Taxonomy & naming
Ancistrus caucanus was described by Henry Weed Fowler in 1943 on the basis of a single holotype specimen from the Cauca River drainage in Colombia. The specific epithet refers directly to this river: caucanus is a Latinised form of 'Cauca', placing the type locality unambiguously in northwestern Colombia. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) recognises Ancistrus caucanus as a valid species in its own right — not a combination transferred from another genus — so the authority is written without parentheses.
Within Loricariidae the species is placed in subfamily Hypostominae, tribe Ancistrini, alongside the several hundred other members of the genus Ancistrus. The teeth were noted and figured by Muller and Weber (1992) in their broader treatment of loricariid dentition, one of the few substantive post-description accounts to mention the taxon. Beyond that, the primary ichthyological literature is essentially silent, a direct consequence of the species being known from one specimen.
The genus Ancistrus itself — the bristlenoses — is one of the most species-rich genera in Loricariidae and indeed among all catfishes, with well over 70 valid species recognised. Members are united by the presence of branched, fleshy tentacles (odontodes) on the snout and head, which give the group its common name and its characteristic look. A. caucanus is presumed to share this general bauplan, but the degree of tentacle development cannot be confirmed from data currently on record.
Morphology
Ancistrus caucanus reaches a maximum recorded length of 2 in standard length (SL) — a figure derived from the single holotype and representing the only size datum available for the species. Whether this individual was a juvenile, a mature small adult, or an unusually small specimen of a larger-growing species cannot be determined from the existing record. For context, many Ancistrus species attain 4–6 in SL, so 2 in may represent an immature fish.
As with all Ancistrus, the body is fully covered in the bony scute armour characteristic of loricariid catfishes: overlapping plates arranged in rows along the flanks, forming a rigid external skeleton that provides mechanical protection. The ventral surface is unplated or lightly plated, soft and flexible, allowing the sucker-mouth to seal against substrates. The mouth is ventrally positioned, adapted for rasping biofilm and algae from rock and wood surfaces.
The genus-defining feature — branched snout tentacles — is present in Ancistrus males as fleshy, often highly branched protuberances extending from the rostral region and the leading edge of the snout. In females these are typically short and restricted to the snout margin, or entirely absent. This tentacle array is diagnostic for the genus and serves a role in male-male assessment during competition for spawning sites. Whether A. caucanus shows any distinctive tentacle morphology relative to close congeners is not documented in the available material.
Beyond these genus-level traits, coloration, fin ray counts, and scute patterning for A. caucanus are not recorded in accessible literature, and no image exists on FishBase or in publicly available collections. Data sparse.
Habitat
The holotype of Ancistrus caucanus was collected from the Cauca River basin in Colombia — the only confirmed provenance for this species. The Cauca River is the second-largest river in Colombia, draining a high-altitude inter-Andean valley (the Cauca Valley) before descending through the Western Cordillera and eventually joining the Magdalena River in the lowlands. The basin spans a considerable elevational gradient, from the high Andes down to tropical lowland floodplains.
Ancistrus species in Andean river systems typically occupy rocky substrates with moderate to strong current, particularly in smaller tributaries and streams where gravel and cobble bottoms are common. In such environments they feed on the periphyton (algae, diatoms, and biofilm) that coats rock surfaces, and seek refuge in crevices and under stones. Air-breathing capacity — noted for this species on FishBase as facultative or obligate — suggests it may also inhabit oxygen-challenged environments, such as seasonally reduced pools or streams with high organic loads, a trait found across the genus.
Beyond the river basin attribution, no specific water-parameter data (temperature, pH, conductivity) are on record for the type locality or for the species in general. The Cauca basin at lower to mid elevations typically supports warm, neutral to slightly alkaline waters, but this cannot be confirmed as specific to the collection site. Data sparse.
Feeding
No species-specific feeding data exist for Ancistrus caucanus. General loricariid and Ancistrus biology informs reasonable expectations: the ventrally placed sucker-mouth, flat teeth suited for scraping, and the overall body plan of the genus point to a diet based on periphyton — the biofilm of algae, diatoms, bacteria, and fine detritus that coats submerged hard surfaces in rivers.
Across the genus, Ancistrus species are predominantly algae-grazers and biofilm scrapers, supplemented in the wild by plant matter, invertebrate larvae, and organic detritus drifting through their benthic zone. Some species also rasp at submerged wood, particularly softer decomposing wood, though the degree of wood consumption varies among congeners and A. caucanus's dietary habits in this regard are unrecorded.
Facultative air-breathing capability noted for this species on FishBase aligns with the broader Ancistrus pattern: many members of the genus can take atmospheric air at the surface, which allows persistence in warm, oxygen-poor waters where purely aquatic respiration would be insufficient.
Mating
No mating behaviour has been observed or reported for Ancistrus caucanus. Given the species is known from a single museum specimen, no live animals have been maintained or bred under documented conditions.
Within Ancistrus more broadly, courtship follows a cave-based system. Males establish and defend sheltered cavities — natural rock crevices, hollow logs, or spaces beneath large boulders — and display their branched snout tentacles during male-to-male competition. These tentacles are thought to signal male quality and may also serve a sensory role in low-light cave environments. Females assess males and choose suitable spawning cavities; the male's role shifts from competitor to guardian once eggs are laid. Whether A. caucanus follows this pattern identically is assumed but not confirmed.
Breeding
No breeding data exist for Ancistrus caucanus. The species has not been maintained in captivity under documented conditions, and no aquarium records, PlanetCatfish reports, or breeding accounts appear in accessible literature.
The general Ancistrus breeding pattern — cave spawning, adhesive clutches deposited on cavity walls, and paternal guarding with active fin-fanning — is well established across many congeners. Fry characteristically emerge as miniature adults and begin feeding on biofilm almost immediately. Whether A. caucanus breeds in this manner is inferred from genus membership only. Given the species is known from a single holotype, basic biology including reproductive strategy remains undocumented. Data sparse.
In the aquarium
Ancistrus caucanus has not been recorded in the aquarium trade or in hobbyist collections. The species is known exclusively from one holotype specimen deposited in a natural history collection, and no live animals have ever been identified and maintained under documented aquarium conditions.
Shouldindividuals of this species ever become available — an unlikely prospect given the near-absence of wild collection records — care would reasonably follow general Ancistrus husbandry: a tank of at least 20 US gal with strong filtration, smooth river cobbles or slate slabs for grazing, one or two crevice hiding spots sized appropriately for the small adult, and clean, well-oxygenated water in the tropical range. A diet of algae wafers, blanched vegetables (courgette, cucumber, spinach), and occasional high-protein treats would suit the biofilm-grazing ecology of the genus.
At 2 in SL recorded from the holotype, any aquarium for this species could be modest in scale by pleco standards. However, without confirmed adult size data, this figure should be treated with caution. Conservation
Ancistrus caucanus is assessed as Least Concern on the IUCN Red List (assessed October 2014). This designation may reflect the assumption that the Cauca River basin, despite being subject to significant agricultural and urban pressures, supports a stable population — or it may simply reflect the absence of sufficient data to assign a more precautionary category.
The Cauca River basin is one of the most heavily impacted major river systems in Colombia. Decades of deforestation, intensive sugar-cane and coffee agriculture in the Cauca Valley, urban effluent from Cali and other cities, and water abstraction for irrigation have substantially altered water quality and riparian habitat throughout the basin. Sedimentation from eroded hillsides has smothered many rocky benthic habitats of the kind that loricariid catfishes depend on.
Given that the species is known only from a single holotype — and has not been collected again in more than 80 years since Fowler's description — the true conservation status of this taxon is difficult to evaluate. It may be genuinely rare, restricted to a narrow habitat type, or simply overlooked. More field survey effort in the Colombian Cauca system would be needed to characterise population status with any confidence.
