Systomus pleurotaenia, the black-lined barb or side-striped barb, is a medium-sized cyprinid endemic to Sri Lanka, where it is restricted to a handful of river catchments in the island's wet zone. Named for the dark longitudinal band running from eye to caudal base, it inhabits deep, shaded forest streams of clear water — habitats that have contracted sharply as Sri Lanka's lowland rainforests have been cleared and its rivers impounded. The IUCN assesses the species as Vulnerable, placing it among the more threatened members of the Sri Lankan freshwater fish fauna, a radiation of small barbs that has suffered disproportionately from island-wide habitat loss.

Taxonomy & naming

Systomus pleurotaenia was described by the Dutch ichthyologist Pieter Bleeker in 1863, originally in the genus Systomus, from specimens collected in the Kelani and Nilwala Rivers of Sri Lanka. The name was long carried under Puntius — the broad catch-all genus that absorbed much of the Asian barb diversity through the twentieth century — and older literature and some aquarium trade sources still list it as Puntius pleurotaenia. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS, the governing authority for valid names) places it back in Systomus as currently accepted, a genus that has seen renewed use following the major reclassification of Old World barbs by Pethiyagoda and colleagues in 2012.

The subfamily Smiliogastrinae, to which Systomus belongs, was characterised by Bleeker himself in 1863 and encompasses small barbs sharing a set of anatomical features. The Sri Lankan endemic barb fauna — several species of Systomus and related genera — represents a long-isolated radiation on the island, largely co-distributed with the Western Ghats ichthyofauna of southern India across a historically connected landmass. A 2023 biogeographic study (Sudasinghe et al., Scientific Reports) situated Systomus pleurotaenia lineages specifically within the Gin and Nilwala basin drainage systems, underlining both its phylogenetic distinctiveness and its narrow geographic footprint.

Morphology

Systomus pleurotaenia is a moderately large barb reaching 6.5 in in total length, making it one of the bigger members of the Sri Lankan endemic barb assemblage. The body is elongated and laterally compressed in the typical barb fashion, with a complete lateral line, a single pair of maxillary barbels, and the absence of any dorsal-fin spine — features distinguishing it from the spine-bearing barbs of some other lineages.

The most immediately obvious feature is the dark horizontal band from which the species takes both its scientific name and its common names. This stripe runs from behind the eye along the flank to the base of the caudal fin, sharply defined against a paler silvery or yellowish ground colour. The combination of this lateral band with the fish's relatively large size separates it from most sympatric Sri Lankan barbs at a glance. Sexual dimorphism has been reported in similar species but detailed data specific to this species are sparse in the accessible literature; females of large barbs are typically fuller-bodied when gravid.

Habitat

FishBase characterises Systomus pleurotaenia as a benthic-demersal species of freshwater tropical streams, preferring conditions that are deep, shaded and clear — attributes consistent with intact lowland rainforest watercourses rather than degraded, sun-exposed agricultural drains. It forms small shoals rather than large aggregations, suggesting modest group sizes in natural conditions.

The species is recorded from the Kelani and Nilwala Rivers, with Sudasinghe et al. (2023) specifying its lineages as concentrated in the Gin and Nilwala basins — rivers that drain the wet-zone hills of Sri Lanka's south-western quadrant, a region of high annual rainfall and historically dense tropical forest. Water parameters from FishBase sit in the range of 72–79 °F, pH 6.5–7.5 and hardness up to 15 dGH: warm, clear, soft to moderately hard water characteristic of the perhumid rainforest freshwater ecoregion these rivers traverse. This is not a peat-swamp blackwater species; the streams involved are clear-running, shaded, and fed by montane rainfall rather than lowland bog drainage.

Feeding

Specific dietary data for Systomus pleurotaenia in the wild are not well documented in the accessible literature. Based on the ecology of comparable medium-sized Asian barbs and its habitat association with clear, shaded forest streams, the species is presumed to be an omnivore, foraging opportunistically on small benthic invertebrates, algae, plant material and organic detritus from the stream bed and water column. The benthic-demersal characterisation from FishBase is consistent with a fish that spends time close to the bottom picking at food items.

In aquaria the species is reported to accept standard foods readily, in keeping with the dietary flexibility typical of Systomus and related genera. Live and frozen invertebrates alongside good-quality pellets or flakes suit its natural foraging profile. Its size means that food items must be correspondingly larger than those offered to small barbs, and its appetite can be substantial.

Mating

Like all barbs, Systomus pleurotaenia is an egg-scattering, non-guarding spawner. There is no nest construction, no pair bond maintained beyond the spawning act itself, and no form of parental care. Spawning in comparable medium-sized river barbs is typically seasonal and tied to rainfall cycles; a driving male pursues a gravid female through vegetation or over the substrate, and eggs and milt are released together as the pair press briefly against each other.

The eggs are adhesive and fall among roots, leaf litter, submerged vegetation or onto the bottom, after which the adults disperse without guarding the spawn. In wild Sri Lankan river barbs seasonal flooding and increased flow likely cue reproductive activity, synchronising spawning with conditions that offer improved food availability for emerging larvae.

Breeding

Detailed captive-breeding records for Systomus pleurotaenia are sparse in the literature reviewed, reflecting its status as a species of minor commercial and hobby interest compared with the heavily farmed small barbs of the trade. Its size — up to 6.5 in TL — means it requires a substantially larger spawning setup than the miniature barbs commonly bred by hobbyists, and gravid females carry a correspondingly large clutch of adhesive eggs.

By analogy with related Sri Lankan barbs and the general pattern in the genus, breeding would be induced by conditioning the fish on live and varied foods, providing soft to moderately hard, slightly acidic to neutral water at 75–79 °F, and simulating a seasonal cue such as a water change with slightly cooler, softer water. The scattered adhesive eggs should be separated from the adults immediately after spawning, as barbs give no parental care and will eat eggs and fry. Larvae are small and require fine-particulate foods — infusoria or commercial fry foods — after the yolk sac is absorbed.

In the aquarium

Systomus pleurotaenia has minor importance in the aquarium trade and is occasionally available through specialist importers focusing on Sri Lankan and South Asian species. Its size — reaching 6.5 in — places it in the category of a display barb rather than a community shoaler: it needs a spacious, well-filtered aquarium of at least 40–55 US gal, with shaded areas and good water quality reflecting the clear, shaded forest streams it inhabits in the wild.

Water conditions of 72–79 °F, pH 6.5–7.5 and soft to moderately hard water suit the species. Like most social barbs, it does best in a small group of at least four to six individuals. It is not a particularly difficult species to keep in suitable conditions, but its relatively large adult size, its preference for clear well-oxygenated water and its status as a wild-caught import (farmed stocks are not widely established) mean it is more demanding than the common small barbs. Ethical sourcing is a consideration given its Vulnerable status.

Conservation

Systomus pleurotaenia is assessed as Vulnerable (VU) on the IUCN Red List, with the IUCN taxon ID 18897. Its status was revised upward from Lower Risk/conservation dependent (LR/cd) to Vulnerable in the 2019-3 assessment cycle, reflecting ongoing decline. Endemic to Sri Lanka and confined to a small number of river catchments in the island's wet zone, it has a restricted range that makes it inherently sensitive to any reduction in habitat quality or area.

The principal threats are the severe contraction of Sri Lanka's lowland rainforest — the island has lost the great majority of its original forest cover since the colonial era — combined with river impoundment for hydropower and irrigation, water extraction, sedimentation from agriculture and plantation forestry, and pollution from agrochemicals. The Sudasinghe et al. (2023) biogeographic study identified the species' lineages as concentrated in the Gin and Nilwala basins, basins that lie squarely within the remaining wet-zone forest remnants and their agricultural margins. Collection for the aquarium trade adds additional but secondary pressure. The species' recovery depends on the protection of intact forest-stream habitat in the wet zone, an objective that aligns with broader biodiversity conservation priorities for Sri Lanka's globally significant freshwater fauna.
