Systomus binduchitra is a small cyprinid barb from Myanmar, reaching about 3 in in total length and distinguished by a bold black bar or blotch on the posterior half of the body against a silvery ground colour — the feature that inspired its Sanskrit epithet meaning 'spotted'. Described by Sunder Lal Hora in 1937 from Thandwe (formerly Sandoway) on Myanmar's Arakan coast, it is one of around 17 currently recognised species in the genus Systomus, a group of medium-sized Asian barbs distributed across South and Southeast Asia. It remains little-known in the scientific literature but has appeared in the aquarium trade, where its lively, schooling behaviour and preference for digging in sandy substrates have attracted modest hobbyist interest.

Taxonomy & naming

Systomus binduchitra was formally described by the Indian ichthyologist Sunder Lal Hora in 1937. The type locality is Thandwe (Sandoway), a coastal town in the Rakhine (Arakan) region of Myanmar. The species was originally placed in the genus Systomus, though as with many Asian barbs it has variously appeared in older literature under the catch-all genera Puntius and Barbus; the current valid combination, as recorded by the Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS), is Systomus binduchitra (Hora, 1937), with the parenthetical authority reflecting its original generic placement.

A 2020 phylogenetic revision of the genus Systomus by Sudasinghe and colleagues (Zoologica Scripta, vol. 49) recognises approximately 17 valid species in the genus across South and Southeast Asia. That study confirms S. binduchitra as a valid species distinguished from its congeners — notably the widely distributed S. sarana, to which it is most closely related — by a distinctive black bar or blotch on the posterior flank. The broader genus Systomus sits within the family Cyprinidae and was separated from the old, paraphyletic Puntius through a series of revisions since the 2010s; ichthyologists working on South and Southeast Asian cyprinids now use a suite of more tightly defined genera in place of the former catch-all.

Morphology

Systomus binduchitra is a moderately sized barb reaching a maximum of approximately 3 in total length, representing the largest scientifically recorded specimen. The body form is typical of the genus: laterally compressed, moderately deep-backed, and streamlined for active swimming in flowing water.

The most diagnostic feature is a distinctive black bar or blotch on the posterior half of the body — the character that sets it apart from congeners such as S. sarana. The ground colour is silvery, and the dark posterior marking gives the fish a spotted or banded appearance. This pattern is the direct reference of the Sanskrit epithet binduchitra. Beyond this key marking, detailed meristic and morphometric data in the accessible literature are sparse; interested readers are directed to the original description and the 2020 Sudasinghe et al. revision for full counts.

Habitat

Systomus binduchitra is recorded from Myanmar, with the type locality at Thandwe in the Rakhine coastal region. FishBase characterises its habitat as still water, which may reflect its occurrence in the quieter margins of lowland rivers, floodplain pools, or coastal drainages — environments common to barbs in this part of Indochina.

Aquarium Glaser, working with live imported specimens, records that the fish favour sandy substrates and have a notable tendency to dig. The temperature recorded for aquarium-kept individuals is approximately 64 °F and a pH around 7.0, suggesting the species tolerates relatively cool, neutral conditions compared to more tropical Sundaland barbs — consistent with its position in the Rakhine hill-coast drainages rather than equatorial lowland systems. Detailed wild-habitat surveys and water-chemistry data from its native range remain unpublished in the accessible literature.

Feeding

Systomus binduchitra is an omnivore. Aquarium Glaser notes that the species accepts a varied diet that should include vegetable components, in keeping with the feeding habits typical of Systomus barbs, which in the wild consume a mix of plant matter, algae, small invertebrates, and organic detritus from the substrate and water column.

In the aquarium, the species is reported to be undemanding and takes standard offerings readily. Given its digging behaviour, it likely forages through the substrate for small food items in nature. A diet that balances protein-rich live and frozen foods with plant-based material suits the species well in captivity.

Mating

Like all barbs, Systomus binduchitra is an egg-scattering, non-guarding spawner. No nest is constructed and no parental care is given at any stage. Courtship in barbs of this type involves an active male pursuing a gravid female through fine-leaved vegetation, roots, or over the substrate, with eggs and milt released together during brief contact spawning bouts.

Aquarium Glaser notes that the species is extremely social and thrives in schools, which in nature facilitates the opportunistic group spawning behaviour characteristic of barbs. No species-specific accounts of mating behaviour in the wild or in controlled aquarium conditions appear in the available literature for S. binduchitra, but the egg-scattering pattern is consistent across the genus.

Breeding

No detailed captive-breeding account for Systomus binduchitra appears in the accessible literature. Based on its close relationship to S. sarana and general Systomus biology, breeding would be expected to follow the standard barb pattern: egg-scattering over fine-leaved plants or sandy substrate, with adhesive eggs that receive no parental attention.

In a typical barb breeding setup, a separate spawning tank with slightly warmer water, a mesh or plant layer to protect eggs from the adults, and conditioning on live or frozen foods would be appropriate starting points. Adults are likely to eat both eggs and fry if left together after spawning. The species' FishBase resilience rating of High — with a minimum population doubling time under 15 months — implies it can reproduce readily when conditions are right, a trait common to small, active barbs.

In the aquarium

Systomus binduchitra has appeared in the European aquarium trade via specialist importers such as Aquarium Glaser, which records it as a lively and extremely social species that should be kept in schools. Its active, gregarious nature and moderate size (to 3 in) make it a manageable aquarium fish for tanks of appropriate volume.

The species' preference for digging in sandy substrates should be accommodated: a soft or fine-grained bottom substrate and robust rooted plants (or plants attached to hardscape rather than planted in substrate) suit it well. Reported aquarium temperature around 64 °F and pH 7.0 suggest it tolerates cooler conditions than many tropical barbs, making it compatible with similarly temperate-leaning species. A school of at least six individuals is recommended to bring out natural behaviour and reduce stress. Detailed long-term husbandry data from hobbyists are sparse, and the species is not commonly encountered outside specialist trade channels.

Conservation

Systomus binduchitra has not been assessed by the IUCN Red List and carries a status of Not Evaluated (NE). No population estimates, range maps, or formal threat assessments have been published for the species.

Its known range is restricted to Myanmar — specifically the Rakhine coastal drainages around Thandwe — a region that has faced environmental pressures including deforestation, agricultural runoff, and coastal-plain habitat alteration. Without a formal assessment it is not possible to assign a threat category, but the narrow known range warrants monitoring. The species' High resilience rating on FishBase (population doubling time under 15 months) is a positive indicator of reproductive capacity, though habitat loss in lowland Myanmar freshwaters remains a concern for many narrowly distributed cyprinids. Collection for the aquarium trade appears to be low-volume and specialist in nature.
