Taxonomy & naming
Puntius burmanicus was described by Francis Day in 1878, originally as Barbus burmanicus, from specimens collected at Mergui (now Myeik) in the Tanintharyi Region of southern Myanmar. The Catalog of Fishes records the current valid combination as Puntius burmanicus (Day, 1878), with the parenthetical authority indicating the transfer out of Day's original genus Barbus. FishBase and the IUCN record Labiobarbus burmanicus (Day, 1878) as an additional synonym.
The species sits within the broad remnant of the old genus Puntius — a heterogeneous assemblage of southern and southeastern Asian barbs that was substantially revised by Pethiyagoda et al. in 2012. Many former Puntius were redistributed into newly erected genera such as Pethia, Dawkinsia, and Sahyadria; burmanicus was retained in Puntius, which now houses species not accommodated by those new genera. The Catalog of Fishes remains the authority for the valid placement.
Morphology
Puntius burmanicus is a moderately sized barb reaching a maximum total length of approximately 4 in, placing it toward the upper end of the Puntius size range. Like most members of the genus it is laterally compressed with a typical barb body plan — arched dorsal profile, subterminal mouth, and well-developed scales.
Detailed colour and fin descriptions are sparse in the available literature. The type locality material was collected in the nineteenth century, and no modern photographic or morphometric redescription appears to have been widely published. What is confirmed is its benthopelagic habit — a fish of the lower water column in riverine environments — consistent with the generalist foraging posture of small to mid-sized Puntius.
Habitat
The IUCN assessment records Puntius burmanicus as occurring in permanent rivers, streams, and creeks within freshwater wetland systems. Its type locality is the Mergui (Myeik) district of Myanmar's Tanintharyi Region, a coastal area of rivers draining the Tenasserim Hills into the Andaman Sea.
No detailed habitat parameters — substrate preference, depth, water chemistry — appear in the published record. FishBase gives a temperature range of 75–79 °F, consistent with the warm lowland tropical rivers of the region. The Tenasserim catchments are characterised by moderate to high rainfall and forested catchments, suggesting the species likely encounters soft to moderately hard, near-neutral to slightly acidic conditions, though no measured values have been associated with verified records.
Feeding
No specific dietary data for Puntius burmanicus has been published. By analogy with ecologically similar Puntius species of comparable size and benthopelagic habit, it is expected to be an opportunistic omnivore — taking small invertebrates such as insect larvae, worms, and microcrustaceans, along with algae, plant fragments, and organic detritus gleaned from the substrate.
The scarcity of field records means gut-content studies have not been reported for this species, and no aquarium accounts appear in the hobbyist literature to supplement the wild data.
Mating
No observations of courtship or mating behaviour in Puntius burmanicus have been recorded. As a member of the Cyprinidae it is expected to follow the characteristic barb reproductive strategy — an egg-scattering, non-guarding spawner in which a driving male pursues a gravid female through vegetation or over the substrate, and eggs and milt are released together in brief spawning rushes.
There is no nest, no territory maintained beyond the moment of courtship, and no pair bond persisting beyond spawning. Adhesive eggs fall among plants, roots, or onto the substrate where, in the absence of parental attention, they are at risk of predation by the adults themselves.
Breeding
Puntius burmanicus has not been bred in captivity in any account available in the literature, and no hobbyist breeding records have been located. The species' reproductive biology is inferred from the barb family pattern: eggs are scattered non-selectively over fine-leaved vegetation or substrate, hatch within one to two days at tropical temperatures, and larvae progress through a yolk-sac stage before becoming free-swimming.
Parental care is absent, as is typical for the genus; adults show no guarding behaviour. Fecundity and clutch size are unknown for this species.
In the aquarium
Puntius burmanicus does not appear in the aquarium trade and has not been maintained in hobbyist collections under this name. The scarcity of field records since its 1878 description suggests the species is either genuinely rare, restricted to a small area, or easily overlooked among more common congeners in the Tenasserim river systems.
Should it enter the hobby, the maintenance approach for comparable medium-sized Puntius would apply: a roomy aquarium with warm water (75–79 °F), moderate current, a mix of open swimming space and planting, and a varied omnivore diet. A shoaling group of at least six to eight individuals is standard for barbs of this size.
Conservation
Puntius burmanicus is assessed as Data Deficient (DD) on the IUCN Red List, evaluated on 18 March 2010 by assessor N. Dahanukar. The assessment notes that the species has been only seldom recorded since its original description and that population size, trend, and range extent remain essentially unknown. The probable range is restricted to the Mergui (Myeik) area of southern Myanmar.
The Tenasserim river systems face increasing pressure from deforestation, agricultural expansion, and infrastructure development in Tanintharyi Region. Without baseline population data it is impossible to determine whether Puntius burmanicus is genuinely rare, locally abundant but overlooked, or in decline. A targeted survey of the Mergui river catchments would be needed to move the species out of Data Deficient status and inform any management response.
