Systomus martenstyni, Martenstyn's barb, is a large, endangered cyprinid endemic to the island of Sri Lanka — a river barb found principally in tributaries of the Mahaweli Ganga, the island's longest river, and associated rainforest streams of the wet zone. Described by Kottelat and Pethiyagoda in 1991, it belongs to a lineage of Sri Lankan Systomus whose diversification is tied to the origin and expansion of the island's rainforests from the late Oligocene onward. Reaching up to 10 in in standard length, it is one of the larger barbs in the Sri Lankan fauna and carries modest commercial importance in local freshwater fisheries. Ongoing deforestation, agricultural conversion and sedimentation of the rainforest stream catchments it depends on have driven the IUCN to assess it as Endangered.

Taxonomy & naming

Systomus martenstyni was formally described by Maurice Kottelat and Rohan Pethiyagoda in 1991. The species name honours J. L. Martenstyn, a Sri Lankan naturalist who contributed specimens and locality data during the colonial period. The authority is therefore written without parentheses — Kottelat & Pethiyagoda, 1991 — because the species has remained in the genus Systomus since its original description.

Historically the genus Systomus was submerged into the expansive Puntius, and older literature may list this fish as Puntius martenstyni. The comprehensive revision of South Asian barbs by Pethiyagoda et al. (2012) reinstated Systomus as a valid genus encompassing several large-bodied, predominantly South Asian and Sri Lankan barbs, and that is the placement followed here and by the Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS). Molecular phylogenetic work by Sudasinghe et al. (2020, Zoologica Scripta) placed S. martenstyni within a Sri Lankan endemic clade whose diversification tracks the late Oligocene and early Miocene history of the island's rainforest biome.

The species is recorded from the Mahaweli Ganga basin and associated wet-zone river systems of Sri Lanka. Rajakaruna et al. (2015, Check List) confirmed its endemic, endangered status from field surveys in Mahaweli tributaries.

Morphology

Systomus martenstyni is a robust, moderately deep-bodied barb reaching up to 10 in in standard length — large for a Sri Lankan stream cyprinid. The body is laterally compressed, with the typical Systomus profile of a moderately elevated back and a blunt snout bearing two pairs of barbels. Coloration in preserved specimens and live fish from the literature is silvery to olive-bronze on the flanks, with faint scale reticulation; breeding males are reported to develop more vivid colouration on the fins.

Beyond size and basic body plan, detailed morphometric and meristic data for this species are sparse in the accessible literature, reflecting the limited research effort on Sri Lanka's freshwater fish fauna relative to continental Asian groups.

Habitat

Martenstyn's barb occupies fast-flowing, clear hill streams and river tributaries in the wet zone of Sri Lanka, particularly within the Mahaweli Ganga catchment. These are typically well-oxygenated, shaded watercourses flowing through lowland and submontane rainforest, with substrates of boulder, cobble and gravel and seasonal variation in discharge tied to the south-west monsoon.

The species is associated with intact and near-intact forest cover; degraded, open-canopy streams subject to heavy sedimentation are avoided or inhabited at lower densities. This close dependence on rainforest stream habitats places it in the same threatened biome that Sudasinghe et al. (2020) identified as the driver of diversification in Sri Lankan Systomus — the very habitat now most under pressure from human land use.

Feeding

Specific dietary studies on Systomus martenstyni are not available in the published sources consulted. Based on the feeding ecology of congeneric and ecologically similar large river barbs of South Asia, the species is inferred to be an omnivore, taking invertebrates, algae, plant material and organic detritus from the substrate and water column. Its size and robust body suggest an ability to exploit a wide range of benthic food items in the coarse-gravel runs and pools it inhabits.

In areas where it remains locally common, it carries reported commercial importance for small-scale local freshwater fisheries, indicating that it reaches sufficient biomass to sustain harvest pressure — at least historically.

Mating

Like all barbs, Systomus martenstyni is an egg-scattering, non-guarding spawner. No nest is built and no parental care is given at any stage. Large river barbs in the Systomus group are typically seasonal broadcast spawners whose reproductive activity is tied to rising water levels and increased flow associated with the monsoon, which provides cues and fresh, oxygenated conditions for gamete release over gravel and rocky substrates.

Courting males pursue gravid females through the current, releasing eggs and milt together in brief adhesive contacts. There is no pair bond, no territory held beyond the moment of spawning, and eggs and larvae receive no protection from either parent after release.

Breeding

No captive breeding account for Systomus martenstyni appears in the available hobbyist or scientific literature, consistent with the species' rarity in the international aquarium trade and its Endangered conservation status. Its biology as a large barb suggests that, like other Systomus, it would be a seasonal, current-associated spawner scattering adhesive eggs over gravel or rocky substrates, with hatching and larval development in well-oxygenated, flowing water.

Breeding in captivity would require large facilities, appropriate seasonal conditioning, and robust water flow, and the species' Endangered status means that wild collection for the trade is inadvisable. Data on fecundity, incubation time and larval development are absent from the accessible literature.

In the aquarium

Systomus martenstyni is not established in the international aquarium hobby and is essentially absent from the trade. Its large adult size — up to 10 in SL — and its dependence on cool, fast, well-oxygenated rainforest stream conditions would make it a demanding species requiring a very large aquarium with high flow, good aeration and minimal organic loading. Water chemistry should reflect its Sri Lankan hill-stream origins: near-neutral pH, moderate hardness and temperatures on the cooler side of the tropical range.

Given its Endangered status and very limited distribution, the species should not be sought from wild sources. Any sustainable presence in the hobby would depend on captive breeding programs operating within or in cooperation with Sri Lankan conservation institutions.

Conservation

Systomus martenstyni is assessed as Endangered (EN) on the IUCN Red List (2019 assessment). It is endemic to Sri Lanka and has been confirmed from a restricted set of localities, principally within the Mahaweli Ganga basin, with field surveys by Rajakaruna et al. (2015) documenting its presence in Mahaweli tributaries and underscoring its threatened status.

The primary threats are habitat-related: deforestation and agricultural conversion of the wet-zone rainforest catchments that this species requires, compounded by sedimentation, water extraction and pollution from upstream land use. Sri Lanka's wet zone — the heart of this species' range — has experienced severe historical forest loss and continues to face pressure from expanding smallholder agriculture, tea and rubber plantations and human settlement. The species' close association with intact forest streams, documented by Sudasinghe et al. (2020), means that forest protection and catchment restoration are the most direct conservation levers available. It is also subject to some level of harvest in local fisheries, which adds a direct exploitation pressure on an already restricted and declining population.
