Taxonomy & naming
Puntius chola was described by Francis Hamilton in 1822 from northeastern Bengal, the type locality on record. It has accumulated a substantial synonymy over nearly two centuries: Cyprinus chola Hamilton, 1822 is the original combination, and subsequent authors placed it variously as Barbus chola, Systomus tetrarupagus, Leuciscus thermalis, Systomus unimaculatus, and Puntius perlee before the name settled on its current form. All these synonyms reflect the taxonomic reshuffling that plagued Asian cyprinids under the broad genus Puntius and its precursors.
The large-scale revision of South and Southeast Asian barbs by Pethiyagoda and colleagues in 2012 split the old catch-all Puntius into several re-circumscribed genera, erecting Dawkinsia, Pethia, Systomus and others. Puntius chola was explicitly retained within Puntius sensu stricto — one of a smaller core of South Asian species that remain in the genus after the revision. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) records the current valid name as Puntius chola (Hamilton, 1822).
The species is closely related to, and historically confused with, several other smallish South Asian barbs. Its wide geographic range and tolerance of disturbed habitats have contributed to both its frequent collection and its historically messy synonymy.
Morphology
The swamp barb is a moderately deep-bodied, laterally compressed cyprinid reaching about 5 in in standard length, though most wild and aquarium individuals are encountered at 3–4 in. FishBase records a maximum total length of 6 in. The body shape is typical of the Indian Puntius group: not as deep as the highly compressed ornamental barbs, but with a fairly arched dorsal profile and a tapering caudal peduncle.
Coloration is silvery to golden-olive on the flanks, often with a faint bluish or greenish iridescence along the lateral line and a darker dorsal surface. Some individuals, particularly nuptial males, develop an orange-red flush on the anal and pelvic fins and occasionally a reddish lateral stripe. The species is sexually dimorphic: females are larger and deeper-bodied, becoming noticeably rounder when gravid, while males are somewhat slimmer and tend toward more intense fin coloration. Two small barbels are present at the mouth corners.
Habitat
Puntius chola occupies a remarkably broad range of lentic and slow-lotic freshwater habitats across lowland South Asia. It is found in minor streams, medium-sized rivers, irrigation canals and drainage ditches, oxbow lakes (beels and haors in Bangladesh and eastern India), natural ponds and village tanks, and the shallowly inundated fields and floodplain wetlands that are seasonally available across its range. It is benthopelagic, foraging near the bottom but moving freely through the water column.
Field data from the Bhadra River in Karnataka illustrate the typical conditions in a clear upland example: water temperatures around 70 °F, near-neutral pH of about 7.0, and low hardness near 2.5 dGH. FishBase records a broader tropical temperature range of 68–77 °F, pH 6.0–6.5, and hardness of 8–15 dH for the species as a whole, reflecting its presence in a wide variety of water chemistries from soft hill streams to harder lowland waters. The species is potamodromous, meaning it undertakes local freshwater migrations, likely linked to seasonal flooding and food availability.
Feeding
Puntius chola is an opportunistic omnivore. Its diet in the wild includes worms, crustaceans, aquatic insect larvae and other small invertebrates, as well as plant matter, algae and organic detritus gleaned from the substrate and water column. The broad diet is consistent with its generalist, lowland-wetland ecology — a fish that forages across substrates of mud, silt, and accumulated leaf litter in habitats where food availability fluctuates seasonally.
In the aquarium it is undemanding and readily accepts commercial flake and small pellet foods, supplemented with live and frozen items such as bloodworm, daphnia and brine shrimp, and plant-based foods. Its strong foraging instinct means it is active at the surface, mid-water and on the bottom throughout the day.
Mating
Like all members of the genus Puntius and barbs generally, Puntius chola is an egg-scattering, non-guarding spawner. No nest is built, no territory is held beyond a brief courtship pursuit, and no pair bond persists after spawning. A ripe male drives a gravid female through vegetation or over the substrate, and eggs and milt are released together in the water column or among fine-leaved plants.
Nuptial males are reportedly more intensely coloured at spawning time, with the reddish anal and pelvic fins and sometimes a lateral flush becoming more pronounced. Wild spawning is tied to the monsoon season across much of the range, with the seasonal flooding of beels, haors and rice fields providing both the cues and the habitat for reproduction. Specific field documentation of spawning behaviour in this species remains sparse.
Breeding
Puntius chola has been spawned in captivity, though it is not among the most commonly bred ornamental barbs. Spawning in the aquarium follows the standard barb model: the eggs are adhesive and are scattered among fine-leaved plants or deposited over a coarse gravel or mesh substrate, whereupon the adults must be removed to prevent egg predation. A separate, well-conditioned spawning tank with slightly acidic to neutral water and live or frozen foods to trigger condition is the usual approach.
Formal breeding records in the hobbyist literature are limited, and specific clutch sizes and incubation periods under aquarium conditions have not been widely documented. The species' potamodromous nature in the wild and its association with seasonal inundation suggest that falling water levels, temperature cues and dietary conditioning are relevant triggers. Fry are free-swimming within a few days and can be raised on infusoria and then finely powdered food, as with other small barbs.
In the aquarium
The swamp barb is a peaceful, active shoaling species well suited to a community aquarium of medium-sized fishes. It is gregarious and should be kept in groups of six or more; smaller numbers make it timid. It is compatible with other calm, similarly sized species and will not trouble other tankmates. Its modest size — most aquarium fish remain under 4 in — and undemanding nature make it a practical choice.
Water conditions can follow the species' broad wild range: temperatures of 68–77 °F, a broadly neutral pH (6.0–7.5), and soft to moderately hard water are all tolerated. A spacious, well-filtered tank with some planting and open water for swimming suits it well. The swamp barb is not widely exported internationally compared with flashier South Asian barbs, but it is common in the South Asian hobbyist trade and in countries where it is native. Good filtration and regular water changes are the main husbandry requirements.
Conservation
Puntius chola is assessed as Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List, evaluated on 20 March 2010. Its very wide distribution across Pakistan, India, Nepal, Bhutan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka and Myanmar — spanning some of the most densely human-altered freshwater systems in the world — and its tolerance of disturbed habitats, including irrigation canals and village ponds, support this assessment. It appears in the Red List of Bangladesh (Volume 5, Freshwater Fishes) with a Least Concern finding consistent with the global assessment.
Despite its current security, the species faces the same pressures as freshwater fish across the subcontinent: agricultural intensification, intensified water extraction, pollution from pesticides and fertiliser run-off, drainage of seasonal wetlands (beels and haors), and the loss of floodplain connectivity through embankments and flood-control works. As a potamodromous species that exploits seasonal inundation for feeding and spawning, habitat changes that sever the connection between rivers and their floodplain wetlands are likely to affect it. No targeted conservation measures are known to be in place.
