Taxonomy & naming
Systomus gracilus was described by Mathews Plamoottil and Dipak Maji in July 2020 in the Journal of Experimental Zoology, India (vol. 23, no. 2, pp. 1033–1038), based on specimens collected from the Ganges River at Naihati, West Bengal (approximately 22.89°N, 88.42°E). Type specimens were deposited in Zoological Survey of India museums at Pune and Port Blair.
The genus Systomus, resurrected and redefined as part of the sweeping reorganisation of Asian barbs following Pethiyagoda et al. (2012), takes in large-bodied Indian and Sri Lankan barbs previously lumped under the broad paraphyletic genus Puntius. S. gracilus was formally diagnosed against nine to thirteen congeners including S. sarana, S. subnasutus, S. chryseus, S. rufus, S. laticeps, and S. immaculatus, as well as certain extinct or invalidated names, and was shown to differ from all of them in the combination of body proportions, squamation, and fin-ray counts described below. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) records the species under its original combination Systomus gracilus Plamoottil & Maji, 2020.
Morphology
The holotype measured 4.5 in standard length; the described series ranged from 4.5 in SL, making S. gracilus a medium-to-large barb for its genus. The body is exceptionally deep — body depth 39.1–40.7% of SL — and strongly compressed laterally, with a body width of only 14.9–15.8% SL. The overall form is therefore disc-like relative to most Systomus, despite the species name (Latin gracilis, slender) alluding to the thin profile seen face-on.
Colouration in preserved specimens is described as light reddish-white on the body and fins, with no caudal spot — a character that distinguishes it from several superficially similar congeners that carry a dark peduncular or caudal marking. The lateral line carries 29–30 scales, and 11–12 pre-dorsal scales were counted in the type series. The last dorsal ray is thick but only weakly ossified, with a serrated inner margin. The anal fin uniquely bears six branched rays; all compared Systomus species examined for the original description had five, making this the most reliable meristic marker for the species. Maxillary and rostral barbels are minute and do not reach the orbit.
Habitat
The type locality is the main channel of the Ganges at Naihati, a town in West Bengal on the east bank of the river roughly 22 mi north of Kolkata. The collection site was described as a deep, wide stretch of river — approximately four metres deep and 710 metres across — with water of slightly dark appearance, consistent with turbid alluvial conditions typical of the lower Ganga plain.
The original description records dense aquatic vegetation at the site, including Utricularia, Hydrilla, and Vallisneria, as well as moderate riparian cover and a diverse invertebrate community. Associated fish fauna comprised a variety of cyprinids and other freshwater species characteristic of the Gangetic system. Whether S. gracilus also occupies adjacent wetlands, oxbows, or flood-plain channels connected to the main river is not yet known from published records.
Feeding
No specific dietary study has been published for Systomus gracilus. FishBase classifies its trophic mode as harmless omnivory, consistent with the feeding guild typical of Systomus and most large Indian barbs, which consume a mixture of aquatic invertebrates, plant material, algae, and organic detritus.
Given the dense growth of submerged macrophytes (Utricularia, Hydrilla, Vallisneria) recorded at the type locality, the species likely forages among and upon vegetation, taking invertebrates associated with plant surfaces alongside plant matter itself. The diverse invertebrate community noted at the site — typical of productive lower-Ganga habitat — would offer abundant benthos including worms, small crustaceans, and insect larvae.
Mating
No observations of reproductive behaviour in the wild or in captivity have been published for Systomus gracilus. As with other members of the genus and the family Cyprinidae more broadly, the species is expected to be an egg-scattering, non-guarding spawner.
In barbs of comparable size from the Gangetic system, ripening females become notably plump when gravid, and spawning males drive them actively through vegetation or over the substrate, releasing eggs and milt in brief contact. No nest is constructed, no pair bond is formed beyond the spawning event itself, and neither parent guards eggs or fry.
Breeding
No captive breeding records for S. gracilus are documented in the published literature or in the aquarium hobby press, which reflects the species' status as a very recently described, trade-absent endemic known only from field collections.
By analogy with larger Systomus such as S. sarana — which breeds seasonally in rivers and floodplains, scattering adhesive eggs over submerged vegetation or gravel — S. gracilus likely spawns during the monsoon season or rising water, when food availability peaks and fish are in peak condition. Adults would give no parental care; eggs and fry are left entirely unattended after spawning.
In the aquarium
Systomus gracilus is not established in the aquarium hobby and was not available in trade at the time of its description in 2020. No husbandry reports, tank requirements, or captive-maintenance guidelines have been published.
Its large adult size — over 4.5 in SL — and its origin in the deep, moderately turbid Ganges channel suggest that any future captive maintenance would require a spacious aquarium with robust filtration and water movement. The dense aquatic vegetation present at its type locality hints at a tolerance for, or preference for, planted environments, though the turbid Gangetic conditions differ markedly from the clear, soft water typical of hill-stream barb habitats. Diet in captivity would likely follow the general omnivore template shared by other large Systomus.
Conservation
Systomus gracilus has not been evaluated by the IUCN Red List; as a species described only in 2020, it falls among the many recently named Indian cyprinids not yet assessed under the formal Red List criteria.
The type locality — the main-channel Ganges at Naihati — sits within one of the most heavily modified freshwater systems in South Asia. The lower Ganga is subject to intense pressure from water extraction, industrial and municipal pollution, sand mining, and disruption of seasonal flood cycles. Whether S. gracilus is genuinely localised to this stretch of river, or occurs more broadly through the Gangetic plain, is not yet known; the answer would substantially affect any assessment of its vulnerability. Until further survey work establishes its actual range and population structure, its conservation status must remain uncertain.
