Taxonomy & naming
Puntius thermalis was formally described by the French ichthyologist Achille Valenciennes in 1844, and the parenthetical authority in its current combination marks the species' original placement in a different genus. It belongs to the family Cyprinidae and has been carried under the genus Puntius, the traditional holding group for small to medium South Asian barbs.
The genus Puntius was substantially revised by Pethiyagoda et al. (2012), which redistributed many South Asian species into newly erected genera such as Pethia, Systomus and Dawkinsia. Puntius thermalis was not reassigned in that revision and remains valid under Puntius as confirmed by the Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS), the governing authority for valid names. The specific epithet thermalis, from the Latin for 'warm' or 'thermal', refers to the warm-water habitats the species was associated with at the time of description.
FishBase assigns the species to the broader Puntius complex under Cyprinidae. No subspecies are currently recognised.
Morphology
Puntius thermalis is a small, moderately deep-bodied barb reported to a maximum standard length of 3 in, though most wild individuals are somewhat smaller. The body form is typical of the genus: laterally compressed with a moderately arched dorsal profile, a small terminal mouth, and the single dorsal fin placed at mid-body.
Detailed colouration and meristic data are not well documented in the accessible literature. The species is a benthopelagic fish of shallow, often turbid or slow-moving waters, a habitat preference that is broadly consistent with a silvery or olive-toned body pattern offering camouflage over varied substrates including gravel, sand and mud.
Sexual dimorphism follows the general Puntius pattern: females become noticeably deeper-bodied and rounder when gravid; males are typically slimmer. The degree of colour dimorphism between sexes is not described in detail in available sources.
Habitat
This species is endemic to Sri Lanka, where the IUCN records it from the lowland dry and wet zones of the island, including the coastal belt and up into the mid-hills. It occupies an unusually broad suite of freshwater habitats: slow-moving streams and rivers, irrigation tanks (traditional village reservoirs), larger reservoirs, and marshes. The IUCN assessment gives an Extent of Occurrence of approximately 46,415 mi² and an Area of Occupancy of 219 mi², with populations recorded from around 20 locations.
The species shows a preference for substrates of gravel, sand or mud and is described as benthopelagic — foraging at or near the bottom. The tolerance for both dry-zone and wet-zone conditions, as well as modified habitats such as irrigation tanks, marks it as more generalist than many Sri Lankan endemics. Water temperatures across the lowland and mid-hill range are warm tropical, and the species likely tolerates a range of pH and hardness conditions given the geologically varied nature of Sri Lankan catchments.
Population trend is recorded as decreasing by the IUCN, indicating ongoing pressure on the habitats the species relies on.
Feeding
The IUCN assessment characterises Puntius thermalis as primarily herbivorous with zooplankton also forming part of its diet, consistent with the feeding ecology of many small cyprinids that graze algae and organic detritus from the substrate while opportunistically taking small invertebrates and plankton from the water column.
In slow-moving streams, tanks and marshes the species likely browses periphyton and filamentous algae from submerged surfaces and picks up small crustaceans, insect larvae and plant material. As a generalist Sri Lankan lowland barb it would be expected to thrive in warm, near-neutral water with moderate planting and open swimming space, fed a varied diet of prepared foods and live or frozen invertebrates. Being a social cyprinid it is best kept in groups, which moderates inter-individual aggression and produces more natural shoaling behaviour. Given the species' declining wild population trend, captive-bred stock is preferable to wild-caught individuals, though availability through specialist suppliers may be limited.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List (2019 assessment, published 2019) lists Puntius thermalis as Least Concern (LC), but notes a decreasing population trend. The species' Extent of Occurrence across Sri Lanka is relatively large, and it persists in modified habitats including irrigation tanks and reservoirs, which contributes to its current LC rating.
The primary threats identified in the IUCN assessment are habitat loss driven by deforestation, pollution from urban and agricultural sources, and broader ecosystem modifications affecting Sri Lanka's lowland freshwater systems. Sri Lanka has experienced substantial loss of natural wetlands and riparian vegetation over recent decades, and many of the slow streams and marshes this species inhabits are subject to drainage, agricultural conversion and pesticide runoff. Continued monitoring is warranted given the downward population trajectory, particularly for populations in the wet zone where habitat pressure is most intense.
