Taxonomy & naming
Systomus immaculatus was described by the Scottish surgeon and naturalist John McClelland in 1839, with the type locality given as Assam. The species epithet immaculatus is Latin for "unspotted" or "without blemish", a reference to the plain, unmarked sides that distinguish this barb from pattern-bearing relatives.
Like many Indian and Sri Lankan barbs, the species has passed through several generic homes. It was long placed in the broadly inclusive genus Barbus and subsequently in Puntius — the old catch-all that once held most Asian small barbs. Following the landmark revision of South Asian barb genera by Pethiyagoda and colleagues (2012), many species were re-assigned to newly erected genera; Systomus immaculatus now sits in Systomus, the valid combination recognised by the Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS), which is the authority for valid names followed here. References to Barbus immaculatus or Puntius immaculatus in older literature and databases refer to the same fish.
The genus Systomus encompasses several Indian and Sri Lankan barbs of moderate to large size. The taxonomic history of the group is still being clarified, and Systomus immaculatus remains one of the least-documented members of the genus.
Morphology
Systomus immaculatus is an elongated barb — its body form is notably less deep and compressed than the stocky schooling barbs familiar to most aquarists. FishBase records a maximum standard length of 7.5 in, making it a substantial species within the genus. The dorsal fin carries 12 soft rays and the anal fin 8 soft rays, counts that accord with the general Systomus bauplan.
The species epithet immaculatus reflects the most diagnostic external feature: the flanks are plain and lack spots, bars, or other patterning. Ground coloration and precise fin pigmentation details are not well documented in the published literature, and no detailed meristic or morphometric study has been widely reported in accessible sources. Sexually dimorphic characters, if present, have not been formally described.
Habitat
Systomus immaculatus is native to the Brahmaputra River basin in Assam, northeastern India, with records from the Subansiri River among its tributaries. The Brahmaputra is one of the world's great Himalayan-fed river systems, draining a vast area and carrying warm, turbid, silty water through the Assam plains before it crosses into Bangladesh and joins the Bay of Bengal delta.
The species is described as benthopelagic in habit, occurring in slow to moderately flowing freshwater reaches. As a subtropical lowland species of a large, seasonally dynamic river system, it likely encounters a range of temperature and chemistry conditions across the annual flood cycle. Detailed water-chemistry parameters for the species' preferred microhabitats are not available in published records.
Feeding
No dietary study of Systomus immaculatus in the wild has been published in accessible literature. By analogy with other Systomus and closely related Indian barbs of comparable size and habitat, the species is likely an omnivore taking small invertebrates, plant material and organic detritus from the substrate and lower water column — a feeding mode consistent with the benthopelagic lifestyle attributed to it by FishBase.
Its size suggests it may also consume small fish, molluscs or crustaceans opportunistically, as is seen in other large Indian cyprinids occupying similar lowland river habitats.
Mating

As a member of the family Cyprinidae, and consistent with all barbs, the species is an egg-scattering, non-guarding spawner. Courting males in related large Systomus species pursue gravid females, driving them through vegetation or over the substrate to release eggs and milt simultaneously. Spawning in seasonally flooding Brahmaputra tributaries is likely triggered by rising water temperatures and flood cues associated with the annual monsoon cycle — a pattern widespread among South Asian river cyprinids.
Breeding
No captive breeding reports for Systomus immaculatus have been located in the available literature. The species' ecology suggests it is a seasonal broadcast spawner, releasing adhesive or semi-adhesive eggs over substrate or vegetation in shallow, warm, flooded marginal areas during the monsoon season. Eggs and larvae receive no parental care once scattered.
Given the species' size and the ecological pattern of large-river South Asian barbs, it is probable that successful reproduction depends on seasonal hydrological cues — rising water levels and warming temperatures — that are difficult to replicate outside its native habitat. Systomus immaculatus does not appear to be kept or traded in the ornamental fishkeeping hobby. No aquarium-care records have been found, and its large adult size — approaching 8 in standard length — would in any case make it a demanding subject requiring a very spacious tank and a diet appropriate to a large, active cyprinid.
The species' natural habitat in the Brahmaputra basin involves subtropical temperatures and the variable conditions of a large, monsoon-driven river system. Any hobbyist encountering this fish should provide generous space, robust filtration, and a seasonal temperature regime, while recognising that the species' requirements and behaviour in captivity are essentially undocumented.
Conservation
Systomus immaculatus has not been formally assessed by the IUCN Red List and carries a status of Not Evaluated (NE). Published data on population size, trends, and precise range extent within Assam are lacking, which makes an informed conservation evaluation difficult.
The Brahmaputra basin faces significant and growing anthropogenic pressures: dam construction and hydropower development on the main channel and tributaries, intensive floodplain agriculture, sedimentation, and pollution from expanding urbanisation and industry. Freshwater fish diversity in Assam is poorly inventoried relative to better-studied Himalayan-foothill systems, and several species from the region remain data-deficient in global databases. An IUCN assessment of Systomus immaculatus, supported by field surveys to clarify its distribution and abundance across the Brahmaputra tributary network, would be a valuable first step toward understanding any conservation need.
