Puntius muzaffarpurensis was described by Srivastava, Verma and Sharma in 1977, published in Matsya (No. 2, for 1976). The type locality is the Baghmati River at Saidpur, Bihar, in the Gangetic drainage of northern India. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, California Academy of Sciences) records the valid name as Puntius muzaffarpurensis (Srivastava, Verma & Sharma, 1977), retaining it in the genus Puntius.
The broader genus Puntius underwent a major revision after Pethiyagoda, Meegaskumbura and Maduwage (2012) reorganised the South Asian 'Puntius' complex in Ichthyological Exploration of Freshwaters (23(1):69–95), splitting many species into new genera including Pethia, Systomus and Dawkinsia. Puntius muzaffarpurensis was not transferred in that revision and continues to be placed in Puntius under the Catalog of Fishes. The species has no established common name in the literature.
Morphology
Detailed morphometric data for Puntius muzaffarpurensis are sparse in the accessible literature. It is a small cyprinid in the barb body plan — laterally compressed, with the typical short snout, barbels, and relatively high body depth characteristic of many Indian Puntius.
