Auchenipterus nuchalis is a slender, free-swimming driftwood catfish of the lower Amazon and Tocantins river systems, unusual among South American catfishes for its habit of roaming the open water column at dusk rather than hugging the bottom. Growing to 10.5 in standard length, it belongs to the family Auchenipteridae — the only catfish family to practice internal fertilisation, a reproductive rarity in which the male transfers sperm via a modified anal fin and the female stores it, spawning fertile eggs weeks later when flood conditions trigger her. A handsome, active fish for a spacious aquarium with appropriate tankmates, it rewards keepers willing to match its real adult size and nocturnal rhythms.

Taxonomy & naming

Auchenipterus nuchalis was described by the German naturalist Johann Baptist von Spix and the Swiss-American zoologist Louis Agassiz in 1829, from specimens collected during Spix's 1817–1820 Brazilian expedition — the original description appearing in the posthumous Selecta genera et species Piscium. The species was placed in the genus Auchenipterus, which takes its name from the Greek auchenos (neck or nape) and pteron (fin, or more broadly 'wing'), a reference to the pronounced dorsal fin origin near the nape. The epithet nuchalis is Latin for 'of the nape' (nucha), reinforcing the same anatomical landmark. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) treats Auchenipterus nuchalis as the valid combination; GBIF records confirm the authority as (Spix & Agassiz, 1829).

The family Auchenipteridae — the driftwood catfishes — is a moderately sized Neotropical family that includes genera such as Tatia, Centromochlus, Trachelyopterus and Ageneiosus. It is the only catfish family in which internal fertilisation has been confirmed across the group, making it biologically distinctive within Siluriformes. Some older literature may list this species under synonyms or place it in allied genera; Auchenipterus nuchalis is the current valid name.

Morphology

Auchenipterus nuchalis has an elongated, laterally compressed body that is more streamlined than typical benthic catfishes — a build suited to open-water cruising rather than bottom-hugging. Maximum reported size is 10.5 in standard length (FishBase). The head is moderately depressed, bearing three pairs of barbels: one long maxillary pair and two shorter mandibular pairs. The dorsal fin is tall and positioned well forward, close to the nape; the adipose fin is present; the tail is forked. Coloration is typically pale grey to silvery on the flanks, often with darker mottling or banding and pale to lightly pigmented fins.

Like all auchenipterids, the skin is entirely scaleless (naked), with no bony plates or scutes covering the body. This naked skin makes the species more permeable to medications and is a critical care consideration. The dorsal and pectoral fins are armed with stiff, serrated, locking spines — a characteristic of many catfishes. These spines can lock erect when the fish is alarmed and readily tangle in a net, and their serrations can puncture a keeper's hand; the fish should always be moved in a container rather than netted.

Habitat

The species is native to South America: the lower Amazon basin, the Tocantins River, and rivers of the Guiana Shield region extending northward to the Marowijne River (Suriname/French Guiana border); FishBase also notes the possibility of the Rupununi River (Guyana) and the Rio Negro (Brazil). It is a freshwater species throughout its range.

Unlike many Amazonian catfishes that are strict benthic dwellers, Auchenipterus nuchalis is noted for activity near the surface and in the open water column, particularly at dusk and dawn, where it forages actively. The rivers it inhabits are warm lowland systems with soft to moderately hard water. FishBase records pH 6.7–7.2 and hardness 7–16 dH, with temperatures of 68–72 °F — conditions typical of the seasonally flooded rivers and flooded forests of the lower Amazon basin. Flood pulse timing appears to trigger the reproductive cycle, with spawning correlating with the onset of the rainy season.

Feeding

Auchenipterus nuchalis is a nocturnal omnivore and micro-predator. In the wild it forages primarily at dusk and after dark, taking smaller fish and benthic invertebrates — insect larvae, small crustaceans and other aquatic invertebrates — as well as detrital material. Its free-swimming, more pelagic habits mean it is an active pursuer of prey rather than a passive scavenger, and smaller fish are genuinely at risk.

In the aquarium it will accept sinking and slowly-sinking pellets, frozen foods such as bloodworm, white mosquito larvae and brine shrimp, and most prepared catfish foods. Because it is most active after dark, feeding after lights-out ensures it is not out-competed by diurnal tankmates. The capacity to take small fish should inform tankmate selection: companions need to be large enough not to be viewed as prey.

Mating

Auchenipterus nuchalis belongs to the family Auchenipteridae, the only catfish family in which internal fertilisation has been confirmed. The male's anal fin is modified into an intromittent organ — a structural adaptation that allows direct transfer of sperm into the female during mating. A distinctive feature of this system is that the sperm are packaged into discrete bundles called spermatozeugmata, bound together by mucus secreted from seminal vesicles; these bundles are transferred to the female during copulation.

The female stores the received sperm internally and does not spawn immediately after mating. Instead, she retains viable sperm until environmental cues — particularly the onset of the annual flood pulse in Amazonian river systems — trigger egg release and fertilisation. This means that a female can be separated from males well before spawning yet still produce fertile eggs. The strategy is rare among catfishes and among teleost fishes generally, and it is worth noting explicitly for anyone attempting captive breeding. Mating in the aquarium has been recorded, but it is not a commonly achieved event under standard hobby conditions.

Breeding

As noted above, Auchenipterus nuchalis practices internal fertilisation with delayed spawning: a female that has mated will store sperm and eventually deposit fertile eggs when conditions are suitable, without requiring the male to be present at laying. In the wild, spawning is timed to the flood season, when rising water temperatures, changing photoperiod and shifts in water chemistry signal the onset of the rainy season.

Breeding in the home aquarium is rarely achieved and not straightforward. Triggering spawning typically requires simulating seasonal cues — a gradual temperature rise, water changes with slightly softer or cooler water to mimic the onset of the wet season, and extended dim-lighting periods. There is no parental care after egg deposition; eggs and fry receive no guarding from either parent. Fry are small and require appropriately sized live or frozen foods from first feeding. Most aquarium specimens of this species are wild-caught, reflecting how infrequently captive breeding succeeds.

In the aquarium

An adult Auchenipterus nuchalis at 10.5 in requires a spacious aquarium — a tank of at least 47–59 in in length is appropriate for a single adult, larger for a group. Provide open swimming space in the mid-to-upper water column (this species is less benthic than many catfishes) as well as driftwood, roots and low-level caves for daytime retreats. The water should be warm (68–72 °F), soft to moderately hard (dH 7–16), and near neutral in pH (6.7–7.2), reflecting its Amazonian lowland origin.

Two care points follow directly from its biology. First, the skin is entirely scaleless, making this catfish significantly more sensitive than scaled fish to copper-based medications, many antiparasitic treatments and some antibiotics — always dose at the conservative end of the recommended range (half-dose is often advised), and use copper treatments with particular caution. Second, the pectoral and dorsal spines are stiff, serrated and lock erect when the fish is stressed — they tangle instantly in a net and can badly puncture a keeper's hand. Always move this fish in a container, never a net.

Auchenipterus nuchalis is not a community fish for small tankmates: it is an active predator of fish small enough to swallow, and companions must be large and robust. It is nocturnal, so tankmates that feed by day will not compete with it for food. Keep only with fish of comparable or larger size — large barbs, larger characins, or other South American catfishes of similar scale. The species appears not to be aggressive toward fish it cannot eat.

Conservation

The IUCN Red List (2022) assesses Auchenipterus nuchalis as Least Concern, citing a broad distribution across the lower Amazon, Tocantins and adjacent drainages and no evidence of a decline sufficient to trigger a higher threat category. The species is encountered with reasonable frequency across its range and is traded in the aquarium hobby, typically as wild-collected specimens given the rarity of captive breeding.

Pressures common to Amazonian lowland fishes — deforestation and sedimentation in the watershed, dam construction on the Tocantins and Amazon tributaries, and the broader effects of climate-driven shifts in flood-pulse timing — are relevant background threats, though none are currently assessed as driving population decline. The reliance on seasonal flood cues for reproduction makes this species potentially sensitive to hydrological disruption, a concern for the long term as dam infrastructure in the Tocantins basin continues to alter flood regimes.
