Systomus compressiformis is a small, laterally compressed barb endemic to Inle Lake in the Shan Plateau of Myanmar — one of the most geographically restricted freshwater fish in Southeast Asia. Originally described from the lake's waters by Prashad and Mukerji in 1913 and long carried under the genus Puntius, it is today placed in Systomus under the Catalog of Fishes. The species occupies open-water habitats in a lake whose extent of occurrence has fallen below 62 mi², and it is listed as Critically Endangered on the IUCN Red List following severe declines driven by drainage, eutrophication and invasive species. It is virtually absent from the aquarium hobby.

Taxonomy & naming

Systomus compressiformis was described by Baini Prashad and Dhan Mukerji in 1913 from specimens collected at Fort Stedman and Inle Lake in what is now Shan State, Myanmar. The original genus assignment was Systomus — a name coined by F. Hamilton in 1822 for a group of South and Southeast Asian barbs — though the species was subsequently shuffled into the large catch-all genus Puntius along with hundreds of other Asian barbs, and most 20th-century literature refers to it as Puntius compressiformis. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS), the authority for valid fish names, now recognises the combination as Systomus compressiformis (Prashad & Mukerji, 1913).

The generic revisions that followed Pethiyagoda et al. (2012) saw many Asian barbs redistributed across reinstated or newly erected genera on morphological and molecular grounds. Systomus, a genus primarily of South and Southeast Asian large-river barbs, was retained for a modest cluster of species including this one. The specific epithet compressiformis is Latin for "having the form of something compressed", a direct reference to the fish's notably deep and flattened body.

No recognised subspecies or colour morphs are documented in the literature.

Morphology

As its name suggests, Systomus compressiformis is a strongly laterally compressed barb — its body is noticeably deeper and more disc-like in profile than most of its congeners. The precise maximum length is not well documented in published sources; FishBase lists it within the size range typical for Systomus, but specific total-length data for this species is sparse, a reflection of how rarely it has been collected or studied.

The body form — high-backed and compressed — is suited to the open, calm waters of a lake rather than fast-flowing rivers. Beyond the compression, morphological details (scale counts, barbel arrangement, fin formulae) follow the general Systomus plan: two pairs of barbels, a dorsal fin with a stiffened last unbranched ray, and the typical cyprinid pharyngeal teeth. Published measurements and coloration notes for live fish are limited; the species is rarely encountered by scientists or hobbyists outside Myanmar.

Habitat

Systomus compressiformis is confined to Inle Lake, an ancient, shallow lake situated on the Shan Plateau in eastern Myanmar at an elevation of roughly 2887 ft above sea level. The lake is one of the few permanent high-altitude lentic water bodies in mainland Southeast Asia and harbours a notably endemic freshwater fish fauna. The species is described as an open-water fish, inhabiting the pelagic zone of the lake rather than the dense macrophyte beds that fringe the shore.

FishBase records water parameters for Inle Lake habitat as approximately 75 °F, pH 7, and around 10 dGH — a slightly hard, near-neutral warm to mildly cool lake environment reflecting the plateau elevation and the lake's buffered chemistry. This stands in contrast to the soft, acidic blackwater conditions of many lowland Sundaland barbs. The lake's total surface area is roughly 72 mi², and the extent of occurrence of this species within it has contracted substantially as suitable open-water habitat has diminished.

Feeding

No detailed dietary study of Systomus compressiformis in the wild has been published. Based on its morphology and the guild ecology of comparable barbs in lake environments, it is presumed to be an omnivore taking zooplankton, small invertebrates, algae and particulate organic matter from the water column and the lake's substrate margins.

In the severely degraded and eutrophied conditions now prevailing in parts of Inle Lake, the availability and composition of food resources has likely shifted considerably from the lake's historical state. Specific gut-content analyses for this species have not been located in the literature accessible at the time of writing.

Mating

Like all barbs, Systomus compressiformis is presumed to be an egg-scattering, non-guarding spawner. No published account of courtship behaviour specific to this species exists, but the reproductive biology follows the uniform barb pattern: a driving male pursues a gravid female, and eggs and milt are released together over fine-leaved plants, submerged vegetation or open substrate. No nest is constructed, no territory is defended beyond a brief courtship chase, and adults provide no parental care.

No breeding records from either the wild or captivity have been documented in accessible literature, which is unsurprising given the species' extreme rarity in collections and its near-total absence from the aquarium hobby.

Breeding

Systomus compressiformis has not been bred in captivity under documented conditions, and published descriptions of its natural reproductive cycle are absent. The default barb reproductive mode — egg-scattering over substrate or vegetation without parental care, with adhesive eggs that hatch within one to two days at tropical temperatures — is expected to apply.

Given the species' Critically Endangered status and its restriction to a single lake in a politically complex region, no captive breeding programme has been established. The population continues to face severe in-situ pressures with no known ex-situ safety net.

In the aquarium

Systomus compressiformis is not maintained in the aquarium hobby under any established trade name and has not been exported from Myanmar in meaningful numbers. It does not appear in commercial availability lists, and no husbandry recommendations based on sustained captive experience exist.

Its ecological preferences — open water in a moderately hard, neutral, warm highland lake — suggest it would differ from the soft-acidic blackwater barbs familiar to most hobbyists. Any future effort to maintain the species in captivity would most plausibly occur in the context of a conservation-breeding initiative rather than the ornamental trade.

Conservation

Systomus compressiformis is assessed as Critically Endangered (CR) on the IUCN Red List, with the assessment dated 24 February 2011 under criteria A2d and B1ab. The B1ab criterion is particularly telling: the species' extent of occurrence is calculated at less than 62 mi², the fish is known from a single location (Inle Lake), and continuing decline in the quality and extent of its open-water habitat has been documented.

Inle Lake has been profoundly altered by a combination of anthropogenic pressures: drainage and land reclamation for agriculture, heavy nutrient loading from the surrounding agricultural and human settlements causing severe eutrophication, siltation from deforested catchment slopes, and the establishment of invasive fish species that alter the food web and compete with or prey upon endemic fauna. The lake's endemic fish assemblage — Systomus compressiformis among them — has declined steeply under these cumulative pressures. There is no captive population known to exist, and in-lake conservation measures have been limited. The species exemplifies the vulnerability of single-lake endemics across Southeast Asia.
