrigation, hydroelectric schemes, and domestic supply across Karnataka and Tamil Nadu, and its lower-gradient reaches experience significant pollution loads. The hill-stream habitats of pebble pools and waterfall pools that this species depends on are particularly sensitive to siltation and water-quality deterioration resulting from land clearance and agricultural runoff in the Western Ghats foothills.
