Taxonomy & naming
Puntius amphibius was formally described by Achille Valenciennes in the monumental Cuvier & Valenciennes Histoire naturelle des poissons (1842), with the type locality given as Bombay (present-day Mumbai), India — almost certainly referring to the broader Bombay Presidency rather than the city itself. It has been shuffled across several genera over the decades: the Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS — the governing authority for valid names) lists the old combinations Barbus amphibius, Systomus amphibius, and Capoeta amphibia before settling on the current valid name Puntius amphibius (Valenciennes, 1842).
The Pethiyagoda et al. (2012) revision of the South Asian Puntius aggregate split most Indian and Sri Lankan barbs into new genera (Dawkinsia, Dravidia, Hypselobarbus, Pethia, Systomus and others), but P. amphibius was retained in Puntius under that treatment. Within the current Catalog of Fishes placement the species sits among the handful of mid-to-large Indian barbs that remain in Puntius sensu stricto. The India Biodiversity Portal lists the IUCN authority as working with the Barbus amphibius combination, reflecting the synonymy chain, and FishBase carries the fish under its current valid name.
Morphology
Puntius amphibius is a robust, moderately deep-bodied barb reaching a maximum recorded length of 8 in TL per FishBase — large for the genus and well above the 1.5–3 in range of the ornamental Indian barbs. Like other members of the Puntius complex, it is laterally compressed with a relatively small mouth, a single pair of rostral barbels (as typical for Puntius), and a moderately forked tail.
The common name "scarlet-banded barb" implies a distinctive lateral stripe or banding pattern, but detailed colouration data in the available sources is sparse. The name has been in use in the aquarium and biodiversity literature long enough to imply that at least some degree of red or scarlet pigmentation on the flanks distinguishes this species. Adults in breeding condition are likely to show more intense colouration, as is common in South Asian Puntius. Sexual dimorphism follows the general barb pattern — females broader across the belly when gravid.
Habitat
The species occupies two distinct habitat types within its Western Ghats and coastal range. In the hill foothills and mid-elevation zones — the Kuthiara River basin in Kerala being a documented locality — it inhabits cool, fast-flowing, well-oxygenated streams with gravel, pebble or rocky substrates typical of the Western Ghats wet-zone drainage. These are clear, relatively oligotrophic systems fed by high monsoon rainfall, and the fish communities there are quite distinct from those of the lowland plains.
FishBase additionally records the species from coastal marshes, and the Catalog of Fishes lists freshwater and brackish as valid habitat types — an amphibiousness that the epithet directly references. The Vaigai River–estuary system in Tamil Nadu represents a southern extent of the documented range, where the fish occurs within a trophically complex river–estuary continuum subject to strong seasonal hydrology. The Biotope Aquarium Project places the Kerala-Konkan region as the core distribution, consistent with a Western Ghats endemic that reaches estuarine and coastal wetland habitats along the margins of its range.
Feeding
Ecological guild data from the Vaigai River fish assemblage study characterises Puntius amphibius as a benthic omnivore and detritivore — picking invertebrates, plant material, detritus and organic matter from the substrate surface. This is broadly consistent with the feeding strategies of other medium-to-large Puntius of the Indian subcontinent, which exploit a wide range of benthic food resources across the monsoon cycle.
In fast-flowing hill streams, the diet likely shifts toward aquatic insect larvae, small crustaceans and filamentous algae scraped from rock surfaces; in the brackish coastal marsh habitat, detritus and benthic invertebrates would predominate. No controlled dietary study has been published for this species; the trophic-guild classification is inferred from community-level assemblage research in southern India.
Mating
Like all barbs, Puntius amphibius is an egg-scattering, non-guarding spawner. There is no nest construction, no pair bond, no bubble-nest, and no mouthbrooding. Courtship follows the typical cyprinid pattern in which a ripe male drives a gravid female through vegetation or over gravel, and eggs and milt are released together in brief, energetic bursts.
No species-specific spawning observations have been published, but the biology of closely related Western Ghats Puntius and the general template for the genus are clear: fertilised eggs fall to the substrate or adhere briefly to plants and are thereafter ignored — or consumed — by the adults. Spawning in hill-stream barbs of this size class is often triggered by the onset of the monsoon, when rising water levels, increased flow and lowered water temperature signal seasonal conditions suitable for reproduction.
Breeding
No captive breeding record for Puntius amphibius was found in the available sources, and the species is not established in the ornamental trade in the way that smaller Indian barbs are. The general protocol for breeding large South Asian Puntius involves providing a spacious tank with good water movement, a gravel or pebble bottom, and conditioning with live or frozen foods before allowing a pair or small group to spawn; a temperature drop or large water change mimicking monsoon onset can stimulate spawning in season-dependent species.
Eggs of large barbs in this group are adhesive and typically scattered over gravel or among coarse vegetation. Adults must be separated after spawning to prevent predation on the clutch. Incubation times and fry management details for P. amphibius specifically remain undocumented in the accessible literature; care would presumably resemble that for other large Puntius of similar ecology.
In the aquarium
Puntius amphibius is rarely encountered in the hobby. At up to 8 in TL it requires a large, well-filtered aquarium — a minimum of 55 US gal or more — with strong water movement and high dissolved oxygen to replicate the fast-flowing rocky streams of the Western Ghats. Decor of smooth river cobbles, clean gravel, and sparse tough-leaved plants would reflect the biotope. The species tolerates some brackishness, so a low specific-gravity tolerance may be present, though freshwater conditions are appropriate for long-term maintenance.
The aquarium literature contains very limited information specific to this species. By analogy with other Western Ghats barbs of medium-to-large size, it would be expected to be active, hardy in well-oxygenated water, and omnivorous. A group rather than a single specimen is advisable. Water chemistry should reflect the cool, near-neutral, moderately soft to moderately hard conditions of the foothills — temperatures in the low-to-mid twenties Celsius are likely appropriate, though the species' tolerance of brackish coastal marshes suggests some environmental flexibility.
Conservation
Puntius amphibius is assessed as Data Deficient (DD) on the IUCN Red List (IUCN 2025, version 2025-2), meaning that available data are insufficient to determine its risk of extinction, not that it is necessarily secure. The IUCN authority currently carries the species under the older combination Barbus amphibius in its internal database. A Data Deficient listing for a Western Ghats freshwater fish is a conservation concern in its own right: the Western Ghats are one of the world's recognised biodiversity hotspots, and freshwater fish endemics in the region face ongoing pressure from dam construction, irrigation water extraction, agricultural runoff, sand mining, and the expansion of invasive species such as Tilapia — documented in the same Vaigai River system where P. amphibius occurs.
The species' presence in both clean rocky hill streams and brackish coastal marshes might suggest resilience, but these habitat types are themselves under separate threats in peninsular India. Further survey work is needed to establish the species' true range, population structure and sensitivity to habitat degradation before a more informative IUCN category can be assigned.
